Emergency room Made Feb 24, 2012, sent to the company Apr 17, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 19, 2012
The product, in the report: Majestic Vermont Castings natural gas vented fireplace, glass front. Model 36BDVR RN.
At approximately 5:15am on February 3, 2012, a houseguest turned on the Majestic Vermont Castings gas fireplace in the living room of our home. Approximately 2 hours later, my 9 month old son put one of his hands on the glass front of the fireplace, sustaining what the doctors ultimately concluded was a second, bordering on third, degree burn on his palm and areas of his fingers. My husband and I immediately took him to the Emergency Room at the Children’s Hospital in Denver. First, my son received intravenous pain medication from a team of nurses. Next, a team of surgeons assessed the wound to determine whether they believed a skin graft or other surgery would be immediately necessary. Next, were taken to the burn clinic for further evaluation. The burn clinic team assessed the injury, preliminarily concluded a skin graft would not be necessary, cut off the very large blister that had formed on his palm, and proceeded to clean, treat and dress the wound with a soft cast. My son returned to the clinic two more times, on February 10 and February 17, for additional wound evaluation and dressing changes. We have been instructed to moisturize and massage his hand several times a day for the next six months. The doctors said it is unclear at this point whether he will have any permanent scarring, discoloration, loss of feeling or effect on the dexterity of his hand.
