The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Electric surround heater. Model number HHF36OW

My Honeywell HHF360W space heater caught fire during normal use on December 20, 2024. The interior ignited and the power cord set my floor on fire, causing property damage including flooring and clothing. I contacted Helen of Troy (the manufacturer). They demanded I surrender the heater without providing any evidence preservation protections. When I submitted five written conditions, they refused all five and closed my complaint file on January 4, 2025 without resolution

The product, in the report: Honeywell 360° digital surround heat fan forced technology model number HHF l370B part number of A006331R0

Bought a Honeywell 360° digital surround heat heater model number HHF370B Saturday afternoon (10/6/23) had plugged it in. About 9 pm that night I could smell a faint smell of burning electrical. I didn’t see anything wrong so went to bed. The next morning I went to go plug in something else and accidentally unplug the heater. That’s when I realized that the outlet had signs of damage. I went to look at the cord, and that’s when the horror sunk in. On the left prong for the plug, the bottom plastic holding it in was almost completely melted through the bottom. If I didn’t find it when I did, I could have caught my house on fire.

The product, in the report: Honeywell radiator style plug in heater with three temperature settings.

Plugged heater into the bathroom wall outlet and heard an electrical arching sound. The GFI outlet did not trigger but I unplugged the heater. I did a partial disassembly and found that the control switch has evidence of overheating/burning on the wire and evidence of charring can be seen at what appears to be the heating element. There also appears to be a loose or broken wire for the high temperature warning light.

The product, in the report: Honeywell heater Model: 360 SURROUND HEAT MODEL# HHF360V Serial #: SPM13791125119

Heater was purchased from Target store in Lathrop, California (off highway 5) in November 2016.

The Honeywell heater was used from November 2016 to February 2017. The heater was purchased because the advertisement represented it to be a “safety” heater, and was made with: 1. A “cool housing”; 2. “Over heat” protection; and 3. Exceeded “safety requirements.”

On the night of February 13, 2017, Ms. [REDACTED] took her boyfriend to dinner for his birthday and when they came back she was standing next to the heater talking to her boyfriend. Ms. [REDACTED] remembered saying the heater was kind of hot, so she stepped further away from it. She never touched the heater with her leg. She was always standing a few feet away from it. Ms. [REDACTED] and her friend talked for a few more minutes and then retired.

Her leg felt warm but not painful. She did not feel a burn and went to bed. When she woke up the next morning, she had “large blisters” across her leg. When she tried to turn the heater on the next day it would not turn on.

Ms. [REDACTED] stayed home from work and put a wet cloth on the blistered area. The following day, the blisters started to turn a dark color. Ms. [REDACTED] went to her Doctors for treatment. She continued to be treated by her Doctors every other day to apply bandages, and silver sulfadiazine cream.

Ms. [REDACTED] contacted Honeywell several times and reported the problem with the heater and her injuries. They did nothing to follow up with the product

For the next two months, Ms. [REDACTED] travelled to [REDACTED] two or three times a week for treatment of her “blister” burns. Her leg is still “pitted and ugly”. Ms. [REDACTED] intends on obtaining a “skin graft” and/or “plastic surgery” treatments to try to make the affected areas of “discoloration” and “pitting” appear more normal.

The front of the heater is buckled and melted in minimally four places from the overheating. The switch is melted as well. The switch on the heater makes a loud unusual sound it when you try to turn it on and does not function.

There is no doubt, this Honeywell heater was (and is) defective and is not fit for its intended use. That is the commonality and similarity with many other Honeywell recalled heaters. This heater shares common problems with other defective Honeywell heaters also.

Honeywell HZ-709 heater was used in a bedroom. It sat on a wood floor, no fabrics or curtains touching it. This morning discovered soot/scorch/smoke marks extending 2+ feet up wall from outlet. Entire outlet was melted, and ground prong of heater plug was completely reduced to ash. Breaker did not trip, smoke alarm did not sound. Our house wiring has been upgraded in the last 2 years, so faulty wiring is not an issue.

The product, in the report: Portable electric space heater

On 12/28/17 I purchased a Honeywell space heater to use When it got exceptionally cold. . On Saturday 1/7, the heater tripped a circuit in my living room and there were sparks when I unplugged it. I assumed, because it was new that the outlet might be bad so I put the heater in another room. It ran for a little while but then I started smelling burning plastic. I immediately went to unplug it and it shot sparks and fried the outlet. I then went online and started looking on Walmart and Amazon at feedback. There are many one star reviews were people say it smelled like burning plastic and someone saying it started smoking! This heater is a danger to human life and the lives of pets. I took photos of the charred plug and outlet.

