The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 13, 2024, sent to the company Aug 16, 2024, published by CPSC Aug 30, 2024

The product, in the report: 2020 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Hunter Edition

My 2020 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 caught fire while I was driving it. I had been riding it for a couple of hours and had taken a break because it was pretty hot outside. When I started it back up I noticed a small puff of smoke so I got off the atv and noticed a flame around the bottom of the engine. I grabbed a bottle of water and squirted it on the flame and the flame seemed to part and came right back like there was gas burning on the engine. I went to get another bottle of water and the atv burst into flames (as you can see in the picture). I filed a claim with Polaris and after their investigation, they said because it burned up they could not tell where the fire came from and denied my claim. In searching the internet, my atv was not the only 2020 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 to catch on fire. In July 2024 Polaris issued a recall of 2023-2024 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 atvs because of a faulty fuel pump flange that may leak fuel onto the hot engine causing a fire. The different models have different fuel pump kit parts numbers but I checked and they are interchangeable between the models. And from all the pictures I can find, it looks like they use the same pump flange. I’m not sure why Polaris only recalled the models they have on the sales floor.

The product, in the report: 2015 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP ATV

The ATV is engineered in a way that the right plastic covering the engin and muffler, abuts up to the hot muffler. The heat from the muffler has caused the plastic to melt and could potentially cause a fire. I have also burnt my leg at the location where the plastic is melting.

I called Polaris and they do not have any recalls and directed me to the dealership. Members at the dealership said this is a common problem but couldn’t offer a remedy to ensure safety.
