The product, in the report: Sports recreation vehicle ATV 2025 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 S Lava Orange Metallic
While operating a brand-new 2025 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 S ([REDACTED]) at a low speed on private property, the electronic throttle control (ETC) system suffered an immediate, uncommanded failure, pinning the throttle 100% wide open without operator input or thumb-lever pressure. The automatic safety fail-safes failed to engage or cut engine power. The runaway ATV accelerated out of control across the driveway and crashed violently into a stationary, parked [REDACTED]. High-definition home security camera footage captured the entire sequence, irrefutably proving the driver had zero thumb input and that the crash was caused entirely by an uncommanded electronic throttle runaway.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jun 9, 2026, sent to the company Jun 12, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 30, 2026
The product, in the report: 2025 Polaris Sportsman 850 four wheel drive all terrain vehicle. It is a full size utility ATV equipped with an 850cc twin cylinder engine and factory suspension components.
While operating a 2025 Polaris Sportsman 850 with only 14.3 hours of total use at a low speed under normal trail conditions, a catastrophic structural frame failure occurred. The front upper A-arm frame bracket completely fractured and separated from the main chassis due to what appears to be a manufacturing weld defect, specifically insufficient weld penetration or a cold weld. This sudden structural separation caused an immediate mechanical failure, snapping the front axle and locking the steering mechanism. The unprovoked loss of steering control directly caused the vehicle to roll over. An inspection of the failure point reveals that the factory Grade 8 mounting hardware remains completely intact and unsheared. The surrounding components, including the front bumper, rims, and A-arm tubes, show no signs of an exterior impact or collision force, as the bracket simply peeled directly off the frame tube. This mechanical failure and subsequent rollover resulted in personal injuries, including bruising and structural impact trauma, and extensive property damage to the vehicle plastics and racks. The vehicle was turned in to an authorized dealership, [REDACTED] Georgia, where the service department initially documented the issue as a structural defect under Polaris Corporate Case [REDACTED]. However, the manufacturer has denied participation in the repair, claiming an impact event to deflect liability for a severe structural manufacturing flaw. A chassis weld failure on a brand-new vehicle poses a severe, life-threatening safety risk to consumers.

First aid Made Nov 8, 2024, sent to the company Nov 22, 2024, published by CPSC Dec 9, 2024
The product, in the report: 2016 Polaris Sportsman 850
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious incident that occurred with my 2016 Polaris Sportsman 850, purchased brand new in October 2016 from Feldman Sales and Service Inc. in Howards Grove, Wisconsin (VIN: [REDACTED]). The ATV, which has been meticulously maintained and stored indoors when not in use, caught fire on July 16th, 2024, shortly after I finished using it to grade our driveway. The fire broke out just moments after I parked it in my backyard, causing significant damage. Fortunately, my family and I were able to extinguish the flames, but we narrowly avoided what could have been a devastating situation, especially since the ATV was parked near our wood deck and could have easily spread to our home. Upon further investigation, I learned that Polaris had recalled some ATVs for similar issues. However, I do not recall receiving any recall notices, and I am concerned that this particular model might have been overlooked. We did move shortly after purchasing the ATV, but all our mail was forwarded to our new address, and we never received any communication regarding a recall for this model. Attached to this email are photographs of the fire and the damage, as well as the certificate of origin for the ATV. I also have a video of the incident that I can provide upon request. I have always spoken highly of Polaris and have recommended your products to many friends and customers, given my previous satisfaction with this machine. However, this incident has left me deeply concerned about the safety and reliability of the product. Given the low usage and the diligent care it has received, I am shocked and disappointed that such an event could occur. I kindly request your assistance in determining whether my ATV was part of a recall. If so, I would like to know what compensation or remedy Polaris can offer in light of this situation. I would greatly appreciate any support or guidance you can provide to help resolve this matter. I have also consulted a legal professional who suggested reaching out to Polaris directly before considering other options. I trust that Polaris values its customers and stands by the quality and safety of its products, and I am hopeful for a resolution that reflects this commitment.

