The product, in the report: HVAC internet connected smart thermostat

I own an ecobee3 smart thermostat that was installed about 6 months ago. It has operated fine until a few days ago. I happened to notice the thermostat said the house was over 90 degrees, but it clearly wasn’t. After closer inspection I found the face of the thermostat to be very hot to the touch. I removed the thermostat from the wall for safety.

I contacted ecobee’s tech support and did some troubleshooting with them. Since this is a smart thermostat it keeps temperature logs for history. The tech said he saw the thermostat got to over 100 degrees the night I noticed the problem. The logs showed the temperature rising at about 1 degree a minute before I disconnected it.

With their tech over the phone we concluded it was not a wiring issue. I happened to have a second ecobee that was still new in the box to replace a different thermostat. We connected the new one and it operated fine. They are sending me a replacement.

While I really like this product, I’m concerned about its safety given this incident. I feel lucky to have caught the problem when I did. I’m concerned the thermostat would have caught fire if left unnoticed.
