Unfortunate, but a friend took out my daughters Suzuki 493 just in our back field. He is inexperienced, the field does have its trees, bunnies, turtles, bushes, culvert , dips. So the eyes have to be everywhere. Unfortunately, the rider before he got on left the vehicle in neutral, motor running, and parking brake on. Unaware that the parking brake was on he drove a good 15-20 minutes in the back field and returned with the ATV ENGULFED in smoke, and oil literally boiling all over the differential. No clue did he have as to why the malfunction. He is inexperienced, not rough with it and was just enjoying the trails in my backyard, which is an old cornfield. We had just had the 20 hour break in service, so we really did not know what was going on. After investigation by Suzuki ( the repair shop sent pictures of the damaged parts) it was determined he rode with brakes engaged which created friction , heating up the guts of the differential, and caused damage to the differential from the heat . The ATV was very hot, and melted many parts, including the Fuel tank cover. The damages amounted to $2500.00. My point here, and what I sincerely want to advocate is had there been a brake Light, or alarm this would have never gotten this far. He had absolutely no knowledge of what the problem was. With the amount of damages and the degree of heat and smoke and enough to melt the fuel cover... im thinking he was pretty close to injuring himself and lucky to be alive. Not all ATV buyers have experience, many riders are very young. There are many obstacles to watch for when riding. The brake pedal is on the foot rest and the foot can easily be bounced on it when going in dips, etc. I do not know the statistics on these type occurrences, but I can share my experiences. I would be more than happy to share with you the damaged parts to provide you the extent of damage and support my request for the need, in the name of safety, a requirement for brake warning lights or alarms be mandated when manufacturing ATV’s.