The product, in the report: 2016 Polaris Sportsman 570 EPS, red.
Right side of engine gets so hot that the side panel is warping, and your leg gets dangerously hot that you can’t keep your foot down on the foot rest as required by manufacturer for safety. I contacted a Polaris dealership and found out there is a service bulletin for this issue, but not a recall. The service bulletin expired in 2018, and the manufacturer will no longer provide the fix to prevent this dangerous issue. I contacted Polaris for instructions on how to fix the issue and confirmed they no longer will cover the safety issue. I purchased this four-wheeler from a third party, and I understand he was the second owner, so I’m the third owner. Unfortunately the issue wasn’t addressed in the past to have it fixed.

The product, in the report: ATV
The caller is reporting that on June 5th, 2023, he was riding his ROV on a dirt and grass, mostly level road with his 11 year old daughter as his passenger. They had been riding for a short period of time when flames began coming up from under the seat. He jumped off while grabbing his daughter to pull her off with him.
This caller and his father used 4 or 5 fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the flames and the grass around them before the fire department arrived.
He contacted Elkins Motorsports in Elkins, WV, [REDACTED] to inquire about the ROV. It cannot be repaired because it is totally burned.
He was encouraged by his attorney to create this incident report.

Death Made Jun 16, 2023, sent to the company Jul 3, 2023, published by CPSC Jul 25, 2023
The product, in the report: Red Polaris 2-Door ATV
This is being reported because there was a death that was reported to the [REDACTED] County Medical Examiner’s Office on 6/12/2023. The decedent was riding on an ATV around his father’s property. When decedent’s brother found decedent hutched over on the ground where the ATV was laying on it’s side. Decedent explained that while he was riding in the woods, he did not realize that there was a slight drop off in elevation which caused the ATV to tip over. Once decedent was brought back to their father’s house he was complaining of a “panic attack”, and rib cramps. His sibling noticed that his left arm was not working properly and he had trouble opening a water bottle, and helping himself up out of a chair. Decedent was taken to [REDACTED] Hospital where he was stabilized and then transported to [REDACTED] Hospital in [REDACTED]. When arriving at [REDACTED]it was determined that decedent had sustained a left flail chest w/fractured rib, multiple lung contusions, left hemothorax and pneumothorax, Grade 2 spleen laceration, no perfusion in left kidney, and left shoulder dislocation from the ATV accident. It is suspected that the cause of death is multi organ failure/system failure because of this crash.

