The product, in the report: 1200 watt space heater
I have a Holmes brand space heater model number HFH131-N. Over time the 1200 watts of heat being blown out has made the plastic in the front grill brittle. Just barely pressing on the grill causes it to break off in little pieces. This exposes the hot coil inside to little fingers, where a serious burn could result. Though this unit has Intertek’s ETL Mark, it poses a clear hazard to little children. I wrote Jarden Corporation and the Holmes Group about this. But they did not respond.

No one hurt Made Nov 6, 2017, sent to the company Mar 6, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 20, 2018
The product, in the report: Holmes portable heater, model: HFH 108 This is an electric space heater approximately ll”H x 9”W x 5”D. On its face are a thermostat control in the left lower corner, and a power switch in the right lower corner. The above complaint concerns the power switch, which has 4 positions: (1) Off, (2) Fan, (3) Heat 1, and (4) Heat 2. Compaint above, basically, is that wires to power switch are not securely connected.
Holmes electric heater model: HFH 108. Stopped working so opened it up to investigate. Found that 2 of the 4 wires which should have been connected to the power switch were unattached and floating loose. On closer inspection, all four wires to switch connect via push on spring contacts, with barely 1/8” wire stripped and inserted into switch. Amazed at such a mechanically poor method of connection in an appliance which is constantly vibrating because of fan.
Have never reported a product before, but have never before seen such such obviously faulty design.
Thank you.

The product, in the report: Holmes HQH307 Space Heater
I am an electrical engineer that investigates electrical failures. I often work for insurance companies or attorneys.
I investigated a fire that resulted in some fire damage to the home and 2 child fatalities.
Area of fire origin was at a Holmes HQH307 space heater.
Unit was determined to have a high resistance connection at the power cord to space heater crimp inside the heater.
Several exemplars were obtained with a similar defect.

The product, in the report: Holmes Oil Filled Radiator Heater HOH3000B. Black in color
I opened the box and assembled the casters on the heater on January 18, 2016. The assembly went well and I immediately put the unit in operation in my master bedroom. The unit worked well until Monday night. After about 45 minutes of operation the hot oil sprayed from the rear of the heater and sprayed two walls, one window and window treatment, school books, sub woofer for sound system, side of credenza, baseboards and carpet. It is a mess! The window treatment was so saturated oil is still dripping from the blinds to the threshold of the window. The smell of the oil was and still is over powering. So over powering that we have not been able to sleep in the room. I have wiped down everything, cleaned the carpet with a home carpet cleaning unit, but it only mad a small dent in the smell. I have run an air filter unit in the room since January 25th to help eliminate the odor. Our cloths closets are on the other side of the bedroom, but the oil smell has gotten into our clean cloths. The smell is also in our bed linens even after the first wash to remove it. This is a very serious problem. I have two asthmatic children and I am very concerned about their exposure to the smell.

The product, in the report: Holmes Ceramic Heater Model HCH1823M ceramic heater that is portable.
Heater stopped working. A few days later it was working when plugged in. Used for a few days intermittently. Today it sparked and started smoking. We unplugged it and sparks stopped. Set in tacked unit outside on metal can. It fell off (1 1 foot) and landed in metal/wood garden basket. Looked outside and saw 2-3 foot flames at doorstep. Used metal fireplace rod to get it into middle of driveway and used fire extinguisher to put it out. All that was left of heater was scraps of metal.

