The product, in the report: A polaris sportsman 570 ATV used for recreational purposes
I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred with one of your ATVs, which resulted in significant injury. In October of 2022, while operating one of your vehicles, I experienced a brake failure that led to an accident, causing me to sustain a broken arm that required surgery to repair.
This incident has been deeply distressing and has had a significant impact on my life. Not only did it cause physical harm, but it also resulted in financial expenses due to medical treatment and lost wages from bein unable to work during recovery.

The product, in the report: Sportsman 570 EFI Sage Green Quad. Polaris
I own a 2015 Polaris ATV 570 EFI. Ever since I bought the ATV it started getting very HOT on the right side of the engine down by my right ankle. It gets so extremely hot on that side that I can not keep my foot on the peddle, I need to hang my foot out of the side of the ATV and that is VERY dangerous. I have contacted many Polaris dealers for information on what to do about this problem and they said we do not know. They said that they have never had any complaints and they do not know what to tell me about this situation. They were of no help. So I contacted Polaris customer service and told them of my problem and what the dealer said and they looked to see if there are any recalls and they told me there were not. They also told me they can not help me. At this point I am not comfortable riding my ATV. And for these reasons I am contacting your office seeking help to solve the problem that is causing me very high temperatures and possibly burning me. I just want to be able to ride my ATV without getting BURNED or hanging my foot out the side which is very dangerous while riding. If u need any more info do not hesitate to contact me. I really hope u can help, I do not know who else to contact or where else to go. Waiting for your response ASAP. Thank U, [REDACTED]. I live in [Los Angeles].

No one hurt Made Oct 24, 2017, sent to the company Nov 30, 2017, published by CPSC Dec 14, 2017
The product, in the report: 2016 Polaris Outlaw ATV
I purchased a 2016 Polaris Outlaw 110 EFI youth ATV for my 12 year old Granddaughter from Road, Track & Trail in [REDACTED] on 6·27-17. The seller had inspected and serviced the ATV and it appeared to be In very good condition. But since the purchase I have had several what I think are serious safety issues with it due to bad design. We ride at the Rocky Glen OHV Park in [REDACTED]. This park is 120 acres of varied terrain with plenty of dirt, mud and wet conditions. My Granddaughter is an experienced rider and this is her third season of riding. Problems associated with the Polaris Outlaw 110 EFI youth ATV1. The vent tube for the gas tank comes off the side of the gas tank filler neck allowing gasoline to leak out. This is particularly dangerous When transporting the ATV in an enclosed vehicle or trailer due to the accumulation of gasoline fumes.2. Most of the wiring connections are not protection from water or moisture damage. In my case this caused an electrical failure making the engine stop running while my Granddaughter was riding it. Luckily she was not hurt. I found the problem to be a bullet type connector where the male connector was brass and the female connector was plated, the moisture cause a reaction of dissimilar metals and the connection failed causing the engine to stop running.3. The CVT transmission housing has two open ended vent pipes that can allow dirt and moisture to enter the housing and cause it to malfunction. Mine has not malfunctioned yet but the possibility is there. In the owners manual they even show where there is a drain plug on the housing to drain water if it enters, so they know this is a problem. The drum brakes are not sealed in any way and do not work very well when wet which is a serious safety hazard. The thumb throttle is a poor design for younger riders. In my Granddaughters case her thumb gets fatigued in a short time making it difficult to operate the throttle. She has to stop riding and rest her thumb. This is a safety hazard when she is riding. Please note. My complaint is against Polaris not the seller Road, Track & Trail.

The product, in the report: ATV 4X4 all terrain vehicle basic red in color I purchased directly from the dealership and I have been the sole user
I was operating my 2015 Polaris Sportsman 570 and without change in travel it stops running. I attempted to restart the engine and was finally successful after 10 minutes or so. I slowly brought the engine RPM’s up but the firing was inconsistent (missing/popping). I noticed that smoke was coming from the exterior part of the muffler (not the exhaust port) and it had increased the temperature of the surrounding plastic to well over 200 degrees. I used a digital thermometer and observed the temperature of an exterior part of the muffler in excess of 500 degrees. I immediately turned the engine off and disconnected the negative wire on the battery. I began to slowly cool these areas with water from the garden hose.

The product, in the report: My unit is a 2015 Polaris 570 Sportsman ATV. On line comments refer to other Polaris models with the same issue, back to some 2007 models that I am aware of.
My 2015 Polaris 570 Sportsman stopped running while on a trip in July, 2016. To see if I had enough fuel, I removed the gas cap and found the gas was boiling in the tank. I removed a side panel and saw that the exhaust pipe coming out of the engine was directly under the fuel tank, and the tank was too hot to touch. A friend who was riding with me said he had the same problem with his [REDACTED], he removed his gas cap and was sprayed with vaporized fuel under pressure. I looked on line and found numerous complaints about the same problem. In some cases the seat on the machine caught fire because of the proximity of the exhaust pipe. This problem also relates to Polaris UTVs. Polaris has been aware of this unsafe and dangerous condition for at least nine years.