No one hurt Made Apr 27, 2023, sent to the company May 2, 2023, published by CPSC May 16, 2023
The product, in the report: POLARIS Sportsman 800 Touring Model
At 4pm, Sunday, April 16, 2023, I drove my ATV out of the garage to hose off some dirt that had accumulated on the snowplow blade. The ATV was on a trickle charger, stored indoors in a heated garage at all times. I drove it approx. 50 ft. and parked it on a gravel area adjacent to my concrete driveway. I hosed off the blade in a minute or so. I then hosed off the underside of all four fenders. This whole process took 3-4 minutes. The engine was cold, the ignition was shut off and the transmission was in park. The engine was clean--no accumulated oil, grease, or grime and no gasoline leaks or odors. The gas tank had been filled a couple weeks prior and it was nearly full. The seats, engine, running boards, and utility boxes were all clean so I did not spray any of those areas.
After cleaning the ATV, I left it in place. I then backed my truck onto the concrete driveway and gave it a quick rinse with the hose. This only took 3-4 minutes. I finished all this about 4:10 pm. At this point, I looked at my ATV and thought: “I need to put that in the garage”. My pickup was blocking access to the garage stall where I park my ATV so I decided it could wait until morning. It had been a warm day and the weather was good.
About 9:20 pm I was in the kitchen reading when I heard a muffled boom that sounded like distant thunder. It had been a rather warm day so I thought thunder was certainly possible. I did not give it another thought. About a minute or two later I heard a second boom. Again, I gave it no thought. Then another minute or two went by and I heard a third boom. At this point things weren’t sounding quite right so I went out my front door (north side). It was pitch dark and calm, no wind. I thought: “what is going on?”. I then heard a noise on the east side of my house at the lower level in the garage/driveway area. As I neared the NE corner of my house, I noticed a large orange glow. When I cleared the corner, I saw that my Polaris ATV was completely engulfed in a massive inferno! Everything was on fire. The seats, gas tank, fenders, utility box, running boards, dash were all gone. All I saw was a burning frame and 4 tires on fire. My ATV was completely gone so I ran down to save my pickup truck which was only 10 feet from the burning ATV. I quickly moved the truck and then grabbed the garden hose, knocking down the fire in a few minutes.
At this point I fully expected fire trucks to come rolling up with lights flashing and sirens blaring. That never happened, which was puzzling. There was vehicle traffic on [REDACTED] approximately 1/3 mi. below my house. My house sits on top of a prominent hill and that fire could been seen clearly in many directions from 2-3 miles away. Nobody called. The next day I checked with the police/sheriff’s office to review their 911 logs from Sunday night. They checked from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm and nobody called in this fire. I live in the country about 7 1/2 mi. from town so it is very dark and quiet where I live. A fire of this size could not have been missed, but surprisingly nobody called it in.
In retrospect, the three muffled “booms” I thought was thunder were most likely my tires and gas tank exploding. I suspect the fire had been kicking up for at least 3-4 min. (5?) before I went outside and discovered the inferno.
After I knocked down the fire, I noticed that the fabric cover on my boat had melted in the bow area. The boat was only 5 feet from the ATV. I never observed any open flames on the boat cover. I stayed up until 11:30 to make sure a new fire didn’t reignite. Early the following morning, I inspected my [REDACTED] pickup for any fire/heat damage. I noticed that a small, plastic trim piece on the right front quarter panel had warped and buckled due to the heat. I took several pictures of the truck, boat, and ATV on my [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: See above
I purchased a valve cover kit (Polaris part number 2203004) for a 2003 Polaris Sportsman 700, model A02CH68AA/CA. The kit includes screws to fasten one component of the kit to another. The screws are smaller than the threaded holes of the component. In other words the screws do not fasten anything down.
I am filing a report because I returned the defective product to Polaris, told them of the defect and wanted a replacement. To my surprise the replacement they sent had the same defect. After filing a formal complaint with Polaris I was told “Certain vehicles require this larger screw” with the specifications and asking where they could send them to me. I responded to Polaris……… The screws come with a valve cover kit, the screws are integral to fastening a breather component (sold with the kit) to the valve cover. These screws are not vehicle specific, they are specific to the valve cover kit. This IS accurate: Polaris is selling a valve cover kit with the wrong screws.

The product, in the report: ATV
Caller is a retired mechanic reporting what he believes is a very dangerous situation with the 2001 ATV that he purchased in 2005.
He went to the gas station to pump gas but when he put the hose into the gas tank the area where the threads broke away from the top which is when he noticed that the cap where the threads are located is glued to the tank.
When it broke gas then ran under the ATV causing gas to run under the tank which he states could cause it to explode thereby seriously injuring any nearby persons or worse.
No injuries are being reported although caller did feel sick from fumes while taking it home from gas station. He is asking that someone examine these bikes to recall.

The product, in the report: Polaris Razor 800 EFI ATV
{REDACTED] I have a 2008 Polaris RZR it is leaking fuel this is neither good for the environment, nor is it safe. This was a manufacturers defect (a poor design) and has likely been leaking since new, but I was only recently was I able to find it. Polaris does not care, and has a history of not caring. [REDACTED].
The fuel leak I am speaking of is around the metal plate that Polaris haphazardly secured to the top of the tank, I am not alone, there are dozens who have posted the same problem, for the same year/make/model vehicle, dating back to 2008. Below is one site, but a quick [REDACTED] search for 2008 Polaris RZR fuel leak will tum up multiple other websites with similar postings. [REDACTED}
Polaris did have a recall for leaking fuel tanks, for some 2008 RZR, but I was told that mine was not covered by this recall. [REDACTED]
I had opened a BBB case in Complaint ID# [REDACTED]. Unfortunately they were unable to help. Note that I did contact Polaris at 1-800-765-2747 and spoke with their specialist, [REDACTED] [REDACTED}assigned me case [REDACTED] and asked me to bring my RZR to the local Polaris dealer which I did (Bridgeport Equipment and Tool in Ripley VW). Ultimately I was called by the [REDACTED} their service manager and told that Polaris would not allow him to open a dealer ticket because the vehicle was too far out of warranty..
West Virginia has a disproportionately high number of people who own ATVs. These manufacturers and Polaris chief among them have all set the bar exceedingly low. They have no concern for their customers or the environment. I ask that you step in on our behalf and urge Polaris to do the right thing.

