The product, in the report: fireplace heater

About two years ago I purchased a Bonaire Electric Fireplace heater Model BFH5000. I used it intermittently but about two weeks ago I heard a repetitive clicking noise after it was powered down. I unplugged it to reset and then tried powering it up again. Everything seems to work fine so I powered it down again and after a short delay of about 20 seconds the clicking sound returned. I unplugged it and contacted Bonaire, who informed me it was not under warranty. Despite this, I asked the representative to find out if they had other complaints similar to mine. She talked with her supervisor and informed me they had no reports of any problem like this. She did suggest I discontinue using the product for safety reasons. Today, I opened the product to expose the element, circuit board and fan, plugged it in an turned it on. Everything seemed to work fine and after about one minute I turned it off and it did the typical 10 second power down and then turned off. Everything turned off including the fan but the heating element did not turn off and started glowing red hot! I quickly unplugged it and the element of course shut down.

I find it very disturbing and dangerous that the heating element continued to stay powered up even after the unit is powered down and the risk of fire is obvious. I will contact Bonaire and report the problem but I thought the CPSC should be aware of the problem since the is a wall mount electric heater which makes the risk of fire even more dangerous.

Well, almost had the fire department here Christmas Day. Bought this heater from BUY.COM around 12/5, received around 12/15. Used two times - no problem. 3rd time, 12/25 11 am: Son turns ON the fireplace heater and almost immediately, heavy, smelly smoke and small flame appears/pours-out below the faux flaming fireplace display. Unplugged, grabbed the unit, and threw out the door! Heater malfunctioned - sending out smoke and flame. Apparently, I am NOT the only user with a problem on this product. See product reviews on BUY.COM web site. If you wish a picture, I can/will supply. A BIG SAFETY PROBLEM. If we had left the heater unattended for just a moment, we would have had a major catastrophe.