The product, in the report: ATV Product # [REDACTED]
The consumer stated that on 12/24/15 she used the ATV for about 25 minutes. The consumer parked the ATV in her garage after use. The consumer went out and came back into the garage within 15-20 minutes. She noticed gray smoke being emitted from around the headlight area. The consumer also noticed 1-2in high flames coming out of the same area. The consumer also smelled electrical burning odor.
The consumer took out the key from the ATV. She removed the panel from below the headlight area and removed the ECM. The flames went away immediately.
The consumer also took out the battery. The consumer stated that some of the wires around and coming out of the ECM have charred and melted. The receptacle where the ECM unit plugs into is also charred.
In the past, the consumer has had problems with the battery draining quickly. The consumer was replacing batteries at least 4 times per year. They had 6 incidents since owning the ATV where the battery overheated causing the outside plastic of the battery to melt. They had to replace the batteries.
The consumer contacted the firm regarding this issue. The consumer was notified that her vehicle is not under any recalls. They informed her to take it to a dealer to get the vehicle diagnosed. They did not provide any guarantee of reimbursement for the cost.
The consumer attempted to contact few dealers in her area. The consumer is having difficulty with the shops being closed due to holidays.
The consumer stated that if her vehicle is not under any recalls, then it needs to be considered for a recall because it has the same fire hazard as the ones being recalled.

The product, in the report: 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500; VIN: [REDACTED]
Sometime in 2008 the consumer purchased the ATV used from another person.
On 7/4/15 the consumer noticed the hot indicator came on after the ATV was turned “on” and the cooling fan was running slow. The consumer believes the Electronic Control Module (ECM) is defective. The consumer disconnected the battery because he believes the ATV can catch on fire. The consumer has been a mechanic for 45 years and inspected the ATV.
The consumer was online and came across recall # 05-568. On 8/28/15 the consumer called the firm’s recall hotline (888-704-5290) and inquired about the remedy. The rep (name unknown) informed the consumer that the ATV had the pinch coil wire replaced on 7/12/05. The consumer understood that the ATV would not receive another repair from the firm. The consumer states that replacing the pinch coil wire will not correct the safety hazard with the ECM and the firm is obligated to replace the ECM according to the recall.
The consumer used the ATV once a week. The consumer has stopped using the ATV since 7/4/15. The consumer has not had the ATV repaired since he purchased it.
The consumer plans to purchase the parts and have the ATV repaired and hopes the firm will reimburse him.
Included is a copy of the consumer’s receipt for a new ECM. This fixed the consumer’s problem with his ATV. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 2011 polaris 850 xp special edition
i was trail riding on my 2011 polaris 850 sportsman when i smelled something burning so i stopped to check it out and i discovered that the plastic above the exhaust was melted and also my seat. i loaded up at took to polaris dealer to find out what was going on they had the atv for 3 weeks talking with polaris. while they were doing this we researched and spoke with other owners and found out this happens a lot. it occurs anywhere from within a couple months of purchase to over a year or so, there were even a couple i found that had caught fire. while i was at polaris someone brought one in that was under a month old with same issue. polaris replaces the plastic if it happens in first few months but after that they wont. they said they know about the problem but wont replace damaged plastic the said they have a heat shield to fix but i have to purchase from them and install and to replace they damaged plastic and seat would cost me over 1000 dollars. when i talked to polaris i wanted to get some kind of assurance the atv was safe to ride and not catch fire like i heard of others doing but they wont say the bike is safe. i think if i pay 10000 dollars for a atv that ir should be reliable, safe and i should have to make modification to it because of a design error. the exhaust is less than half an inch from plastic with no kind of protection which is what causes the problem. besides from being out money for repair which may be a ongoing thing because of the design i also worried it could catch fire on me when i deep in the woods riding.

The product, in the report: 2009 Polaris XP550 ATV
2009 Polaris XP550 ATV. On Jun 19 2013 I discovered the front left hand side ball joints were loose in the knuckle assembly. Upon further investigation it revealed that the ball joint were loose in the knuckle and had worn out the knuckle assembly to the point it would not tighten on the shaft of the ball joint. This created an unsafe condition for riding the atv. I contacted my Polaris dealer who in turn contacted Polaris about the defect. Polaris refused to honor any repair even though it is very obvious there was a parts failure. There have been been numerous postings on the internet about all the XP models having this problem but Polaris refuses to address it.