I have 2 , 2016 Polaris sportsman 570 EFI and SP the ESP (electronic power steering ) started humming then locked up the steering could not turn it, then the engine stopped when the warning light come on, started the machine and it worked for about 3 minutes humming ,locked up engine stopped , did it a 3rd time same thing humming, locked up engine stopped. I then called the dealer Moto United Power-sports 801-572-6720 they will not fix it without a recall I then called Polaris they told me that year does not have a recall so no on the fix to have the dealer put in a good will warranty because it only has 59 miles on the machine, refusing to repair the dangerous product can’t ride it will kill someone if the steering system locks up, the 2015 and 2017 models have recalls this is a very dangerous thing Polaris and moto United power sports really need too fix this problem before something happens too one of my family or friends and neighbors.

The product, in the report: 2002 Polaris ATV
Purchased used 2002 Polaris ATV from private seller in 2013. On 01 June 2019 my 13 year old daughter pushed ATV from shed to beside our house and washed it. We were all inside waiting for it to dry, when I heard a strange noise coming from where the ATV was. After sitting by itself for 20 minutes and no one around it, the ATV caught fire just forward of the gas tank. I immediately used 2 fire extinguishers on it and put out the fire. The gas tank cap was melted off and had a 2 inch hole. The gasoline of 3/4 filled plastic tank was boiling. Although it was not very smart to get close enough to put it out, had I allowed it to explode, our home and family would have been serious damaged or destroyed as well. Although I’ve contacted the company, and even dropped it off at one of their dealerships, they don’t seem very interested in discovering why their equipment would burst into flames all by itself. We feel this is a very serious equipment defect that will lead to serious death or damage to other WA state residents (and others). Any help the AG office can give ensuring Polaris Inc. does not sell products that can self destruct is very appreciated.

The product, in the report: All Terrain Vehicle - Four Wheeler (not a side by side)
I was riding a 2015 Polaris Sportsman 1000 XP on groomed public trails in Wisconsin. Over some uneven/rough terrain, the entire front grill, voltage regulator, and fuse box completely fell off of the four wheeler.
This was due to poor quality cast aluminum parts that have fatigued to the point of shattering. I have pictures. No collision was involved.
Upon further machine inspection, stress cracks at A Arm mounting points were discovered due to inconsistent welds from the factory on the frame. This requires professional improvements which I will need to pay out of pocket for. I don’t mind doing that because I want to keep my four wheeler safe. But others may not know as much and a suspension failure at the wrong time could lead to major injuries or death.

October 20, 2017 Picked up my Polaris RZR S900 from [REDACTED] after engine repairs were made. Both sales and service staff informed me a manufacturing flaw in the engine cooling system had been found and was the cause of the engine overheating and subsequent damage to the engine. October 24, 2017 On a trip from [REDACTED] accompanied by five other off-road vehicles, my Polaris RZR S900 with a new engine overheated once. We immediately pulled over and waited for the engine to cool before continuing. No further problems were encountered during the rest of the trip.
January 12, 2018 Received a Polaris product recall notice via mail. The contents of this recall notice include the following statements:
- The CPSC and Polaris are informing the public about fires on model year 2013-2017 Polaris RZR 900 and 1000 Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs). These fires have caused death, serious injury, and property damage. - The 2017 RZRs were not included in the April 2016 recall, but these models have also experienced fires. - The CPSC and Polaris continue to work together to ensure fire risks in these vehicles are addressed. However, at this time, the CPSC and Polaris want to make the public aware of the fires involving these vehicles. - The CPSC advises consumers to report any fire or overheating-related incidents at: www.SaferProducts.gov or the CPSC Hotline at 1-800-638-2772.
April 14, 2018 My Polaris RZR S900 engine overheated, spilt coolant into driver and passenger compartment, nearly caught fire and spewed out smoke during a different ride on [REDACTED]. The consumer states that his ATV was sitting in his garage when it caught fire and burnt everything inside it. Additional damages included to his barn; it melted the siding on the back of his house; it melted half of his wife’s car, and his car behind hers also had damages; part of his trailer still need repairs. In total, there were damages of 250,000$.
The consumer contacted the Polaris dealership he purchase his unit from and explained the situation however no assistance was provided.
The inspector said they are not sure where the fire started but was most likely due to the ATV since it was the only thing in the consumer’s garage that could catch fire. The ATV only had twenty-seven miles on it. The consumer indicates he updated his ATV with additional features, and that he is still paying for it however only has seven-thousand dollars to finish paying it. The ATV was taken to a junk yard and sold for scraps.

