The product, in the report: 18” digital oscillating fan with remote control
I purchased this fan exactly one month ago. Today, I woke at 3am woke up and noticed a strong burning/molten plastic smell. The fan was plugged in and switched on, but the blades were no longer running. I immediately unplugged the fan and began to move it outside due to the odor. The motor area was extremely hot. It was so hot that the plastic casing had begun to melt.
I believe this was a dangerous product failure. The fan appeared to remain energized even though the blades were not spinning, causing the motor area to overheat severely. If I had not woken up when I did, it would have continued to overheat and could have resulted in a house fire, injury, or worse. No fire occurred because I discovered the issue and unplugged the fan in time. However, the severity of the heat, the burning plastic smell, and the visible melting of the motor casing suggest a dangerous electrical or motor failure.

The product, in the report: Box Fan
I purchased this box fan from Amazon for my daughter. It was plugged in and turned on. She plugged the vacuum into the outlet to vacuum her room and before she ever turned the vacuum on... flames shot out of the wall and caught her drapes on fire. The fire department came. There was black smoke and the wall was warm. They turned our electricity off until we had an electrician come turn it back on. The fan WAS the cause of this according to the electrician. We had to stay away from home for two nights. I have to repair the wall because the firemen wanted to make sure it didn’t spread.

The product, in the report: Holmes floor fan. Approx 16 blade diameter 3 speed. Plain white with 3 gray blades bought in 2015
I woke up this morning to the smell of burning plastic and severe chest pain, with the Southern California heat we leave the fans on over night (7-9 hours) and I guess this piece of [REDACTED] fan is melting somewhere and polluting the indoor air my kids breathe! I’ve had a nagging suspicion I smelled burning plastic for some time now but overnight it became obvious. I have two babies under the age of 3 that have been exposed to this [REDACTED]!! This is probably the first time I’ve reviewed a product I’m so mad! Don’t go cheap with your fan as we did and bought this plain Holmes fan ... It’s not worth trading your health!

The product, in the report: 31” Oscillating Tower Fan
I recently purchased a Holmes 31” Tower fan from Target. After assembling the fan per the instructions, I noticed it was very unstable on its base. For lack of a better term, it wobbled badly. I tested the fan at all of its speeds and the wobble seemed to get worse. When I had the fan on its highest speed and activated the oscillation feature the fan tipped over when the fan pointed towards the near wall. I believe it was the air bouncing of the wall back at the fan that tipped it over. Of course, if it had a sturdy safe base and didn’t wobble precariously this wouldn’t have happened. I contacted the manufacturer of the fan and they are doing everything they can to discourage my reporting this issue.

The product, in the report: Side by side window fan.
We were given 3, Holmes window fans last summer that were purchased from Walmart in Butler Pa. 2 of our 3 window fans have gone bad and nearly caused a fires. The first (which was in my toddlers bedroom) stopped running and began to produce a burning electrical smell which woke my son who then alerted us, this was apriximataly 2 weeks ago (July 2015). Today (2 weeks later, August 4, 2015) the second of the 3 fans began to produce a electrical fire smell that filled out entire residence. This unit was still running. Both units, the plastic foam insulation around the motors was discolored on and appeared to be starting to melt and were isolated to be the the source of the smell. The plastic fan slats at the motors were extremely hot to the touch, actually too hot to touch for more than a second or two. With both incidents the walls around the electrical outlet became hot over where the wires run through the walls however we caught the problem prior to the breakers tripping. I attempted to contacted the manufacturer today and am awaiting contact back from the company. After reviewing product reviews on the manufacturers site and various other sites searching for possible recalls I found an identical incident on a review on Target.com website from a person who also purchased 3 and had 2 fail similarly to ours shortly after purchase.

The product, in the report: Holmes green plastic round table top fan
My 12 year old daughter woke to her Holmes fan in flames at 4am and quickly threw a blanket over it to stop the fire, she suffered second degree burns to her right hand where the plastic had melted to her. We all woke to the smoke detectors going off and found out what happened. We took her to the ER. The fan was properly plugged in and there was nothing near it, it was used nightly for white noise. Turned on around 9 pm. The outlets were unharmed, cord was unharmed, the fan was melted flat.

The product, in the report: Fan
Fan caught on fire after stopping by itself and being re-turned on and being re-plugged in. Apparently the fan’s inside metal piece allowing side to side movement had broken due to fatigue and then cut internal electrics.
As I remember, the fan was by Holmes.

The product, in the report: Oscillating table fan, AC power
My Holmes Oscillating Fan Model HAOF87 “Blizzard” has been working fine since we bought it new several years ago. However recently I accidentally stepped on the cord barefoot and got a 60-cycle shock in my foot. (I’m a retired Electrical Engineer and I _know_ what 60 hertz current feels like.)
A visual inspection of the chord shows no wear or breaks in the insulation (but my eyesight ain’t what it used to be). It was plugged in with the polarized plug in the correct direction and the outlet is properly grounded.
I would be happy to mail you the fan if you wish.
