Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: White Rodgers Type 1F80-0471-20-30vac white thermostat

At about 08:30 am our thermostat located downstairs began to smoke and smelled of electrical problem. When item was examined we noted that the 2 AA batteries contained therein had apparently leaked and corroded thereby causing an electrical short. We did not realized that the unit was also battery powered. There was no indicator that was lit at the time of the incident on the display so as to tell us there was a problem.

The product, in the report: White Rodgers programmable thermostat model 1F85-275

The White Rodgers programmable thermostat model 1F85-275 (date code E1-0817) installed in my home in December, 2008 by an HVAC technician leaked battery acid in the unit, rending it inoperable. I see that White Rodgers has a recall on a similar model 1F85RF-275 for the same reason, overcharging of the batteries causing them to leak which could cause a fire hazard. The same thing has happened with this model installed in my home, and the thermostat had to be replaced. Calls to the White Rodgers recall center produced no results or help.

Made Feb 17, 2012, sent to the company Apr 6, 2012, published by CPSC Apr 20, 2012

The product, in the report: programmable thermostats

The consumer noticed that in 10/2011 that the furnace indicated that the heat was on but the furnace was not blowing any heat. The consumer contact Blue Dot which was a furnace repair company and a technician was sent out. In 10/2011 the relay was replaced on the furnace.

Around 12/2011 the failure occurred again with the furnace not blowing out any heat so Blue Dot was contacted again. The technician advised the consumer that the thermostat was causing the relay to burn out and the reason why was unknown. The relay was replaced again in 12/2011

On 1/3/2012 The consumer noticed smoke coming from the basement area of his home. The furnace was in the on position but the fire box had caught fire. He powered the furnace in the off position and the fire extinguished itself. The proper authorities were not contacted.

On 1/14/2012 he contacted a HVAC contractor and he came out to the home to replace the furnace due to it no longer working.

While doing some research online the consumer came across a recall (see Release #11-096) and his model number and date code was affected.

The thermostat was installed in spring of 2011 by Delmarva Power Energy Wise rewards program. When the thermostat was installed the consumer was provided the instructions from the company and noticed some information was blacked out with a magic marker.

The consumer was advised by the technician that installed the thermostat not to use the AA batteries that were required. The consumer stated that he has not contacted the firm of the thermostat but plans to do so.

He wrote Delmarva Power Energy Wise rewards program a letter and will be mailing it out soon.