The product, in the report: Polaris Scrambler 400 cc, vin# ([REDACTED]) red
My son [REDACTED] and I unloaded our atv’s to ride on our own property. I was riding a polaris scrambler 400cc vin# [REDACTED] and my son was riding a polaris 90 cc predator atv. I unloaded the atv’s from the trailer and dressed [REDACTED] with helment. We pulled the atv’s forward about 40 yards to start a campfire. [REDACTED] and I proceeded to follow back around to the trailer on the atv’s. I was following [REDACTED] about 10 feet behind and a speed of less than 3 mph. At the base of a small hill just before our pond, I turned my atv to the right to follow [REDACTED]. When I turned the handle bar to the right, my throttle went to wide open. I squeezed the brake as hard as I could but the atv was building rpm and power as I was approaching the back of [REDACTED] on his atv. I knew I was going to hit him from behind. My front wheels hit the rear of [REDACTED]’s atv tires making my scrambler go into a wheelie. I probably hit him at about 5 mph but full throttle holding the brake with left hand. I knew the throttle was stuck wide open. The last thing I remember was my atv was doing a wheelie climbing up the back of [REDACTED]’s atv and I reached up and turned the key off. Evidently my scrambler flipped over on top of me knocking me out for about 10 minutes. My son [REDACTED] took my phone off of me and called my wife for help. I went to the ER with head, face, shoulder, knee, and heel injuries. My son [REDACTED] broke out in hives and was rushed to another ER. Evidently the best conclusion as to [REDACTED]’s hives was that he was scared. I continue to have short term memory loss. After the accident I googled polaris scrambler to see if there had been any other similar incidents. Now I see there has been past lawsuits and complaints for the very same problem. My son was also knocked from his atv and also tipped his atv over from mine rear ending his. My polaris scramble is stored and the throttle is currently still wide open. Please respond with information on how I should proceed as for I have sufford injuries and damage as a result

The product, in the report: 2009 Polaris 550 XP built March 2009.
The front steering knuckle and upper and lower ball joints are completely worn out with less than 900 miles on my 2009 Polaris 550XP atv. The front left wheel actually fell off while I was riding. I checked and there is a recall on this very problem but Polaris refuse to do anything about it because my vin# is not on their list even though my vehicle fall under the required dates for their recall. Luckily I was only going slow at the time the wheel came off as just a minute earlier I was moving at approximately 30 mph and could have been killed if the tire had come off at that time.

The product, in the report: 2011 Polaris Sportsman XP 850 Touring
I am writing in regards to the 2011 Polaris Sportsman XP 850 All Terrain Vehicle. There is an extremely unsafe condition involving a defect in the valve cover, breather, and air box which allows the air box to fill with oil. This issue is well documented on various websites, yet Polaris has only offered to remedy the situation in rare circumstances. Upon contacting Polaris regarding this issue I was informed that they would not offer the updated 2012 replacement parts under my 6 month new ATV warranty.
This defect exposes the consumer to a potential fire hazard, contact with used motor oil, and increased air filter replacement costs.
While Polaris has updated the 2012 Sportsman XP 850 components to ensure there are no further issues, they have yet to offer a recall for the 2010 and 2011 models. Further, they have denied my request to cover the defects under my 6 month consumer warranty when contacted by e-mail. Polaris has made it apparent that they will not remedy this defect through good will or consumer warranty, and it is time for the CPSC to step in and help protect consumers from this hazardous defect.

The product, in the report: 2004.5 polaris sportsman 500HO 4x4 automatic forest green
I own a 2004.5 polaris sportsman 500HO. my polaris allways killed the battery with in two days of sitting.
I was using my atv for some work around the place. I smelt somthing burning and went looking for the smell. when i saw my atv it was bellowing smoke from the front of the atv. I ran over to it and cut the battery cable. once that was done the smoke started to subside. Once I was able to remove the plastic from the atv I noticed the ecm had melted pooring gew all over the wires. this gew started to melt other wires.
I got on the internet to see if there was a known problem and found the recall on the ecms. I contacted polaris with this problem. Polaris told me that my atv wasnt part of the recall and was not covered under warrenty. Polaris told me that I would have to pay for the repairs myself.
my vin number is about 2000 numbers from the recall. My father owns the same atv. I called him to notify him of my problem. At that time he told me that his atv always has a dead battery. He also stated that he has put in 5 new batterys and it still kills them.
my vin number on my atv is [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Polaris ATP Pickup 500 4X4
Consumer wanted to report that her Polaris ATV is a dangerous product. She stated that while she was riding the ATV it smoked from the ECM and resulted in her burning her hand as well as melting to all of the wiring of the ATV. The consumer stated that she was on the ATV for about 10 minutes then parked it to do some work, allowing the product to cool off for 20 minutes; then 3 minutes after she started the ATV again, it started to smoke. The smoke stopped when the consumer turned off the ATV and went to get a fire extinguisher and stated the smoke stopped when she got back to the product. The consumer didn’t call the fire department. The consumer suffered a slight burn on her right hand and the extent of her injuries is mostly smoke inhalation. The consumer did not seek medical attention.
The consumer’s husband called the firm at 800-765-2747 on 5/23/2011 and was told they could not assist them since the firm concluded that her product was not under recall. The consumer and her husband consulted a repair dealership. However, the product was bought from a private seller. The product had a few minor modifications as it had a cup holder and winch installed prior to her purchasing the product. The repair dealership had told the consumer and her husband since the firm won’t offer to do anything to help her and will fix the ATV, they can only fix the ATV at the consumer’s expense.
The dealer concluded that the ATV’s ECM cause the fire and was the same issue as cited in release in 08-193. The consumer stated that there is no charring or discoloration on the product on the outside but there is on the inside of the unit and reported that between the cracks of the culling near the headlight and front fender there is melted plastic. The consumer felt it was imperative to report this issue to the CPSC.