No one hurt Made Nov 20, 2014, sent to the company Dec 2, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 16, 2014
The product, in the report: Oil space heater. Its color was black and it was purchased at Target approximately one month ago. The manufacturer has it advertised on its webpage at: http://www.holmesproducts.com/heaters/HOH3000B-TG.html#start=2 It is worth noting that I wrote a review on the manufacturer’s site describing the incident. My intention was mainly to alert future buyers that this could actually happen to them. Surprisingly the manufacturer censored the review and never allowed it to be posted.
I had a Holmes space heater in a bedroom. My 19-month old baby was playing in and out of that room while I was in the adjacent room. He cried loudly and, when I came to see what was going on, there oil sprayed everywhere in the wall (as if you had thrown a water balloon towards it). There was a couch close to the heater that was drenched in oil and there was also more liquid in the carpet right underneath the heater. All of the above accompanied by a strong burning scent in the room.
It’s worth noting that the baby never tipped the heater as it was upright when I came into the room and, at his age he is not able of lifting it. Also worth saying that there was no evidence of him touching the heater because I inspected him thoroughly and he had no signs of a burn.
I had bought this space heather about a month ago from target so it was practically new.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 5, 2014, sent to the company Oct 14, 2014, published by CPSC Oct 28, 2014
The product, in the report: Holmes Low Profile heater Model HLP3300B Metal and plastic housing, black, with rotary control knobs (off-low-high and thermostat). NEMA 1-15P polarized plug.
I recently received a Holmes electric space heater as a gift. The very first time I plugged it up, within minutes the control panel caught fire. Fortunately I am both a nurse and a volunteer firefighter/officer and was able to remain calm, unplugging the heater and carrying it outdoors to the front porch until the flames self-extinguished. As I write this, I have extraction fans running to suck the cloud of noxious, choking smoke from my home. The incident affected two victims, myself and my adult son who resides with me. Symptoms included coughing, respiratory distress, eye irritation, and headache. Respiratory symptoms were alleviated by removal to fresh air pending the extraction of the smoke. Both of us still have headaches and eye irritation but no acute distress and normal vital signs. Because the event was quickly limited by unplugging the device and removing it from the structure before flame spread could occur, fire/EMS activation was not required. (As a fire lieutenant, however, the incident will be reported as a “near miss.”)
I am horrified that in the year 2014 we still have so many poorly made, outright unsafe products flooding the American market. This is by no means the first space heater I have seen catch fire, but it is the first one I have seen to do so within minutes of its first use and the first one to do so in my own home. I am just thankful that, as a firefighter, I have a very high index of suspicion when testing any new appliance. Because I was directly observing the heater when the flames broke out, I was able to take very swift action before any flame spread could occur. Had this heater been purchased by a typical American purchaser who naively trusts the safety certification marks to actually mean anything, the outcome could have been tragically different.

The product, in the report: Space Heater
Our new Holmes Space Heater ...ModelHCH18l3M caught fire last night in our family room. It burned inside the unit and melted plastic on the bottom (rug) and in the units mid-section. Since we were there and pulled the plug immediately, we prevented the fire from spreading. It is our believe that this heater could cause a major fire If the burning was undetected when it happened. Note: This unit had an Intertek sticker on the bottom. Intertek’s V.P. has denied that Intertek is their client. Further, he says Interteck has not even found Holmes is a company. Note: Holmes has not even responded to our email.

The product, in the report: Holmes Portable Electric Heater
With the prolonged cold snap in the mid-west (11 degrees last night!) I was delighted but somewhat curious to find that Target had donated a number of these brand-new, unopened and unused heaters. Now I know why. Good news: The small unit pumps out a lot of heat. Bad news: You better sit next to it and watch it at all times. One of my frisky cats knocked it over, face-down, and it did not shut off. It got hot enough to scorch the vinyl kitchen floor tile and the much-heralded overheating sensor failed to work. Had it been on carpet, etc., this thing could have started a fire that would have burned down the house! Now we know why Target so kindly donated these units to Goodwill instead of destroying them. Thanks, Target.

The product, in the report: Electric heater, sitting about 1ft high, 2.5 feet wide.
I had purchased a Holmes Heater model#: HLP3300B about a year and half ago from a Target retail store. The unit has been used infrequently, but mostly on cold evenings during the wintertime. Approximately 2 weeks ago, I smelled a plastic burning odor emitting from the top of the heater while it was turned on. I turned off the unit for the evening after inspecting it. The unit visually appeared to be ok. On 03/20/2014, I turned the heater on a high level. After approximately 45 minutes of being in use, I heard a fizzing noise, followed by a little pop with a spark emitting again from the top of the unit through the wire screen that protects the heating element. Almost immediately, smoke started to come out from the unit in the area where the on/off switch is located. I quickly unplugged the heater and removed it from the home as it continued to smoke. After ensuring there was no further risk of fire, I again inspected the unit and took notice that the knob to the on/off switch had melted on the bottom side.
I have contacted Holmes to inform them of this product issue. There have been multiple reports on the internet of this same issue occurring with this model heater. Holmes has indicated to me that there currently is no active recall. I feel that the chance for tragedy is extremely high with this unpredicatable unit.

I purchased a Holmes Ceramic Heater (Bar Code: 085190190; Model: HCH1823M-BTU) from the Sterling Heights, MI Target Store on January 3, 2014 . On February 3, 2014, after approximately an hour of normal use, the heater began to smoke and spark. I immediately unplugged the unit and the smoke and sparking stopped. About 1/2 hour later, while still unplugged, the unit began to smoke more extensively and actually caught fire. The fire was extinguished before causing any damage, other than to the heater.

