The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Amana PTAC residential unit, model: PTC153B50AK and serial: 0511138681

I was preparing my PTAC unit for the warm weather and noticed that my breaker was tripped, after turning it back on, it tripped back immediately and there was a burning smell coming from the AC unit. The AC power cord has a breaker which did not trip. I opened the AC unit to assess the damage and noticed that nothing was burnt and the smell was coming from the power cord itself. I disconnected the power cord from the AC unit and tested again by plugging to the wall, it turns out the power cord is short circuiting and the breaker inside it is not working so it keeps on tripping the main breaker of my condo.

There is an ongoing recall for this model but my serial number is not included.

I called the number mentioned there and they told me there is no recall on my unit, I called the manufacturer and after being transferred a couple of times, landed on an answering machine.

The product, in the report: Amana wall unit heat/air

I was at home and the breaker kicked off, I started smelling smoke, found the source, it was the plug that had melted into the plugin. I called the heat/air folks and they came out to replace it cost me almost $200.00 for emergency call, trip fee, and repair.

The product, in the report: Amana PTAC units. Model #PTC093B50AJ

We are a long term care facility that has 75 Amana PTAC units. I have had two of the power cords overheat and burn. I have also had to replace approximately half of the control boards due to a circuit burning up bad enough to leave smoke stains on the boards. Most of them are model # PTC093B50AJ, There was already a recall issued for this product but it didn’t cover the ones in our facility because our serial #s fell before the #s issued in the recall. I feel that it should be expanded due to the fire potential with these units. We have a lot of lives at stake in our building.
