No one hurt Made Nov 29, 2018, sent to the company Feb 21, 2019, published by CPSC Mar 7, 2019
The product, in the report: York HVAC unit
On November 21, 2018 I discovered my York gas pack unit was not working The heat would not come on. I called J.F. Whitlow Jr. & Sons, Inc, my heating & air conditioning contractor for an appointment for service. The York HVAC unit was still under warranty. On November 23, 2018 the service technician & I found the [REDACTED] surge protector that J.F. Whitlow installed on January 2, 2013 had appeared to have exploded/melted/caught fire and melted/burned some vinyl siding on my home and caused black scorch marks and soot on the vinyl siding next to & above the surge protector on my home. The [REDACTED] surge protector was wired to the breaker panel (disconnect) to the HVAC unit and also caused a variety of fuses to short out. After researching this Model surge protector, the [REDACTED], I found many similar incidents regarding them catching on fire and causing property damage to other persons homes. It should be noted that on July 29, 2016, Underwriter Laboratories (“UL”) REMOVED its industry certification, finding that “the surge protectors may pose a fire hazard.” I made J.F. Whitlow Jr. & Sons, Inc. aware of the problems I found with this model surge protector in hopes that if they installed any others on HVAC units in previous years, they would warn their customers of the potential dangers they pose. A surge protector is designed for PROTECTION, SAFETY and to prevent DAMAGE to a piece of expensive equipment as well as SAVE lives. It is not meant to act as an explosive device. In my opinion, the [REDACTED] should be recalled immediately and is a very DANGEROUS piece of equipment.
