The product, in the report: Carrier HVAC system

I purchased a manufactured home from [REDACTED], and have experienced ongoing HVAC and flooring issues since installation. The HVAC system (Carrier unit) has consistently leaked water into the vents, causing damage to the ducting and potentially creating mold and air quality concerns. Despite multiple repair attempts and warranty claims, the problem persists.

The warranty provider ([REDACTED]) and home seller ([REDACTED]) have both refused responsibility, citing exclusions or deferring to one another. The manufacturer ([REDACTED]) has also been unresponsive in addressing the defects. My home has become unsafe for habitation, especially for my small children, due to potential mold exposure and structural damage.

I am currently in the process of contacting all responsible parties and regulatory agencies, but I have not received a resolution. The warranty provider denied my claim for ductwork, despite the damage being caused by a defective installation. I am seeking immediate intervention to ensure that the responsible parties repair the home or compensate me for the necessary repairs.

The product, in the report: Carrier residential HVAC unit. 4 ton R410A heat pump split system with 10kw electric heat.

What Happened? I am reporting a safety concern related to a Carrier HVAC system with the Infinity System Control (-C controller) installed in my home in April 2024. The system was functioning properly until Carrier pushed a firmware update that caused a blower malfunction, resulting in erratic and unreliable operation.

The malfunction occurs specifically when the system is in Auto or Heat mode, which could potentially compromise the systems ability to maintain safe indoor temperaturesespecially when the home is unoccupied.

What Type of Product(s) Were Being Used? The product in question is a Carrier HVAC system equipped with the Infinity System Control (-C controller). Carrier has acknowledged that the blower malfunction was caused by their own firmware update, but has failed to provide a permanent solution.

Who Was Using the Product(s)? The HVAC system was being used by my family, including my spouse and young child, to regulate the temperature and maintain a safe living environment in our home. The system is also used to ensure the safety of our pets while we are traveling, as we frequently have a house sitter who relies on the systems proper operation.

How Were the Product(s) Being Used? The system was being used in normal residential conditions, with the thermostat set to maintain a comfortable temperature during both heating and cooling seasons. The issue primarily arises when the system is placed in Auto or Heat mode, leading to inconsistent blower operation and reduced system performance.

Were There Any Injuries That Happened or May Have Happened While Using the Product? While there have been no physical injuries yet, the defective system poses a potential safety hazard. Since my family travels frequently, the malfunction increases the risk of unsafe indoor temperatures that could lead to:

Heat exhaustion or hypothermia for our pets and house sitter during extreme weather.

Potential damage to the home caused by prolonged exposure to excessive heat, cold, or humidity.

Given the unreliable performance of the blower, there is a heightened risk of system failure during critical periods when the home is unoccupied.

How Did Any Injuries Occur? While no direct injuries have occurred, the potential for harm arises from the systems inability to maintain safe indoor temperatures due to the blower malfunction. This situation creates unsafe living conditions and exposes both occupants and pets to risk, especially during periods of extreme heat or cold.

Why This is a Safety Concern: Loss of Climate Control: Failure to maintain consistent temperatures can be dangerous, particularly for young children, elderly individuals, or pets.

Potential System Failure: Extended system malfunction may lead to complete failure of heating or cooling, creating unsafe home conditions.

I am reporting this to the CPSC because Carrier has failed to provide a permanent solution, despite acknowledging the defect caused by their firmware update.

I had a Carrier HVAC system still under warranty that caught fire. Luckily I was home at the time and not sleeping so I could prevent serious damage or death.

I contacted my HVAC provider who attempted to get repair parts. None were available nationwide. I got a promise maybe parts would be available in 4 months!

Even with picture, serial number and model number, Carrier plays games, we need exact part numbers.

I feel lucky no one was burned to death!

The product, in the report: Air conditioning unit/heat pump

The Carrier Performance Series 2-stage heat pump model # TP-WEM01-A is a health and fire hazard and should be recalled from the market. Details are as follows. During a maintenance check performed on May 24, 2022, by Reliant Air Conditioning of Irving, Texas, the technician found the interior insulation on the access panel had been sucked off the panel, leaving only a thin layer of the fiberglass insulation still attached to the panel. On June 30, a maintenance technician from Reliant Air Conditioning glued the separated part of the insulation to the panel and secured it with tape. The patchwork repair still leaves some fiberglass insulation exposed.

The failure of the access panel interior insulation is due to either a faulty design or a material defect. It poses two serious problems for consumers: 1. It is a serious health hazard because the suction generated by the blower motor is strong enough to detach the insulation from the panel and can pull fiberglass particles into the air stream which can get into a person’s lungs and cause permanent damage.

    2. It is a serious fire hazard because the aluminum foil cover of the fiberglass insulation can be sucked into the wiring or into the fan motor and cause an electrical fire.