I have purchased 2 Polaris 2016 450HO last year. My wife and I have been burned on numerous occasions from heat emitting from the right side of the quads. Both do the same thing. It’s absolutely unbearable in the summer time. If you ride the quad for more than a few minutes and happen to hit some water(which happens quit frequent off road) it will send burning steam out the right side opening. Without hitting any water you cannot place your leg resteling in the foot well properly without being burned by the hot plastic or the heat emmiting from the right side. Happens every time we ride them in the summer.

Purchased a brand new 2007 Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI 2 up Deluxe 4x4 atv back in 2007. We still own this atv. The problem started approximately 2-3 years ago. Our engine started getting very hot. We had to replace an electrical wiring part located on top of the engine under the seat due to these wires melting. Than the right side panel brackets melted and the right side panel gets extremely hot. We came across a recall notice for newer year Sportsman models that were having similar issues. We strongly believe that the 2007 Sportsman models should be included with this “overheating “ recall issue. We believe that this is a similar safety concern as owners of a 2007 Polaris Sportsman. Thank you.

2016 Polaris Sportsman X2 EPS was being driven in responsible fashion for under 1 hour, in accordance with all instructions given by owner’s manual, on non-challenging trail and lawn terrain, in cool ambient temperatures, while wearing protective clothing recommended by manual. Rider sustained second degree burn to right calf due to proximity to unshielded powertrain components. Reported incident to manufacturer, requesting fix to make unit safe to operate. Manufacturer admitted not having design specs for expected temperatures adjacent to human skin, insisted I was isolated incident, refused to investigate or attempt any fix that could remove burn hazard. In discussion with large online forum for Polaris Sportsman owners, it quickly became apparent that excessive heat and burns are a widespread issue with 2015-2016 570 class Sportsman ATVs, not the “you are the only person in the world with a problem” claim put forward to by Polaris head office.

While riding the ATV trails in [REDACTED] the brakes on my ATV failed forcing me to jump off of the machine. The rear brake assembly where it attaches to the axle disassembled causing the brakes to completely fail. I believe the brake cables are an inch too short which keeps the adjusters too close to the end of the cable and with the pressure of using the brake puts too much pressure on the adjuster causing it to fail. I had the brakes adjusted shortly after my purchase as the brakes were not performing correctly. I think this problem with the brakes, if not addressed by Polaris could cause imminent physical harm and possible death via an accident.

The product, in the report: 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 4x4
While riding Polaris Sportsman 500 down a steep descent, the machine suddenly experienced total brake failure. This ATV is equipped with both a hand actuated brake which operates both front and rear brakes along with a foot actuated brake that operates rear brakes. This machine was well maintained and both systems were checked and fully functional before vehicle was operated. This machine is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS due to several design flaws including:
1- The machine has an automatic (CVT) transmission that does not have engine brakes and cannot be shifted or slowed by utilizing the engine or transmission; i.e. the brakes are the only way to stop or even slow this machine.
2- A single point of failure resulted in complete brake loss. The hand brake has a completely separate brake fluid reservoir from the foot brake and both have separate hydraulic lines feeding the brakes. However due to design flaws in this system, a single failure resulted in both the hand and foot brakes failing at the same time.
3- ATVs are designed to be ridden off-road in varied and sometimes steep terrain. The design of this vehicle does not include any system redundancy to prevent catastrophic brake failure. The failure of a single component resulted in an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS situation and complete inability to stop or even slow a 500 lb.+ ATV.
The design flaws inherent in this machine nearly cost me my life. I hope this information prevents this machine costing others their own.

