The product, in the report: Trane Products - Heat Pump and Air Handler Air Handler - Hyperion™ XR Model Number: GAM5A0C48M41SAA
I purchased a new home completed in February 2012. It has a Trane Products A/C system with a Heat Pump and Air Handler. The Air Handler is a Hyperion™ XR - Model Number: GAM5A0C48M41SAA.
As with many similar systems in Florida, the Air Handler is located in the garage in an area built above the ceiling level. To minimize the monthly maintenance, the system air filter is located inside the air handler unit, not at the return vents inside the house.
As stated on the Trane website, “Every Trane Air Handler is packed with high-quality components. Each helps ensure that time after time, your unit will provide total comfort your family can rely on. The Hyperion™ includes: • Uniquely designed cabinet • Fully enclosed insulation • All-aluminum coil • High-efficiency Vortica™ blower motor (GAM5 models only) • Unique modular design • Electronic expansion valve metering device that is 400% more reliable than standard expansion valves • Quick-turn fasteners • “No leak” drain pan made from rust-resistant composites and built with a gradual slope • Heating options for either hydronic or electric heat • Corrosion-resistant finish”
The problem is the combination of “Fully enclosed insulation” with inadequately designed “Quick-turn fasteners”.
The cover which must be installed for the unit to run has two “Quick-turn fasteners” that are difficult to engage. The cover plate seal must be collapsed for the fasteners to reach and catch to ensure fully enclosed insulation.
On May 30th of this year the HVAC service technician was finishing the reassembly of the unit after an issue with the thermal expansion valve. He saw I had a filter and asked if I wanted him to change it. Since the ladder needed to be moved, I said I would take care of it after he left. I had changed the filter on a couple of other occasions.
I was having difficulty in engaging the fasteners so I increased the force pushing on the unit to collapse the seal. The ladder I was on moved, then buckled and I fell approximately 10 feet onto the concrete floor. The fall resulted in four broken ribs. I was lucky.
I contacted Trane and received a very terse response. Trane denies any responsibility and disagrees that there is any issue with the design of the fasteners. If the fasteners were 1/2” longer they could engage without having to collapse the seal. If the filter holding unit had a small door instead of the large cover plate, they could have different fasteners. There are many inexpensive solutions to this issue. The Trane representative told me to have the HVAC service technician change the filter once or twice a year even though the owner’s manual states that the filters should be changed monthly.
For user safety, the cover plate needs to be redesigned or that type of installation must be avoided. This should include existing units as well as new units prior to sale.
