Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Lakewood model 5600/7 oil filled portable heater

The heater is a Lakewood model 5600/7. It caught fire (electrical).

There was a shorting sound and a bright white light came from the temperature control panel, and smoke came out the top of the control panel. I unplugged it and something remained glowing within it. The smoke stopped quickly. Neither the power strip nor the breaker tripped. The heater was too hot to touch, very much hotter than it usually gets, I had to put a cloth over my hand to move it.

The heater was in the baby’s room and it was in the middle of the night -- I’m glad I happened to be in there putting the baby back to sleep!
