The product, in the report: This heater has a 2-prong ever so slightly polarized plug which is unsafe. The plug is missing the grounding prong and shouldn’t be offered for sale. Amazon is aware of the issue.
I have purchased a Comfort Zone Milkhouse Heater model #CZ798 on Amazon. The heater has a 2-prong plug which is unsafe (lacks a grounding prong) and shouldn’t be offered for sale at all. I have posted a 3-star review describing the problem so Amazon is aware. Still the heater is up for sale. It should have a 3-prong plug to be safe.

This is a severe fire hazard. It does not have to be plugged in for long before it burns out the wires behind the receptacle and the receptacle itself.
I purchased a Comfort Zone space heater model # CZ45EDG produced 5/2020 with Intertek 3130679. It shorted out 3 different plugs in the house and burned the wires behind the receptacles.

The product, in the report: Comfort Zone model CZ50BK 120 vac 60hz 1500w Date code 9/2019 Intertek 5001301 Model CZ50BK
On February 8th I smelt a burning smell in my home while my comfort zone space heater was running. I turned my heater off to investigate and found the outlet that I had the heater plugged into had started to burn and melt. Had I not caught it there definitely would have been a fire in my home. There appears to be no overheat protection associated with this device only a tip over switch is offered. This heater is not safe. I reported it to the company and they did not seem interested in this information. All they wanted was the receipt for the item if I would like a replacement and a bill and fire report if I wanted to claim any damages.

The product, in the report: see previous entry
This home electric heater was used as additional heat in a bedroom on January 31, 2020. The heater was not placed near any combustible item. For no reason the heater over heat and melted the plastic in the middle of the casing. No damage was found on the outside of the heater except for the melted hole in the top. The fumes were noxious and woke my wife up. She quickly pulled out the plug and put on the room fan to disburse the fumes. She has COPD and I am worried that berating the fumes has injured her respiratory tree. There was no damage to our house and no other fire was observed.
The heater is a howard berger company heater called comfort zone model cz448 1500 watts date 7/06/15 made in china conforms to ul standard 1278 I have saved the heater with the melted plastic hole (3 inches by 1 1/2 inches) on top for inspection.

The product, in the report: Space heater mfg by Comfort Zone Model #CZ499R Starting January 3, 2019 I began using the heater daily. Space heater has remote control. Even after removing batteries from remote, other remote controls would activate CZ499R, frequently. I live in a condominium with many neighbors close by. So, when I went anywhere, I began checking to make sure the heater was unplugged. I was concerned that a neighbor’s remote might also activate the space heater. I bought the item based on the recommendation of Consumer Reports. I also notified them of the issue. I called them this morning, They haven’t changed the assessment of the product to note that random remote controls could activate it. They did tell me to contact you.

The product, in the report: Comfort zone fan heater
I purchased 2 comfort zone heaters at Family Dollar in [REDACTED] Ohio, I had 1 plugged in directly into the outlet located in my bedroom I turn the heater on for approximately a hour or two at a time once a day when I’m not using it I would unplug the heater. Today I noticed while unplugging the heater that the plug on the heater has melted plastic that is burnt around the actual plug only located on one side the other prong appeared normal this made me very concerned, so I went to check out the other heater that is also frequently used for 2-3 hours daily I discover the same situation with that heater it also had a burnt plug not as bad but it is obvious. This is not a safe product I’m very concerned for consumers who have these plugged in while sleeping,

