The product, in the report: All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), 2020 Can Am Outlander

On 6/30/20 I had mowed our lawn and proceeded to pick up clippings with our lawn sweeper attached to our 2020 CanAm Outlander ATV. I drove the ATV 200 ft. when it popped and quit. Thinking it was out of gas, I took the gas cap off and was hit by a flash of fire. I quickly hit the ground and smothered my face to put out the fire that was singeing my hair. The ATV was clearly on fire at this point and my husband and I hosed it down with 2 hoses for 20 minutes. Fire still not out. my husband, with our backhoe, dumped 6 loads of dirt on it and was finally able to put the fire out by smothering it. The ATV was purchased 9/14/19 and had less than 10 hours on it, all of which were used for yard work. Research has shown us that BRP Inc. Can-Am had a recall in June 2018 for ‘Potential Fire Hazard’ and on the top of the list is the Can-Am Outlander. BRP refuses to acknowledge my incident for further investigation.

He contacted the firm today and reported the issue. They checked his VIN and advised him that his unit was not recalled. However, he noticed a recall for similar units having the same issue and he believes his unit should be included in recall # 12-709.

The product, in the report: 2010 Can Am Outlander 800

I am the original purchaser and current owner of a 2010 Can Am Outlander 800. Recently after a riding trip I noticed melted wires under the seat. After extensive research online this seems to be a very common problem with these machines. You see Can Am refuses to acknowledge there is a problem, refuses to issue a recall or offer to fix the problem, but yet they will sell you a repair harness for $50 to fix it yourself. Understand, there is such heat build up within these 3 wires that it causes the insulating wire casing to completely melt off all 3 wires. And the fact that they are within an inch of the gas tank vent and rubber fuel lines should concern EVERYONE involved. This whole problem stems from the wires being undersized in the design of the electrical system. Another issue I recently experienced with this exact same atv in which Can Am actually did issue a recall on but claims my atv did not fall under was the “Risk of loss control hazard”. During a ride a year or better ago we were traveling down a trail with a gradual turn to the right. Without warning the atv steering locked or jammed not allowing the rider to steer left or right causing the atv to leave the trail and go down over a 100’ embankment. Fortunately the rider was not severely hurt and able to jump off before the atv left the trail. I find it very ironic that my atv experienced the exact symptoms Can Am issued a recall for but was not included in the recall. I feel this problem is a lot more widespread than they like to acknowledge. For what its worth my atv experienced a significant about of damage due to that steering failure.

The product, in the report: 2013 ATV, 2 seat VIN # 3JBKGCN15DJ000042

The consumer purchased the used ATV from an online seller.

The consumer stated that the elbow that carry fuel to the engine broke. The fuel drained onto the hot engine and caused a fire. This happened while the consumer’s son was riding the ATV on a trail in Canada. The consumer stated that he was able to extinguish the fire with soda.

The consumer stated that his son was able to get out of the ATV without any injuries.

The consumer stated that the fire damaged the engine and melted the plastic around the engine. The consumer also stated that the seat belt release was only couple inches away from the fire.

The consumer spoke to an authorize dealer for the manf ([REDACTED]- Franklin, OH). The dealer asked the consumer to bring the ATV down to him. The consumer is taking the ATV down today (10/15/14). The consumer stated that the dealer will examine the ATV and get a hold of the manf in regards to the incident.

    Not included in any recalls.

The product, in the report: ATV

The main frame on my ATV broke and could have caused a horrable accident if I had not found it. The only reason it came to my attention was that I noticed a posting on a web site where someone else found theirs to be broken. I have taken it to the dealer and it has been there for 6 weeks. I am not the only one to have this problem as you can see from this post on the biggest web site on Can Ams below. BRP who makes Can Am products has refused to admit there is a problem and recall all the units they have sold. They supposedly have came up with a “brace” which will be bolted on to fix the problem. This in my opinion is not acceptable as the frame is the major structure and should be replaced then bracing could be added. BRP is doing nothing to repair the cracked/broken frame tubes.

The product, in the report: 2008 Can-Am Outlander 400 ATV. VIN - 2BVEGCM158000003.

2008 BRP Cam-Am Outlander 400 ATV purchased on 3/1/2010. ATV was new with a 3 year warranty. While riding I heard a rattling noise from under the seat. I took to the dealer & the dealer advised that they could not find anything wrong. While cleaning the ATV in March of this year I noticed that the fuel tan shield is cracking & digging into the fuel tank. This is the part that was rattling. The fuel tank is plastic. The fuel tank shield will eventually put a hole in the fuel tank. This could possibly start a fire. I took back to the dealer. The dealer contacted BRP. BRP refused to take care of problem. The ATV is under warranty until 3/2013. This is not a damage or wear & tear issue. This is a faulty tank shield.