The product, in the report: Holmes “My Space My Comfort” Ceramic Heater, Model HCH1823M-WTU. The bar code is 04889.4053252. The box says it is sold only at Target, but distributed by “Sunbeam Products, Inc., doing business as Jarden Consumer Solutions, Boca Raton, Florida 33431.” The heater came in several colors, but this one is/was white.
Dear Sir/Madam: Attached is my report regarding a defective Holmes ceramic space heater, which caught fire and burned on 1/12/14 for no apparent reason during normal use. The heater was new, purchased at Target on 12/12113 as a Christmas gift. At the time it spontaneously com busted, it was sitting on the carpeted floor of my daughter’s bedroom. It was plugged into an outlet approximately 18-inches away and had been running about 2 hours at the time it caught fire. The fire started inside the heater itself- there were no clothes, curtains or other flammables nearby. The fire burned the heater, melted a hole in its base, and spread to the carpet below. The smoke from the fire set off our smoke alarms and my husband was able to put out the fire in the heater and stamp out the fire in the carpet. Photos of the heater and area of the fire are attached to the report. I have digital copies of these and other photos if you need them. Please contact me by e-mail at [REDACTED] or by phone at [REDACTED] (work) or [REDACTED] (cell) if you need additional information..
Thank you. [REDACTED]
Ceramic space heater caught fire and burned, destroying heater and burning the carpet on which it was sitting. The heater was new - purchased on 12/12/2014 as a Christmas gift. Prior to catching fire, product had worked normally except for periodically failing to oscillate properly. The fire/smoke set off our fire alarms, alerting my husband, who was able to put it out and stamp out the fire in the carpet. The heater had been running for approximately 2 hours when it caught fire.

The product, in the report: Holmes model HCH1823M ceramic space heater, 1500W.
A relatively new (less than two months old) space heater, a Holmes model HCH1823M, after operating perfectly fine five days a week since it was purchased, suddenly overheated and started a fire. The flame was small and contained within the space heater, but it could have spread to nearby combustible materials very quickly had the smoke not been immediately detected. Upon a sweep of the office, the cause of the smoke was quickly determined to be the space heater. It was immediately unplugged and removed from service. Wanted to report the fire in hopes that others using this space heater will know to watch it carefully whenever it is operating!

I turned on our portable electric heater to warm up our bathroom before I went to bed on Wed. 4/3. When I woke in the morning, I could smell something strange (like something burning or melting). I went into the bathroom where the smell was stronger but did not see smoke. I checked the heater and it did not seem to be working properly and the room did not feel very warm. The smell was stronger by the heater so I assumed something inside the heating unit was burning. When I tried to turn off the heater, the knob was hot to the touch and would not turn. I unplugged the heater at that time and turned on an exhaust fan to try to get rid of the smell. I still have the smell in my house. I checked the heater again this evening and tried to turn the knob, but it snapped off and I could see that it was partially melted.

I own, or have owned, 2 Holmes Model HLP3300B heaters. Both heaters were purchased in 2012. In 2012, one of the heaters caught fire. I thought it was a fluke and continued to use the second heater. Today, they second heater started smoking and the control knob melted down into the heater. I would think that this heater would have some type of safety feature that would cause it to shut off if it started to short out. Maybe it does, but it’s not working. Based only on my own experiences, I believe that these heaters are dangerous and should be recalled before someone is killed. I threw the first heater away, but I kept the second heater and took pictures. My hope is that Holmes might want to see why their heaters are catching fire. I’m assuming that they don’t already know this.

I have a new Holmes space heater that I was using in my small home office. It just caught on fire. I was working on my computer when I heard a loud pop and looked over to see flames shooting out of the front of the space heater. Luckily I do well under fire as I used to work for a hot shot crew fighting forest fires. I pulled the plug on the space heater and the fire stopped. It left the bad smell of an electrical fire. The product, in the report: Holmes Ceramic Heater Model HCH4962
My Holmes Ceramic Heater (model HCH4062) was functioning normally without abnormal sounds or lack of heat output. Suddenly a burst of flame, red glow, and smoke was produced at upper left of the front grill. There was a brief electrical sound of a “short” or “sparking”. I unplugged the heater, but it continued to emit the smell of burning plastic and fumes for a few minutes.
I attempted unsuccessfully to first contact Holmes directly 3 ways as a courtesy to Holmes with information about the incident that company engineers might use to improve future products.
1) I waited and waited on hold for customer support at 1-800-546-5637 without reaching a service representative.
2) I tried completing the online form 3 times. Each time I received error messages that did not indicate what was wrong with my form data. https://secure.holmesproducts.com/contactus.aspx
3) I searched unsuccessfully for an email address at the holmesproducts.com web site.
I would have been happy to report to Holmes directly, but, since this failed, I decided to instead report the incident at www.saferproducts.gov. It’s unfortunate to have a heater burst into flame. But by reporting the incident some good may come of it with better product design or component specification that make future consumers safer.

I went down to the basement and was on an elliptical for 30 minutes. When I came upstairs, I could hear the smoke detector. My husband was home and heard the alarm first, so he was already near the bathroom yelling, “FIRE.” The upstairs bathroom was filled with smoke as was most of the bedroom and hallway.