The product, in the report: Electric space heater, Comfort Zone, Fan Heater, Model CZ50BKDG with a rating of 120V AC 60Hz 1500W, Made in China, Date 06/23/2016.
On 12/08/2017 I, [REDACTED], received information regarding a reported space heater failure in [REDACTED]. I went to the above listed address and met with owner [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] reported she had taken a shower about 4:00am and left the space heater in the bathroom on the medium thermostat setting with the fan in the high mode. [REDACTED] stated at about 11:30am she was getting ready to leave the house and her bedroom smoke detector sounded. [REDACTED] wen’t into the bathroom and found the space heater on fire with flames rising about 18”. [REDACTED] unplugged the heater, splashed some water on it and took it outside. The only damage was a small burn mark on the linoleum flooring in the bathroom. I checked the outlet the space heater was plugged in to and it was still functional with no damage. [REDACTED] stated the breaker never tripped. I collected the space heater for further evaluation and reporting to the CPSC. An initial cursory examination of the heater shows fire damage from the interior to the exterior. The heater is a Comfort Zone, Fan Heater, Model CZ50BKDG with a rating of 120V AC 60Hz 1500W, Made in China, Date 06/23/2016. [REDACTED] reported she purchased the heater last year at [REDACTED] but based on the serial number appears to have been a Dollar General product. The product, in the report: Oscillating Space Heater
The consumer plugged in the space heater in his family room for use. The consumer had the space heater placed on an open shelf.
The consumer started using the heater on the evening of 1/17/16. The consumer would only use the heater in the evening.
Before bed on 01/19/16, around 10:30 pm, the consumer noticed that the heater stopped oscillating. The heater was still blowing out heat so the consumer went to bed.
At 1:30am (1/20/16), the consumer heard a loud crack sound come from the electric breaker. The consumer went to check and noticed that there were flames shooting up from the heater. The flames were reaching up to the ceiling.
The consumer unplugged the unit and started throwing water to extinguish the flames. The smoke alarms went off.
The consumer had smoke and soot all over his home. He had to ventilate the area to get rid of smoke from the home.
The consumer has smoke/fire damage to the ceiling, wall panel, carpet and shelf in the living room. The consumer will have to have all of the wall panel replaced. The ceiling and molding is charred. The heater melted into the carpet.
The heater was originally about 12 inches tall. After the incident, the heater has melted down to just about 2 inches (only base remaining).
The consumer called the retailer 1/20/16. He also contacted the manufacturer where he spoke to [REDACTED]. The consumer was asked the condition of plug, cord and outlet. The consumer informed her that all of those things were not damaged. The consumer explained the incident. The representative asked the consumer to send in photos and repair/clean up estimates.
The representative also asked the consumer to send back the heater to the company for an inspection. The consumer refused to send it back and kept it as an evidence. The consumer informed the representative that they can send out an inspector to look at the heater. The representative informed the consumer that they may contact local fire marshall to come out to look at the unit.
The consumer received a call from the local [REDACTED] fire chief who was advised by the fire marshall to inform him that if the product has been boxed up, it would be considered tempering with the evidence. No one came out for an inspection.
The consumer contacted Service Master for an estimate. The consumer had them send photos and estimate to the Comfort Zone directly via e-mail.
The consumer waited for a few days after sending the e-mail. He tried contacting the firm and was unable to speak to anyone. He constantly reached voicemail.

The product, in the report: Product: Space Heater Brand: Comfort Zone Model: CZ530WM Mfg date: 07/2014 Dist by: Howard Berger Co. LLC. Product: Space Heater Brand: Comfort Zone Model: CZ530WM Mfg date: 07/2014 Dist by: Howard Berger Co. LLC. Sold by: Wal-Mart Country of origin: China Purchase date: Winter 2014/15 Possible serial #: 67650-2/cz530wm/092414
Space heater had not been turned on or used for around one month, although it was left plugged in. The On/Off switch in the OFF position, thermostat set to the lowest setting, Hi 1500w/Low 1250w switch set to Hi, unit in standby/off mode, with only power running to the on off switch on the unit. The room temperature was around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so there was no attempt for the heater thermostat to activate due to temperature change.
With no indications of a problem, the male end of the units electrical cord shorted, made a buzzing sound, followed by a bright arc like an electric welder, the plug started blazing. I pulled the cord causing the plug to release from the female receptacle, extinguished the flaming plug end without further damage to the house, myself or anyone else. The arc burned away one of the plug prongs, melted and burned the plug end leaving a burned out void where the prong would normally protrude out of the plastic. Luckily, this occurred while I was home, and awake, sitting 3 ft away, where I had a chance to take action. I’d hate to think what the outcome would have been had I not been able to intervene, or worse yet had I been asleep.

