The product, in the report: 2018 arctic cat alterra 500 atv

Brand new Arctic Cat (Textron) 2018 Alterra 500 ATV, traveling down side of the road at 55 mph when suddenly the atv CVT belt got so hot it literally fell a part. As it began to fall a part the threads or strings got caught in the cvt clutch sheaves and locked them up. The primary cvt clutch is coupled to the output shaft of the engine so when the belt strings wrapped around the primary clutch sheaves it got wound up so tight that it stopped the shaft from turning dead in its tracks. I was absolutely not expecting this to happen and of course an atv has no seatbelt, the only protection is the helmet i was wearing thank god. As the front and rear axles instantly stopped turning without warning which was something i never new was even possible and surely with just 380 miles on the machine the cvt belt still had another 1500 miles to go before it should need to be replaced. I was at wide open throttle doing 54 mph when i heard a strange noise from the machine and then i lost control as all 4 wheels locked up at the same exact time... there was an suv in the lane closest to the side of the road i was next to and it was going about 65mph and traveling in same direction but i was in front of it by about 1000’. The atv wpuld not respond to my efforts to steer the machine away from the road, instead it headed towards the edge of the road which had a huge lip of about 6-9”. When the front left tire first touched the edge of the asphalt it caused the atv to bank to the right real hard and then my front right tire hit a huge washout and i was thrown from the machine and broke my right wrist. This is the 3rd time this atv has destroyed a belt because there is something defective with the primary drive cvt wet clutching assembly that causes it to heat up way beyond normal and then the driven cvt sheaves get so hot that the belt disintegrates and no “BELT” light came on or anything which is supposed to when it gets too hot. 342 deg F is what the cvt housing reads after just 8 mins of riding at any speed. Tons of ppl have had this same problem over and over and Textron tells everyone thats past the 6month warranty that theres nothing they will do to resolve the defect. my atv has 384 miles on it! thats nothing for mileage. first time this happened it had 103 miles. Took to dealership and they said they couldnt do anything since textron bought arctic cat out and textron wouldnt help the ceo’s own son if it came down to it. Im pissed. i bring my 6 yr old for little rides on that machine and if he was on it he could have been seriously injoured or killed. i could have been thrown off the atv and flown into the road infront of the suv and then my son would have had to live his life without a father. TEXTRON knows this is a problem! they lasted less then a year and sold to tracker but they need to be held accountable. no one should have to die before you pressure/ force them to hold themselves accountable. i have a $6k piece of garbage now that no one will buy from me because they are known for this issue and its extremely dangerous not to mention expensive to fix. Just put the 4th belt on it and at $180+ each and having primary replaced and then blew another belt, then had one way bearing replaced thinking it was the problem and boom blew another, had the primary rebuilt again and boom another belt gone. its not safe. im not spending $700 to have the wet clutches replaced on a brand new machine.

The product, in the report: All Terrain Vehicle

We bought an Artic Cat 366 in 2008 in West Virginia. This Artic Cat has been nothing but problems. First there were numerous problems with shifting into different gears. We even bought an extended service plan, only to find out the place we bought the Artic Cat at by our home had a new owner and decided he was not going to service Artic Cat anymore. We would then have to go up to at least Clarksburg, WV from Elkins, WV which was not an option at the time.

My sons drove this Artic Cat only for me to find out later it had flipped due to the fact they could not shift the gears going up a hill and God knows what else.

The Artic Cat seems to have more then numerous problems. Leaking gas, now the starter is gone, solenoid, numerous problems not starting.

I am just wondering if there are any other complaints on this particular model and if anything is being done about it. Seems ridiculous to spend over $5,000.00 and can barely use the thing.