I had been using the product for a few years without any trouble. One day I noticed a smell, but I associated it with the usual heater smell. Later in the day I went to run it off and almost burned my hand. The knob used to control the temperature was literally melting and was no longer attached to the metal post. I was able to turn it off and unplug it, and afterwards you can tell that the plastic around the metal post is completely burnt. It is as if the control electronics were in contact with the heating element. Not cool. This other link seems to report this problem.

I am writing to inform you of a product malfunction with the Honeywell Surround Heat portable heater. Last night, 2/28/2015, the heater was in use and the thermostat set at the halfway mark. After about an hour of use, the thermostat triggered the heater to start up. I heard sputtering and then blue flames were visible through the vents at the bottom of the heater. The next moment, flames shot out of the base of the machine as I leaped out of my chair and disconnected the heater from the power source. I only removed this heater a week earlier from the bedroom my two young daughters share, and I can’t even imagine the horror that could have possibly unfolded had this happened while they slept.

My space heater had been plugged in but turned off for several months. It was in my bedroom. One morning, I heard it turn on all by itself. I woke up and unplugged it, so no damage/injury occurred. If I had not been in the room, it could have started a fire because there were clothes piled near it. Nothing was touching the heater that could have pressed the power button.

Space heater (1-2 months old) was in use in an office. It suddenly began making an odd noise, so I looked at it. As I watched, it began putting out thick black smoke at the on/off knob. The knob was hot, so I yanked on the electrical cord to unplug it. The entire event was under 5 seconds (probably 3 seconds), but the on/off know was already hot! It was very sudden and I believe if I had not witnessed it, say I was in the bathroom, it could have caught anything nearby on fire.

The unit put out a lot of smoke in a short time period that smelled stongly of chemical. In a confined space, that may be very dangerous. Our office is very open, so it was of no consequence to me.

Looking at reviews of this product (on Amazon, etc), there are several reports of smoking/melting at the on/off knob and product failure. This product appears unusually dangerous.

Honeywell Low Profile Silent Comfort Heater, HZ-617 I purchased this heater on 8 January 2014 from Amazon. It was used for occasional supplemental heat in my daughter’s bedroom which is above the garage and colder than other rooms. On the morning of 28 February I went into her room to wake her and noticed the heater’s fan had come on even though the switch was not on that setting. I tried to turn the switch and there was an electrical shortage followed by billowing clouds of acrid smoke. I am sure it was about to catch fire. I unplugged the heater and rushed it outside. Obviously I wish I had paid more attention to the other reviews on Amazon citing the same and similar issues with this heater. My experience was clearly not the first. I can only conclude that there is an issue with this heater which renders it UNSAFE.

I have been using this space heater for about a month to heat my home office for approximately 6 hours a day. I recently noticed that the plastic housing in front of the heating element has become warped from the heat. Luckily we did not incur any fires or injuries but this is something that should be looked into further.

I have a Honeywell Surround Heater, Model HZ-0360 TGT. I have had the portable heater for less than one year. In the last few months, it has increasingly been difficult to turn the knob which controls fan and two heat settings. At times it was nearly impossible to turn on and off. A few times, I had to unplug the heater with the setting still “on”. Finally, yesterday, the knob fell off entirely, rendering it unusable.

I realize that this model was not part of the KAZ recall, but it still seems unsafe, and certainly impossible to use, safely or not.

I bought a Honeywell heater, model #HZ709 last year, using it for several months as an auxiliary heater to my furnace. I have used it this winter except for the last month. I turned it on tonight and noticed that it was getting very hot, not stopping at the temp I set it on. I unplugged it and noticed that there was black around my electrical outlet. I then examined the plug to the heater and found that it was slightly melted.

I then did a search to see if there was a recall and found a lot of complaints that have been made on this same problem. Thankfully, most of the people caught it before this product caused a fire. I know that Honeywell has been notified over several years of this same problem, but they are still selling the product. This product will end up causing a fire and possible loss of life and needs to be recalled.

I own several Honeywell oil filled digital radiator heaters. One of them nearly burned my house down yesterday and I thought you should know what happened. I had run the heater overnight and in the morning turned the unit off my pushing the on/off switch as usual. The unit clicked off, all the lights went off as usual and the unit appeared to be off. I left home for several hours, came home and went into the bedroom which was very, very hot and had a strange smell. I went to the heater which still had all of its lights off, still appeared off, and yet the unit was too hot to even touch. Obviously the on/off switch had shorted out and so too had obviously the thermostat. The unit was stuck on and was heating all day. This was a very dangerous situation and I an afraid to think what might have happened had I not come home early.