Has assorted information on the bottom sticker, including “Howard Berger Co., Inc”, “Fan Heater”, “Model: CZ35”, “Rating 120V A. Also has a small white sticker on the bottom that reads “66783/CZ35/160914”
Purchased a Howard Berger Co., Inc. Comfort Zone portable heater (model CZ35) from Menards in December of 2014. Used it roughly once a week, for a few hours at a time through February. Today I turned it on, and the heater warmed up, but the fan did not work. I did not leave it like this, but if I had, I’m concerned it would have overheated and started a fire. I fiddled both switches, and tried it again. It heats up (a lot), but the fan does not come on.

Compact Fan Heater caught fire purchased from one of the dollar chain stores in January 2014. The heater had been running earlier but caller had turned it off before going to bed the night before. The caller had been out of the house approximately two hours.
He returned to his home to find that the heater was on fire as if it had just burst into flames or exploded. The fire itself appears to have been located at the heater, floor and paneling but there are pieces of plastic stuck to a door, the floor etc. His sink is porcelain and is now cracked where it wasn’t when he left.
There are no injuries to be reported The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but does intends to contact them.

The product, in the report: I purchased the heater from Wal-Mart in Carlsbad,NM for use in our motorhome. When I plugged it in, it began to produce heat, but smelled odd. A few seconds later, smoke poured out of the back of the unit and it blew the outlet breaker (a 15A breaker). After resetting the breaker, the unit wouldn’t turn on at all, even as a fan. I returned it to Wal-Mart 11/23/2013 and replaced it with a different model. The address I have used in the form is my home address. The incident, as I said above occurred in New Mexico at an RV Park. The product is called a Comfort Zone Multi Purpose Compact Small Room Ceramic Heater Model CZ442WM. It is clear that the internal protection circuitry is insufficient to prevent causing a fire if the line circuit breaker doesn’t trip in time.

Comfort Zone CZ499R Oscillating Tower Heater I bought this heater in the fall of 2010. It had a made on 8/2010 sticker on the bottom. It worked very well. Always kept the room nice a warm. However, in November 2011 I started noticing a burning smell. Then power button (not the on off button) stopped working. Then today it just stopped working all together. I noticed on the bottom a burn mark and hole. I looked around the area where it was sitting and sure enough my carpet has burn marks on it now. I took the bottom plate off to find that the coating around the small wire connecting to the power button had burned off and the wire disconnected. The wire was lying on the bottom of the unit, hence the burn mark. This is why you should never leave these space heaters on unattended. So in summary, it works great until the it starts to melt down!
Read the Amazon.com reviews, several say they started smoking or had the same issues that I did.

The product, in the report: Space Heater
Complaint involves “Comfort Zone” heater, model cz792, manufacture date 07/10, purchased at Tractor Supply in St. Albans VT in fall of 2010. I recently noticed that when the heater was set to it’s lowest heat setting, the heater would stay on continuously instead of cycling on and off. I unplugged the heater and stopped using it. I disassembled the heater and found that the weighted (plastic) arm that is supposed to mechanically open a circuit on the thermostat had melted and was laying in the bottom of the heater (pictures available). This would cause the heater to remain “on” if it were tipped over. I do not know if this melted arm somehow interfered with the operation of the thermostat causing the heater to stay “on” all the time when the thermostat was set to it’s lowest setting.
I also noted that the thermostat is wired to interrupt the “neutral” side of the incoming power instead of the “hot” side.
Additionally, during troubleshooting I found that the main power/mode-select switch had several hundred ohms of resistance between the “hot” side contact and the respective outgoing contacts.

The product, in the report: “Comfort Zone” model CZ798, 120VAC 1500W electric space heater. Grey rectangular case, 14” tall, 9-3/4” wide, 6-3/4” deep inclusive of front-facing handles and rear louvers. Bears a label on the bottom stating “Made in China 07/11” with a “Conforms to UL STD #1278” statement, etc.
Electric space heater tipover switch melted during operation and dropped to the bottom of the space heater. Bimetallic tab-type thermostat glowed bright red during operation and ultimately welded itself closed, causing constant-on heater operation. This is the third electric space heater to malfunction in this manner.
The “thermostat” mechanism carries the full current of the heater coils, and is a fire hazard due to contact pitting, resultant series resistance, and final always-on operation. If left unattended, temperature will rise to dangerous levels.
