Made Oct 24, 2018, sent to the company Feb 8, 2019, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2019

The product, in the report: gas fireplace

The submitter is reporting her unit for posing a fire hazard. She first noticed the unit turned on by itself in June of 2018 and it failed to turn off with the remote. The submitter’s husband had to shut off the gas supply and kept the gas off for the next few months.

She contacted the retailer, Martin Sales and Service earlier this month to report the issue and request an inspection. The technician arrived on October 11, 2018 and conducted some cleaning maintenance. The technician advised the submitter that the unit was working fine. The gas was turned back on.

On October 13 the unit turned on by itself and failed to shut off with the remote. The submitter’s husband once again shut off the gas supply. She contacted the retailer again and reported the incident. The technician told her that he contacted the firm and they advised the issue was the remote. The technician tried to assist her with troubleshooting over the phone.

She contacted the firm and they also informed her that the malfunction is due to the remote being controlled by the Wi-Fi or her TV. The submitter indicated that she does not believe this theory.

On October 23, 2018 she heard a clicking noise coming from the unit, like it wanted to turn on. She is thankful that the gas is shut off and the unit could not turn on but she said she does not feel safe using the unit

She indicated that she used the unit a few times during the winter and during the past winter it was used almost everyday.

The product, in the report: Gas Fireplace Insert

Caller stated that she turned on the gas fireplace, not an insert, a free standing vented fireplace, and it did not ignite right away, she smelled gas and she was about to power it off when she noticed a fireball inside which caused an explosion which blew off all the metal that surrounded the frame. After this incident she thought that the unit was inoperable but about 5 mins later after smelling gas there was another explosion she saw another fireball erupting in the firebox, she immediately switched it off with the remote control.

7/30/14 The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that they will contact the dealer to have the matter resolved.

Caller feels that the product is a fire hazard and should be recalled.

The submitter also stated that the unit never ignited correctly from first installation and was serviced twice. Once in May for this problem.

The product, in the report: Chaska XL direct vent fireplace insert

My wife tried a few times to turn on the fireplace using the remote, but it didn’t turn on. She tried again a few minutes later. When she pushed the button that time, there was a loud bang that scared her so much that she fell over the furniture and cut her leg. She then grabbed the kids, ran out of the house and asked a neighbor to call me at work. I called 911 and CenterPoint.

The fire department came, inspected the house and found no damage. Then CenterPoint came, shut off the gas to the fireplace and told us not to use it until it could be serviced noting “unit had delayed ignition.” We eventually had it serviced by CenterPoint in October and have been using it ever since...until we read about the recall last week.
