The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 8, 2024, sent to the company Feb 12, 2024, published by CPSC Feb 27, 2024

The product, in the report: Vornado table fan, black, 8.25” x 12” x 13.6”. Tilt head, 3 speed. Patent [REDACTED]. 120V .5A 60Hz

I had been smelling a faint burning smell for a few days but couldn’t tell where it was coming from, then the smell suddenly got worse and could tell it was coming from my Vornado fan. I picked up the fan and suddenly there was a spark / flash and smoke and my breaker tripped. Looking closely at the fan I could see the power cord was brittle and falling apart at the base of the fan where it enters through the grommet. I contacted Vornado about the incident and included the pictures I took, and I have received multiple form letters back from their customer service with generic form emails asking for information I’ve already provided, twice. The conversations in email make it clear that no one from Vornado has actually read what I wrote, there is no acknowledgement from them that they’re aware this incident occurred, it’s clearly generic auto-responses that I keep receiving only acknowledging that “we are behind in responding to emails”.

In summary: My Vornado fan’s power cord started smouldering and then shorted out while I was holding it to examine where the burning smell was coming from, and not due to abuse or damage created by me. The insulation on the cord became brittle, started breaking apart, and caused a short. I was using the product myself, the fan was on my floor. I almost got electrocuted by picking the unit up and holding it. I have detailed pictures showing the damage on the cord, and the model and serial# of the fan. I have no children or pets, this fan has been sitting undisturbed for years and was used every night.

The product, in the report: Vornado EXO51 fan with three speeds a green color with metal base. Model EXO51 UPC CR1-0389-17

Purchased the Vornado EXO51 fan after receiving open the top of the box pulling the fan from the box itself and noticed a sharp pain in my hand after further inspection I had several small cuts on my fingers was wondering why that happened from just pulling the fan out of the box normally you would pull or pick up something from where the handle would be but there are no handles on this unit there is a gap between the top and back that your hand would fit to normally to pick this unit up that is where my hand was placed, went ahead and assembled the base unit to the fan went to pick up the fan again in the most convenient spot which is the same place and felt sharp pain in my fingers again after looking at the placement of where my hand was there are several sharp jagged edges along with seam line on both sides of where your hand would fit in to normally pick the unit up my concerns is the unit is unsafe to handle.
