The product, in the report: Furnace
Purchased and HVAC system from Topline in Lancaster PA back in June 2024. System was s tuned up in October 2024. This Thursday the Goodman system that was installed back in June 2024 started spraying water onto my wooden attic that leaked through the ceiling. Topline was not able to come out Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to look at the system. I hired ESC who turned off the HVAC system this Friday.Topline Heating & Air 1103 Ranck Mill Rd Lancaster, PA 17602 Office: (717) 921-5027 www.ToplineAir.com Invoice [REDACTED] Invoice Date 6/12/2024 Completed Date 6/12/2024 Customer PO Payment Term Due Upon Receipt Due Date 6/12/2024.
ESC Tech reportI found the system totally frozen up. I thawed the coil and used the electronic leak detector to check for leaks. I found that when it was installed, spray foam was used to seal the ductwork. A large amount was sprayed onto the evaporator coil left hand rear of the case. The detector continued to go off around this area and there is staining on the coil from the refrigerant oil. The system is 1 year old. Since this is not a manufacturer defect that would be covered under part warranty and should be covered under some sort of workmanship warranty I suggested calling the company that installed it.

The product, in the report: Goodman AWUF Model, Model No. AWUF240816BA, Serial No. 1407362952, silver
I have a Goodman HVAC air handler in my rented apartment building - the entire complex has them. It is not subject to any recalls that I have found but mine caught fire within the circuit board. I looked on reports on CPSC and noticed multiple other reports of the same issue with this equipment. I am aware this has happened in several other units and the fire suppression box is what has caught it every time. My HVAC fire did not trip my breaker. The issues of surging power to a circuit board that catches fire is a repeatedly reported (not just here but online as well) incident. These units are mostly in shared spaces such as apartments and pose a risk to life.

The product, in the report: Heat pump
Caller is reporting that the heat pump broke down, technicians came out, but the problem has not been resolved. The fan motors failed and the unit is unable to cool the home during the hot weather. The fan motor would not operate because: 1- Both indoor and outdoor units had been wired wrongly. 2- They failed to insert a cylinder & its O-rings back into the indoor unit, there the equipment would not time & would leak all Freon from lines. 3 - After wrongfully rewiring the outdoor unit created a (?) in the (?) valve, furthering the damage to my unit being only 1 yr 8 mos. 4 - This whole process took c. 1 month to correct. Caller stated that with the unit not cooling the home is putting his family’s health in jeopardy.
Caller feels that the heat pump is unsafe and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps (PTACs)
The submitter contacted the firm on July 18, 2018 to participate in the recall. She was told that the unit was included in recall # 18-113 and advised her that they would send out a technician to conduct the remedy repairs (verification # [REDACTED]). Approximately a week later she received the repair kit.
On August 23, 2018 she contacted the firm again to follow up on the repair appointment and she was told that they would reach out to a local technician.
On August 24, 2018 the unit stopped working. The submitter contacted the firm and she was told that a technician would come out the following week. The submitter said she had to buy a new unit because there is an elderly person in the home and the temperature was around the 90’s.
On August 29, 2018 the technician conducted the repair and noticed that the unit failed due to the defect described in the recall. The technician advised the submitter of the findings.
The submitter claims that if the firm would have sent out a technician sooner, the unit would not have had an incident and she would not have been required to purchase another unit.
The submitter has been communicating with [REDACTED] about a reimbursement but her request has been denied.

