The product, in the report: 564 HO Direct Vent Gas Fireplace (Greensmart) by Travis Industries

The product was being used to maintain heat in a bedroom area of 500 sq. ft. It was set to automatically adjust the flame height for the set room temperature. It was set to the lowest blower speed with both front and back burner flames turned on. 3-5 days after installation the modulator stopped working and was replaced. We then went on a vacation for one month, programming the room temperature at 70 degrees in smart mode to adjust flame height accordingly. Upon our return the flame height was spreading across the top of the firebox about 5-7 inches. When the unit would turn on and turn off I heard an ‘explosion’ sound that had force and was rattling the inside of the firebox and force against the glass. The gas valve was making some loud boom sounds moments after the front and back flames would extinguish. This too was loud and rattled the firebox and glass. Decibel ratings were above 90 for this noise. I also experienced other constant and repetitious ticking sounds that eventually prompted the vendor to replace the unit. However, other problems that I informed them of included, smelling gas when the unit would ignite the flames both inside the home and directly outside the home. There was also a very long delay for the igniter to light once the unit was turned on. The igniter flame grew increasingly taller, all by itself and was eventually about 8 inches tall. It would then light the burner flames with an even louder boom. I was afraid to use the fireplace and was recording audio and video and supplying it to the Travis Industries, Manufacturer once I began smelling gas, telling them that something is seriously wrong with the unit. The MFG. said they would send a rep. to look at it and never did. The vendor came out and immediately tore the unit apart without verifying any complaint. Then, problems occurred and got worse, eventually the unit was replaced. The unit also emitted a fire smoke smell once. However, I believe there still might be an issue with the gas valve, since, I still have a loud boom sound during the SMART mode operation when I let the unit control the flame height with the set room temperature. Therefore, I do not run the unit in the SMART mode at all. The unit I have now emits a strong smell as if something is burning inside the firebox, it does not go away unless I run the unit without using the back burner flames. But, when I turn on the back burner flames, my whole room fills up with a very bad odor. This unit has been on constantly since July 2013 in CPI mode or with small front flames. I have not noticed any gas odors with this unit [REDACTED].