The product, in the report: Brand new 2.5 ton 14 Seers Carrier Comfort heatpump split system. Air handler in the attic.

New 2.5 ton 14 Seers Carrier comfort heatpump split system. Air handler in the attic. This is a defective heatpmp which only produces cold and ambient air on heat mode, running constantly tyring to keep the house warm and costing a lot of electriciy. Auxiliary heat kicks on very often again causing increase in electric bill cause heatpump unable to warm house. Complaint multiple type to ac company installers that sold me the unit who said there is nothing wrong with the unit and is how Carrier is making their heapumps. Carrier heatpumps unable to provide heat. I think maybe there is a defective board, or reverse valve in new Carrier comfort heatpumps. I have been injured cause I am an old woman with circulation problem who almost froze to death this winter by new Carrier heatpump unable to blow hot air through the registers while the heatpump was running. This is poor engineering and defective product and CArrier company is not doing anything about it.

It is in my opinion that this product has been mislabeled by either the Florida Tampa Bay product Distributor for Carrier of Carrier or by Carrier manufacturing plant. I bought a heatpump, but the unit operates like an air conditioner. Carrier also sells Air Conditioners that look the same as heatpumps under a different product number. The heatpump comfort models numbers start with 25HCE4, while their same style Carrier air conditioner model number start with 24ACA4**C. May be the switch was done at the Carrier factory or distributor.

on our barely 1 year old Carrier Infinity AC, the heat pump failed. Our AC was not working. We were charged $500 by the company who came out to replace it even though it was considered “ under warranty”- There are other models of Carrier listed as Recall for heat pumps- and now, the electronic boards fail as well due to overheating. They are under Recall by Carrier- but not our model apparently. Carrier needs to accept fault and immediately Recall AT NO CHARGE to consumer.

The product, in the report: Carrier / Bryant Heat Pump

08/01/2020 Dear Bryant /Carrier: I bought two Heat pump/AC systems. For both systems, the outdoor units are Bryant, and the indoor units are Carrier. They were installed by the same contractor [REDACTED], roughly the same time. One of the systems(System No.1) was installed in my home in Columbia, Maryland on 06/09/2014. It had a water flooding problem in 2015. On 11/07/2015, the system was replaced free by [REDACTED]. On 11/21/2019, the system was found short cycling and was found leaking refrigerant. Now it need to be refilled every year. Another system (System No.2) was installed in my other house in Germantown Maryland on 06/20/2014. It stopped working in April 2019. On 05/02/2019, [REDACTED] repaired a refrigerant leaking problem. On 05/21/2020, the system was found leaking again. A contractor estimated more than $6000 for leaking search and repair, which is higher than a new system. I decided to get rid of the system, and replaced it with a [REDACTED] AC. System No.1 was found to leak refrigerant only 4 year and 14 days after installation. System No.2 was found to leak only 4 year and 10 months. Also, the leaking repair by [REDACTED] on system No.2 worked for only 1 year. ACs are supposed to work more than 10 years. It is not normal for them to work only four years. Because two systems have the same problem, I think there are may be something wrong in your product design or manufacturing. I hope your company can send people to investigate what’s wrong with your systems. I have already lost system No.2, and I am trying to save the system No.1. I hope Carrier/Bryant can give me a free leak search, which costs up to $2300. Attached is the timeline history of my two systems.

    Sincerely [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED]

