The product, in the report: ECO-heater, model 110400 : this is a 2’ X 2’ X 1/2” sheet of calcium silicate, with some form of electrical heating element molded into the unit, and a single on/off switch.
I purchased an Eco-heater, model 110400, on April 8, 2011, at an Ace Hardware, in downtown Berkeley, CA. Upon opening the packaging, I noticed a strong odor, similar to a new plastic product smell. I installed the heater and used it for about 3 weeks, All of this time the heater, whether turned on or off, gave off this odor. On May 19, 2011, I e-mailed the manufacturer directly, and their customer rep replied that they had some problems with a few of their heaters off-gassing, and they would replace the unit with a newer model. I received the newer model, NA400S, around May 25, 2011, and replaced the old model 110400. The new model works well and I am having no obvious odor problem with it. I retain the old model 110400, in it’s original packaging. I have asked (5/19/11) the manufacturer for information on the source of the odor, with the model 110400, since I would like to know what I and my wife have been breathing for several weeks. As of today, I have only heard that the person in charge is unavailable, and that they have been testing their model 110400. Their response to me about their testing is about the efficiency of the model 110400, and some overheating problems, with no comment about the odor or the material causing that odor.
