The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Oct 8, 2020, sent to the company Nov 5, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 20, 2020

The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton gas cap -- sold at Home Depot as Briggs & Stratton Gas Cap for Eli OHV engines; online (powertoolreplacementparts.com) as Briggs & Stratton part 84004416 (selected by model number) (but marked on part itself as 80076945) Model 104M02-0223-F1 (engine assembly)

My Craftsman lawnmower has a Briggs & Stratton (B&S) model 104M02-0223-F1 engine. While in use the cap came off with its lanyard and was mown over. A B&S replacement (Briggs & Stratton Gas Cap for EXi OHV Engines) purchased at [REDACTED] fit so poorly that engine vibration alone was enough to unscrew it. I then purchased a B&S replacement from a website that allowed me to retrieve the correct part number (84004416) for my engine model. The cap came in a sealed B&S bag with that number. But it was the same poorly-fitting cap, and was marked on the cap itself as part 80076945. This is a safety issue because even if taped in place, the cap drips fuel while the mower is in use, and releases fumes into the garage otherwise.
