The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Ventless propane fireplace from Home Depot. They sell it as am “Emberglow Oakwood 24 in.” But the CSA label says it is a “SHM International Model (B) VFT 22 LP” (Kennesaw, GA 30144). Purchased ventless propane fireplace from Home Depot. They sell it as am “Emberglow Oakwood 24 in.” But the CSA label says it is a “SHM International Model (B) VFT 22 LP” (Kennesaw, GA 30144).

I installed it in an existing metal and brick wood fireplace according to manufactures instructions and immediately noticed a prominent propane smell after it would ignite. Slowly over this past week I became dizzy, upset stomach, and nauseated with a slight headache (I do not normally get headaches). I purchased a carbon monoxide monitor and it immediately signaled dangerous levels.

There is nothing in the instructions about altitude restrictions however I live in Arco, Idaho at an elevation of 5300ft. Two different certified propane installers have checked the pressure and made sure there where no gas leaks.

All combustion air inlet holes are free of obstruction and the Oxygen Depletion Sensing (ODS) safety shutoff system did not activate. I have copious sources of combustion fresh air (I still have a 2ft square hole from a removed furnace chimney) that leads to the outside.