    Heat bump AC System No.1

06/09/2014: System Installation Installation address: [REDACTED] Contract Date: 06/03/2014 Price: $4237 Installation Date: 06/09/2014 Contractor: [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] Indoor Unit: Carrier Model: FB4DNF0 Outdoor Unit: Bryant Model: 213CNA018 07/25/2015: Water leaking from the indoor unit. I opened the unit and found the inside coil dirty. I bought coil cleaner and sprayed on the coil. No leaking anymore. Problem seems solved. After careful inspections, I found out the air filter could not be held in its place. It flew up when the AC fan is on. The filter size is exactly the same ad it is marked on the cover of the UNIT. In order to find out what’s wrong with the filter, I compared it with another heat pump/AC system, which was installed in my another house roughly the same time. In this latter I name it as “Hear bump/AC System No.2”. Both system No.1 and system No.2 are installed by [REDACTED], and they are very similar. Both systems have carrier indoor units and Bryant outdoor units. The only difference is that the system in my Germantown is 2.5 ton and the system in Columbia is 1.5 Ton. In the system No.2, the filter is heavy with metal frame and washable. In system No.1 the filter is disposable and has paper frame. 05/05/2015 Contacted [REDACTED] for the Filter problem 08/05/2015: I contacted [REDACTED], and explained what’s wrong with the system. [REDACTED] denied any responsibility. I then filed a complaint against [REDACTED], to Montgomery county office of Consumer Protection case # [REDACTED]. 09/04/2015. Mediation by the consumer protection Office With the help of the Montgomery county consumer protection office, I got a response letter from the general manager [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] blamed me for washing and touched the coil. He also implied that I improperly changed the filter to paper filer. I proved with photo pictures that system No.1 came with original paper filter. Also [REDACTED] marked the size for filter replacement on the unit cover. 11/10/2015 New Agreement with [REDACTED] [REDACTED] offer to replace the system for me, for both indoor and outdoor units on the condition that I release [REDACTED] from further responsibilities and liabilities. I agreed and signed the new agreements. 11/17/2015: System replaced by [REDACTED] [REDACTED] replaced the system for me with a brand new Bryant/Carrier Heat pump/AC system. New systems are the same models as the original one. 11/21/2019: System short cycling Call Service to [REDACTED] Invoice : $212.20 The system is short cycling. I Called [REDACTED] for service. The technician [REDACTED] stated in the invoice that “the outside unit was tripping out on low head pressure”. He added 1 pound R410A refrigerant to the system and the system started to work again. 06/25/2020 . AC system blowing hot air 05/21/2010, Service Called $200 check [REDACTED]. by [REDACTED]. The AC system had been blowing hot air. I called [REDACTED], a Chinese contractor. [REDACTED] said that the system has a refrigerant leaking and refilled it. Heat bump AC System No.2 06/20/2014 System Installation Installation address: [REDACTED] Contract Date: 06/11/2014 Price: $5037 Installation Date: 06/20/2014 Contractor: [REDACTED] [REDACTED] Indoor Unit: Carrier Model: FBHCNF030 Outdoor Unit: Bryant Model: 213CNA030 04/20/2019: System stopped working. [REDACTED] Refused my service request. In April 2019, my AC system was found not running. I called [REDACTED] for service. The lady who answered my phone said my system was not installed by them because she could not found it in their database. I sent a copy of my installation contract and payment receipt to them. Then she said I was on their “No Service List” because I was a bad customer(Because I filed complaint against them for my Heap pump/AC system No.1 in [REDACTED] ). I told her I had to call them because my system has 5 year free labor warranty with them. After talking with her supervisor, she decided to send a technician to my place on 04/28/2019. 04/23/2019: File a complaint against [REDACTED]. Case # [REDACTED]. From the phone calls with [REDACTED], I was very worried that they would deny their responsibilities, as they did for my [REDACTED] system. I filed a complaint against them to Montgomery county consumer protection office. The case was assigned to [REDACTED], Investigator, whose direct phone is: [REDACTED] 04/28/2019: [REDACTED] refused to repair my system. [REDACTED] technicians came and checked my system. They made calls to their company and refused to repair my AC system. When I asked why, one of the technicians mentioned the general manager name [REDACTED]. I wrote an email to [REDACTED] to protest. I explained to them that I waived my right for free labor warranty for another system in [REDACTED]( System No.1 ). However, my [REDACTED] system(System No.2) is still covered by 5 year free labor warranty. 04/30/2019 : Montgomery county consumer protection Helped me again. [REDACTED], Investigator, from Montgomery county made phone calls to [REDACTED]. Then [REDACTED] called me and let me know that [REDACTED] agreed to fix the system for me.On 04/30/2019, [REDACTED] called me and scheduled to fix my system on 05/02/2019 Thursday Morning 8am -11am. I emailed [REDACTED] for the schedule. 05/02/2019: [REDACTED] fixed the Refrigerant Leaking problem. A leak searching was performed. The leaking spot was found in the outside unit. A copper pipe was leaking near the compressor. The spot was very hard to reach. 05/21/2020 AC blowing hot air. Call Service. [REDACTED] service Invoice $109 Service Company: [REDACTED]: Address: [REDACTED} The GAC service technician stated in the invoice that the system is completely flat. He estimated cost of the following repairs: 1. Leak Search: $2300 2. Coil change Labor only: $2100 3. Refrigerant Change $2000 Total cost is much more than a new system. I decided to get rid of the Bryant/Carrier system and get a new one 05/27/2020 : Get rid of the Carrier/Bryant system A [REDACTED] new system was bought and replaced the Bryant/Carrier system, by [REDACTED]. The product, in the report: Carrier heat pump, the inside coil component.

I have a Carrier heat pump (FK4DNF005000AAAA ) in my home. The coil completely rusted out after 9 years and released all of the freon into my home. This caused burning eyes, burning lungs and prickly skin. Carrier stated that the warranty, expected life of their product was 5 years. I have lived in other homes with units much older than this and in fact have never heard of a coil completely rusting out to the point of expelling the freon into the home. I would think Carrier would make it public knowledge that this could be expected of their product. If this product was in the home of a health compromised person this could be life threatening.