Additional Information
When the Tech came to install the recall part, the Tech ([REDACTED]) called me and I told her to forget installing part, as I was getting a new unit the next day. She wanted to go ahead, to avoid and responsibility on my part. When installing the recall part she called me again and said I needed to contact Goodman, as the recall part not replaced caused the unit to quit.
My A/C service person quoted a cost of $519.00 to repair the existing unit, and it would take 7 to 10 days to receive the parts, he couldn’t be without A/C that long.
I talked to Gwen at Goodman, she refused to reimburse me for the new unit. I told her what my A/C person said about the cost, she the same as called him a liar, She said the parts would cost $60.00. Me, my family and friends have used him for years, he is honest and trustworthy.
I told her to get the parts and send a technician to repair the old unit and I would use it as a backup. She was to submit this request to her “boss” and respond back, which she never did.
Goodman needs to be held responsible for their product performing correctly.
I am enclosing my letter to them, a copy of the invoice from my A/C repair person, Goodman needs to be responsible for the workmanship in their products.
I would appreciate any help you can assist me in this situation

Hospital admission Made Jan 19, 2016, sent to the company Jan 29, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 16, 2016
The product, in the report: Variable speed Air Handler with COIL and 4-ton R410 Heat Pump
I have recently learned that I am far from the only consumer who has experienced a premature failure of an indoor evaporator coil on a Goodman Manufacturing Co. heat pump/AC. Our unit was purchased in mid-2009. In sales literature, the company claimed that its coils had undergone rigorous testing:”Then, to ensure consistent comfort, every coil is tested three times to detect leaks, and not just the obvious kind. We test for the smallest possible leaks, so small they may only surrender one ounce in ten years. That way, you will never have to worry about costly refrigerant escaping or an unwanted service call to address leak-related system problems” (Goodman “AIR HANDLERS AND COILS brochure dated 11/07). Although the coil is under warranty, the labor and R410a refrigerant and refrigerant recovery parts have led to our being billed over $700. Twelve POUNDS of R410A had apparently bled out inside our home over who knows how long. The system would have been running inefficiently as a result, resulting in higher utility bills and excessive wear on the motor. Whether the leaking refrigerant was responsible I cannot say, but during the time we owned this heat pump I experienced heart arrythmia (multiple cardiac arrests), and lung issues that someone at Mayo Clinic believed looked like sarcoidosis in the lungs (sarcoidosis was later ruled out, I understand). Then came congestive heart failure and in 2014 a heart transplant. Please know that I’m only 62. Until my early 50s I was regularly bicycling to work -- about 14 miles round trip. I think I was in my 50s when I hiked up Pike’s Peak on the Barr Trail, too. These health issues hit me out of the blue. My wife wasn’t similarly affected, but I had retired early and had become basically a hermit within our home, so my exposure to indoor air pollutants would have been greater. Search Goodman coils on the internet and it won’t take you long to find info on a class action lawsuit over these coils, or multitudes of complaints. Goodman has clearly known of the issue for years. But did Goodman or the local dealer who installed the unit let us know that this was something we should regularly check for so we could avoid spewing the refrigerant into the air, waste who knows how much electricity, or allow excessive wear and tear on the motor? Did Goodman recall the darned things or offer to cover the cost of labor and R410A replacement? Nope. We heard not one peep from them. The company may claim that the small leaks in the coils aren’t harmful to one’s health. Maybe that’s true. But ask the company president and its directors to a confined room, haul in enough bottles of refrigerant so there is 10 pounds of refrigerant per person, open each bottle a crack and ask them to stay there until the bottles are empty. Think you’ll get any takers? I hope you, or the FTC if you think that agency is a better fit, will hold their feet to the fire. From what I’ve read, there is no excuse for them to have allowed this to go on so long. You’ve got the power; please use it.

The product, in the report: Heating and cooling system
I purchase a house on July 2013. In August I turned heater on and smelled awful like house burning. We found out odor coming from heater and shut down the heater. The burning metal odor is not going away . Makes me cough and tight in my chest. The smell comes input of ceiling vents even air conditioning is on but not as bad as when heater is on. The colder outside the worst the odor. Odor comes out worst when system in aux heat mode or emergency heat. Goodman replace furnace and told Chinook heating and air conditioning rep to correct lots of installation mistakes and odor still here. I got a second opinion and am told the odor is the odor of hot metal burning odor. It is the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger and coil made of aluminum. It gets very hot and odor comes out of registers in ceiling.
