  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 21, 2026, sent to the company Jul 23, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 6, 2026

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 3-in-1 Smart Portable Room Air Conditioner with Wi-Fi 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) / 10,000 BTU (DOE), Cools Up to 700 Sq. Ft., Quiet Operation, White

Product: Frigidaire Portable Air Conditioner Issue: Melted electrical prong / discontinued critical safety part Retailer: Amazon Manufacturer: Frigidaire

I purchased a Frigidaire portable air conditioner from Amazon. The unit operates on standard 115volt household power, which is one of the reasons I selected this model. I always choose 115volt portable air conditioners because they run on normal household outlets and avoid the highervoltage systems that require special wiring. This unit was used exactly as intended plugged directly into a standard wall outlet, with no extension cords, adapters, or unusual load.

Despite this, the power cords prong melted at the outlet connection during normal use, creating a clear electrical and fire hazard. The failure occurred under ordinary consumer conditions.

After the incident, I attempted to obtain a replacement power cord from Frigidaire. The manufacturer states that the cord is no longer manufactured and instructs consumers not to contact them about this part. This means the product cannot be repaired or safely used, and the defective electrical component cannot be replaced.

Amazon continues to sell the same model (or materially identical units) to consumers, even though the product contains a critical electrical part that has been discontinued and cannot be replaced if it fails.

The melted prong indicates a potential electrical defect that could lead to fire, shock, or property damage. The manufacturers refusal to support or replace a critical safety component, combined with ongoing retail sales of the unit, raises concerns about consumer safety and product compliance.

I am submitting this report so the Consumer Product Safety Commission can review the products safety, the electrical failure, and the manufacturers discontinuation of the essential part needed to safely operate the unit.

The product, in the report: Air conditioner

The consumer says that her air conditioning is not on the recalled list (CPSC # 25-320), but it has the same problems. Since she bought it, in May 2020, the air conditioner has had a funny smell and started to grow mold.

The consumer contacted the company on three different occasions. The first time, they told her that they would send her a filter. Another time, they told her that they would replace the unit, and finally they said they couldn’t replace it, so they would send a technician.

When the technician went to check the air conditioner, he said he couldn’t do anything since the AC was working. He didn’t fix the problem or provide any solution to the mold growing on the device.

The consumer is upset because she says that her son has asthma and her husband has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), after years of using the AC. Also, it is too hot outside during the spring and summer season for them not to use the device that they paid for.

The consumer states that it smells musty, and you can sense the smell all over her property, and she complains that her model number is not on the recalled list. She wants the company to put it on the list or give them compensation or something so they can get another air conditioner.

to Start I bought this unit about 2 years ago at Lowe’s and brought it home and installed it everything worked fine until I walked into the house today on 3/21/2020. I walked inside of the house and looking around I had the smell of burning wiring in my house I looked around trying to find where it was coming from. I turned off the A/C unit and and it normally takes a mins to shut off. I waited and it was not turning off and the smell was getting stronger. I unplugged the A/C unit and took took off the front cover of the A/C unit and found that there was smoke coming off the top of the unit. I unscrewed the top panel of the A/C unit and found that the controller board on the top of the unit is blacken and chard and still smoking I unplugged the unit and called Frigidaire and explained what happened with the unit that they have they told me that only the HVAC system is only covered and that non of the electrical side of the A/C unit was not covered. I explained that there was something wrong with the unit and they kept stating that it is not under warrenty and what could had started a fire inside of my house and or caused major damage to the house hold putting life at risk of being in harms way. There is a Braker switch at the plug that did not turn off while there is a problem the unit.

The product, in the report: Electrolux Home Products Frigidaire Room Air Conditioner; Model FRA064AT7; Serial Number KK25142655

I am reporting a problem with an Electrolux Home Products Frigidaire Room Air Conditioner. The Model is FRA064AT7 and the Serial Number is KK25142655.

My husband and I usually use the remote to turn on the air conditioner. However, one day this summer, my husband turned on the air conditioner by hand (instead of using the remote). He smelled a strong musty odor. He looked closely at the air conditioner and saw there was black mold on the vents (located on the front above the air filter), so he removed them and clean them. He also could see inside the air conditioner and saw the fan and other parts inside the body of the air conditioner had black mold, including the white Styrofoam inner shell. We do not know how long this black mold had been growing in the air conditioner.

My husband and I both experienced numerous mold-related health issues due to the mold inside the air conditioner. We didn’t realize the health issues we were having were due to mold until we discovered the mold on the vents and in the air conditioner. After cleaning the mold off the vents (and regularly checking and cleaning them since then), the health issues have decreased. The mold still remained inside the body of the air conditioner.

The air conditioner’s manual has Care and Cleaning instructions regarding the air filter and exterior cabinet only. It does not indicate that the vents (located on the front above the air filter) and the interior body of the air conditioner need to be cleaned. It is easy to remove the vents and clean them. However, it is quite a process to access the interior body of the air conditioner.

Suggestions: The manual should at least be updated to include the vents as a part that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Perhaps the interior components could be made of mold-resistant materials.

The mold that grew in this air conditioner is definitely a health issue for people. My husband and I do not own a pet, but I wonder if the mold could also cause health issues for pets.

Now that it is autumn and the temperatures are cooler, we have removed the air conditioner for the season. My husband took the air conditioner apart, and I took pictures.

I will attach photos of the inside of the air conditioner, pictures of the model/serial number tag on the outside of the air conditioner, and the Care and Cleaning instructions that are in the air conditioner manual. I have also attached a photo of the front of the air conditioner showing the vents that I refer to above. The vent photo shows them after they were cleaned and the air conditioner is ready for winter storage.

For the Incident Date below, I will use an estimated date of when my husband turned on the air conditioner by hand and smelled the strong musty odor.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 10,000 BTU 115amp window unit air conditioner

We have a window air conditioning unit that was purchased last year in 2013; this is the second summer it has been used. We cleaned the filter and winterized the unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A few weeks ago, I noticed had a mildew-y smell upon turning it on. With closer inspection (peering through the vents with a flash light), I noticed that the interior of the unit is coated in spots of mold. My husband, son and I spent the entire summer trading illnesses (fever and respiratory illness) which seems to have miraculously cleared up upon discovery and discontinuing use of the unit (I obviously cannot prove that this is more than a coincidence, just thought I’d include that piece of information!). I contacted Frigidaire for assistance and their response included only instructions for cleaning the exterior of the unit. I have pasted it below in its entirety.

............................................................................ Thank you for contacting Frigidaire [REDACTED] . Please accept my personal apologies for any inconvenience that the A/C has caused you and your husband.
