The product, in the report: portable electric heater: “Optimus Digital Oscillating Heater Fan with LCD Display” but purchased through Houzz online: shop@houzz.com
I purchased two portable heaters. I removed one from the box, and read the directions. It said to plug it in and push the on button. I did that. The digital thermostat said 80 degree, and I pushed the button to lower that to 72. I then began to gather the plastic wrap etc to throw in the trash. In those seconds, I smelled a plastic-y or dust burning type smell. I thought it might be because it was new and being turned on for the first time. I looked at the heater, and within a second or two saw a small wisp of smoke from inside the “grate” of the heater body. Before I could react, at the base of the the wisp of smoke emanated, a small flame erupted. I was shocked, and before I could react, the flame grew up rapidly, and black toxic smelling smoke began to pour from it. I kind of panicked, afraid to touch it with my hands, but had to move it aside to get to the cord to unplug it. I hesitated but then just grabbed it from the sides. Luckily it was not hot yet at those spots, I guess, because I did not burn my hands. I unplugged it. By then it was really burning. I got the slider door open and got the heater onto the concrete patio. I got a pitcher and began throwing water on it. My neighbors came out from the smell of the burning plastic, but we did not call the fire dept. because I got it out with the water. I immediately reported the product defect to the entity from which I ordered it, Houzz, although they are not the manufacturer or the direct vendor. I have the fire-damaged heater, and will hold it per your request for 30 days, and the other new heater is still unopened in the box. PS [REDACTED] is my second home. Mailing address is on [REDACTED].

No one hurt Made Dec 11, 2013, sent to the company Dec 19, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 6, 2014
The product, in the report: Optimus Heater Fan Item H-1382 with oscillating heat and auto-shut off feature (which did not shut off as plug was burning up)
This is regarding an Optimus Heater Fan with plug burn damage. It is item # H-1382. I purchased this fan heater to use at my work. I use it just about an hour or two in the morning to take the chill out of the air. Yesterday I smelled plastic burning coming from the unit at the electrical outlet and immediately pulled out the plug and I had the electrical engineer examine it. He said it was not the electrical outlet, but rather the plug that was burning up (internally). Part of the burn discoloration extends up the cord for about an inch or so. Most of the burn was located at the end of the plug which even melted the electrical wall socket protector. I have photos showing the burnt plug.
This unit has only been used less than a year and not used but just 5 days a week for about a couple of hours (at the most), and even less usage in the warmer months… It was a good thing that it didn’t happen while I was away from my desk as it could have started a fire. Please let me know if there was a recall or others that had this same issue with their units. I bought this unit because it had the safety features (like tipping and auto-shutoff) but even now, I will try to remember to turn any heater fan off when walking away from my desk, even for just a few minutes, as it was a scary moment….
This is NOT an issue with the electrical outlet. It has been thoroughly examined and the issue is the Optimus PLUG, which is shown to be burnt from the inside and even along the cord, as it melted onto the electrical outlet. The engineer that investigated said that the only damage on the electrical outlet is the plastic that melted from the cord, as he physically examined booth the electrical outlet and then the Optimus unit. No spark or fire occurred because I was in my office and was available to turn the unit off and unplug immediately after smelling burnt plastic. This would have resulted in something far more serious had I left my office!
I contacted Optimus and sent photos showing the cord (burning INSIDE the plug and ALSO burn damage inside the cord).
I bought a new [REDACTED] unit (in operating order with the red light on) and working just fine plugged into the other electric outlet that was not melted due to failure of the Optimus unit. The burnt remains of the Optimus plug is just below the current outlet used by the new [REDACTED] unit. Optimus stated that is was a faulty electrical outlet that caused their unit to burn up, but this would NOT be possible since I’m currently using the same outlet with another heater/fan unit.
Please let me know if you need photos of the Optimus unit that almost caused an electrical fire! Thanks for your time in reviewing this.

