Hurt, care not known Made Feb 4, 2022, sent to the company Apr 1, 2022, published by CPSC Apr 15, 2022
The product, in the report: Broan E64000 Series range hood
22 February 2021 Consumer Product Safety Commission 4330 East West Highway Bethesda, MD 20814
Dear Sirs: As part of a recent kitchen renovation I purchased a Broan E64000 Series range hood. I thought Broan sold high quality and well designed products. I was wrong. While probably not of interest to the CPSC, there are some design flaws that, while not dangerous, are very annoying.
First, the knobs controlling the light intensity and fan speed simply fall off . They appear to be secured with an impossibly small and virtually inaccessible set screw. So, they just fall off.
Second the bulbs in the under-hood lights fit so snugly in their recess they are extremely difficult to remove and even harder to install. Major annoyance,
But the real and dangerous design flaw relates to the under hood lights. These are not LEDs, they are incandescent bulbs and get extremely hot The problem is the switch to tum them on and off, and the knob to adjust their intensity are not in view, but are hidden on the under side of the hood. When groping to find the switch it is all too easy to easy to contact one of the bulbs and seriously burn your fingers. This is not hypothetical. Both my housemate and I have burned our fingers while attempting to turn the lights off.
I believe Broan should be required to recall these hoods and replace them, at their expense, with a redesigned model that does not present a danger to the public.

The product, in the report: Broan 688 ventilation fan
I spoke with the electrician construction workers on site that witnessed the fire. They said that they had wired the fan and other fixtures and introduced power and were testing them. They turned on the bathroom fan and walked away to check other fixtures. After 5 minutes, they noticed smoke around the fan. They pulled some of the sheet rock ceiling in the bathroom ans saw smoke and flame burning on the trusses. Using a 1 gallon drinking water container and other other water bottles they extinguished the fire and prevented further growth and fire spread.

Hurt, care not known Made Mar 16, 2015, sent to the company Mar 31, 2015, published by CPSC Apr 14, 2015
The product, in the report: Fan
The owner bought the house in March 2012 as repossession; the house was built 2002; when he bought, he had to totally remodel everything, i.e. the house had been destroyed inside; The closet in the laundry room was an area used for a salt water aquarium, most likely built-in when the house was originally built; The wall where the aquarium would have sat was open like there had been a window. There was no aquarium in this space when he bought the home, just an opening in the wall; He replaced the drywall where the opening had been, did not have to do any electrical or plumbing work to finish the wall;
The fire occurred in the middle of the night, when he woke up to his dogs barking like crazy; He said he couldn’t turn any lights on in the kitchen and saw an orange glow under the door into laundry room; He said when he first opened the door the exhaust fan was burning and fire was dripping on the floor along with plastic & aluminum metal. He said with-in seconds the plastic cover fell & he was burned on the leg from the splashing molten plastic; He said he threw water on it from floor level but it didn’t do much; He said he got the ladder & using a bowl of water got up to closer & he was able to control the fire with several bowls of water; He said he got it out and never felt the need to call the FD.

The product, in the report: Broan Fan-Light Range Hood Combination
Broan Fan/Light Range Hood combination S/N 02091000870 Man Date Code 90B2ST 9907214578 Range Hood Model [QL1 Rev B]. Lights have plastic (2) light bulb covers/diffusers. Evidently after about 18 months use, the plastic deforms enough that the locking tabs no longer make contact with the metal slots on hood body. At that point the light covers will fall onto the cook top. Note: This occurs quite unexpectedly and unless one is standing right at the stove would in all probability cause a fire (gas cooktop).
