The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Enviro Vented gas Fireplace Heater.Model, Westport Steel

Purchased this free standing gas fire place. It smoked terribly when new. Filled entire house with blue smoke, for hours. Took hours to vent house out. Continued to smoke and smell even after hours of running stove. Store told me it needed to burn off the paints, sealants, and oils from manufacturing. It was so bad they eventually replaced the one that was installed with one from their shop, a floor model. They felt it had cured enough. It is not. It still smells, like chemicals, causes heath issues. My family gets headaches, and it causes our eyes to burn. This can’t be normal, or healthy. It feels like we are getting poisoned. The store sales man seemed upset and quite agitated we were complaining about the smell, and health risks.

The product, in the report: Enviro C44 Linear Fireplace, electronic ignition (no pilot)

On February 11, 2018, we were having a linear gas fireplace, Enviro C44, manufactured by Sherwood Industries, installed in our home. This is a permit process for Boulder County, new installation. My husband oversaw the final install and ignition. The installer used the remote to start the unit. In less than one minute, the unit exploded with extreme force. My husband sustained 17 stitches in his face (including a hole right into his mouth), glasses ruined, and major dental issues (swollen face and pain for 1 week, infection, loss of work). The installer had 7 stitches on his neck and arm. Fireplace Warehouse of Denver put us in touch with the manufacturer. Fireplace Warehouse will not refund the unit. Sherwood will not pay for any damages, including a refund. We hired a forensic expert for $1047 out of our pocket. They will need another $4500 to test the unit. Xcel Emergency was here right after the explosion and isolated the explosion to the unit. We feel we are owed compensation and would like to save the life of the consumer of the next explosive unit. Sherwood and Fireplace Warehouse will not pay for the 3rd party expert testing.