The product, in the report: Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater
I rested a white t-shirt on my space heater (Optimus H-5210) and it started smoking and set off my smoke detector. Several months later I get an email from amazon.com telling me this product was under recall. I recently called Optimus for a replacement, but they said it is ok for me to continue using my product and that the recall was really just a warning. Is this correct? How do I get a replacement heater if Optimus is not cooperating with me? Will I have to pay for shipping my heater back to them?

The product, in the report: Optimus Electric Heater Model H 5210. Date Code Dec. 2010
I have the Optimus Model H 5210. I have one heater in my office at work and another one at my home. While in my office, I walked by the Optimus heater with a long lab jacket on. The back corner of the jacket apparently touched the surface of the heater and I heard a singeing sound. When I turned around to look at the heater to see what had happened, I realized it had burned a square in the bottom of the lab jacket. After this incident, I relocated the heater in the office to avoid future accidents. I was suspicious the heater at home singed the dog’s tail but I wasn’t able to determine that. I relocated that heater, as well.

No one hurt Made Dec 12, 2012, sent to the company Jun 24, 2013, published by CPSC Jul 9, 2013
The product, in the report: 14” Oscillating Pedestal Dish
Consumer states the initial incident where the wires fell from the motor of the heater happen 1/15/12. The consumer sent the heater to be repaired, but received a refurbished heater in April 2012 instead.
The consumer stated that the heater was then only used once or twice because it was not needed because of the season change. Consumer reported the heater was now being used to heat the living room area of the home after 8 months of storage. The consumer had the heater plugged in for about 12-14 hours consecutively, but the heater has a temperature control. Therefore the heater only comes on when the temperature is below 75 degrees.
The consumer stated the wires that connect to the back of the heater seemingly broke out of the motor, while it was still plugged in. The wires began to spark and the consumer unplugged the heater. (12/10/2012) The consumer contacted the mfr. and spoke with [REDACTED] (Last name not given) and was told the problem was a user error.
Consumer stated the heater is not functioning and has been sent to a personal acquaintance for repairs.
There was no property or physical damage.

No one hurt Made Dec 11, 2012, sent to the company Jan 7, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 22, 2013
The product, in the report: Optimus H-5210. 400/800 Watts Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater
I purchased two Optimus Quartz Radiant Heaters Model: H-5210 in December 2011 from Walmart.
The heater that is used the most is very hot to the touch and shuts itself off after in use for a while. I believe that its “Thermal Cut-Off Safety Device” cuts the heater off due to overheating. (The other heater is just a backup and is hardly ever used.)
Subsequently, I read a report on page 52 of the November 2012 issue of Consumer Reports magazine which indicates that this heater is a Safety Risk and a Don’t Buy.
It also indicated that it contacted Optimus and Optimus claims to have fixed the problem on 2012 models. However, there is no way to tell the model year from the box.
When I contacted Walmart it said it can’t help at all because it is past 90 days from the purchase date.
I contacted Optimus which said if I want to ship it back to them in California it will fix it. The problem with that is that the shipping cost is almost as much as the purchase price.
However, I am more concerned with overheating and the safety of this product.

The product, in the report: White, approximately 12 1/2 inches high, main section oscillates on a base that has a safety switch on the bottom surface. The main section has power light in top center, lower on left is thermostat dial, on right dial for: OFF, FAN, LO, HI. The back of the main section is a rectangular grill-type area, many horizontal lines and 3 vertical lines with a circle enclosing 3 smaller circles arranged vertically.
Purchased early in year 2012 from Menards: OPTIMUS oscillating heater with fan, 2 heat settings and thermostat. I discarded box and receipt after 3 months as thought working well. Yesterday when cleaning carpet in my mother’s bedroom, I saw that the plug (without ground) had melted into the extension cord. They are now fused (melted) together. My mother used this heater daily, and I’m glad to have discovered this before disaster struck. Thank you.
