The product, in the report: Heat and air unit , PTAC Amana Brand, has Goodman company label inside (example unit in adjoining room)

Structure fire occurred in an occupied memory care facility. Fire originated in the Amana Brand PTAC (heat and AC unit) and was controlled by a sprinkler system. There were no injuries. The fire involved an AMANA PTAC. The label in the unit that caught fire was destroyed , but the room next door had what appeared to be the same model unit, it was Amana brand by Goodman Company, model # PTH093G35AXXXCA. Serial # 1909047194. This unit is very similar to an unrelated fire we had several months ago and found an active recall on a separate model number- CPSC recall #23-779. Fires origin appears to be in same area of PTAC as previous fire under recall.

The product, in the report: Amana PTAC - Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners/Heat Pumps

Hello – On 11/13/2018, we experienced an Amana PTAC power cord fire similar to those described in the Goodman recall detailed here: http://www.regcen.com/35kwptac/ Our units are much newer and not covered by the recall which included units manufactured and sold between January 2007 through June 2008. Ours were purchased on 3/8/2012 and have been in continuous operation with appropriate monthly and seasonal maintenance ever since. Fortunately the guestroom in which it was operating was occupied and the guest was able to turn it off and call for assistance before the electrical fire spread beyond the outlet box (see attached photos). Neither the inline GFCI nor the 20 Amp double pole 240V breaker tripped. Measured circuit voltage at the time of the incident was 250V AC, no surges, under voltage or other power interruptions were experienced. I ordered and replaced the damaged components and left a message with the manufacturer’s tech support team after Amana’s recall department declined my request for repair parts due to the fact that our units (20, total) are not covered by the existing, older CPSC recalls. Model: PTH093E35AXXXAC Serial #: 1203107158 Purchased 3/8/2012 from www.TotalHomeSupply.com Please let me know what other steps to take. Regards,

The product, in the report: Amana PTAC HVAC Unit. Model#: PTH153G35AXXXAA Serial#: 1311417772

I have an Amana PTAC Unit installed in the sun-room on my house. The model is #PTH153G35AXXXAA with a serial number of 1311417772. At about noon om April 19th there was a loud bang and when I went to the room it was filled with smoke. The smoke was coming from the Amana PTAC unit. We immeadiately turned the breaker off supplying power to the unit and watched to make sure there was no fire. After the smoke cleared we couuld see an oily substance on the unit so I called an electrician to make sure the unit was off. He said that the compressor line had exploded and it appeared the freon blew out of the unit. When I went on line I found out my unit had a recall on it but I have never received any recall notice. My unit is still under warranty according to the serial number and Amana Product Warranty. I have sent in the info for the recall notice but I AM AFRAID TO HAVE THIS UNIT REPAIRED. I would like the unit replaced and do not know what other steps are necessary to get this accomplished.

Noticed that the wall unit was on for an extended period of time without shutting off ... room temp was over 84degrees. Unit thermostat was set at 68. Tried to turn off unit with OFF button. Did not shut the unit off. Decided to pull the plug from the wall. The plug physically burned my fingers when unplugging. It was fire hot. This unit would have most certainly caught on fire

The product, in the report: Amana Heat Pump For Heating and Cooling Home Model Number: GPH1348H41BC Serial Number: 1205314254

We bought a forclosed home and bought a brand new heat pump unit to hook up. This unit is about 2 years old. Recently we had an ice storm and lost power. Once we knew the power was off my husband turned off the breaker to the heat pump. This would prevent the heat pump from running once power was restored. My husband new if power was restored and there was ice on the heat pump it may tear up something. Once power was restored 2 days later after the ice storm, the temperature in the house was 58 degrees. In order to keep the heat strips from running because we didnt want to use so much electricity my husband turned the breaker on but we set the thermostat temperature to 59 degrees. The heat pump only had to heat the house within 1 degree of the outside temperature. This was on 14 February Valentines day of 2014. Once we heard the unit come on and felt air coming through the vents we assumed all was ok. We left the thermostat set on 59 degrees and left the house to go out for Valentines day date night. We left the house approximately at 5:30pm to go out. At that time the heat pump was functioning normal. We got a call at approximately 10:30pm telling us our house was on fire and we needed to come home. We rushed home to find our home fully engulfed in flames and most of it already gone. They were not able to save anything in our home. We lost everything. The fire chief filled out a fire report and has said the origin of the fire was “Heat Pump” and the possible cause is the Heat Pump Motor. The material ignited was “Flooring” - what we believe happened was the heat pump caught fire and when it blew the air through all the air vents it also blew the fire through the vents. The most/worst damage is right where the heat pump is located and the main trunk line sends the air. Once the flames were blown through the vents it started burning under neath the home. Once I got the fire report and knew that the cause was most likely the heat pump I was talking to some friends who did some research and sent me a link to a recall that Amana has on some of there units. The website is http://www.recallowl.com/Consumer+Recalls/Household+Products/Goodman+Company+Recalls+Amana+Heating+and+Cooling+Units+Due+to+Fire+Hazard. When I researched on this website I seen where there were other fire hazards reported for certain models of Amana Heat pumps. The exact model and serial number that I had is not listed, however maybe it should be. I seen that the manufacturer of the Amana heat pump was actually Goodman Company so I called the company and all I could do was leave a message. I left a message saying I had a question about a recall and ask for them to return my call. I did not receive a call back.