It had only 3 miles on it when I began riding it on 090915. I was stopped and was standing behind it and noticed the left rear tail lens was melted in the center. Upon returning to home I telephoned the polaris service department at Sun. I took it to the dealer and they looked at it. They told me they would have to order a lens and would call me when it came in. I am still waiting for the part. Meanwhile I found many instances of tail lights melting on this particular manufactured ATV on line. This is a serious problem in my mind.

The product, in the report: Red 2006 Polaris Hawkeye 300 (2x4 model)
In the end of March of last year... 2014, I was riding my newly aquired/bought 2006 Polaris Hawkeye 2x4.
Near the end of our day I was coming back to the trailer to load up when my atv automatically throttled up on its own... causing me to swirve, hit several mud ruts. I immediately turned the handlebars to avoid crashing into huge rocks when felt a hard drop and a sound of something snapping behind me.
Only seconds afterwards I was thrown... off the Polaris Hawkeye... and slammed to the ground onto large rocks. After a few minutes of shock... I felt dizzy and nausea... then a extreme pain in my leg. I attempted to get up but was I dire pain and unable to. Being prior military I’d instructed my wife and friends to get the ramps for the atv... force slide it under me and loaded me into the back of our Envoy... where I rode to the emergency room at Community Hospital.
After several xrays and an hour later the doctor told my wife and I I had to go into immediate surgery. I had a Sub Capita break of the ball of my hip from the force of fall off my atv.
SEVERAL months later... in October last year I was able to move around and work agin close to normal. My wife and I are by no means rich so I wanted to fix my atv... to one day go riding again... hoping that this was just a “freak” accident. I saw my Polaris Hawkeye had actually broke off at the sub frame in the rear and the left tire was leaning majorly. The lower arm was hanging semi loose and the cv joints were busted. I called several friends, who ride religiously and told them the problem, and had some inspect it.They all concurred that...”that is not right... it shouldn’t just BREAK like that unless it faulty”.
I couldn’t afford to have it professionally fixed... so my brother in law and I welded it up extremely strong and tough. I’ve called Polaris 3 times about this... and each time was told there’s nothing wrong with their machine... it had to be “user fault”. However...after several hours of research, I’ve found literally over a hundred complaints on forums. Both for the “automatically throttling by itself” andthe “Faulty Sub Frame”. Yet Polaris fails to acknowledge ANY of it. Hopefully this complaint will result in something positive so that nobody else should have to suffer the pain, agony, and consistent problems I’m going thru because of Polaris’ negligence.
Thank You for your time and concern. Respectfully and Sincerely Submitted, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 2014 Polaris 570 Sportsman 4 Wheeler(ATV)
I am the owner of a 2014 Polaris 570 Sportsman ATV which on 2 occasions(6/14/14) and (9/6/14) caught fire and melted the seat. Other electrical and mechanical components of the unit were melted and damaged during the second fire. On both occasions the unit was being driven by my son at 3-4 miles per hour.Polaris replaced the seat after the first incident, but did not make any other repairs. After 6 weeks in the dealer’s shop the unit was released to me and I was advised it was safe to drive..We were not given any information about the cause of the first fire nor were we advised to take any precautions in operating the unit. After the second fire we contacted Polaris and were advised to take it to a dealer of our choice. It has been at that dealers for 7 weeks and to date no repairs have been made. I have contacted a number of Polaris dealers, talked to several 570 owners and done a great deal of research on the Internet. Polaris has had a substantial number of problems with this unit overheating and melting seats and other mechanical problems. There have also been a number of reports of gasoline in the fuel tank “boiling” to such an extent that gas or gas fumes have apparently been forced out of the fuel tank vent tube and migrating into the instrument cluster and/or light assembly. Since there are no other flammable materials on the unit I believe gas leaked or was forced out of the fuel tank and was ignited by the exhaust or an electrical spark. Polaris has not given us any hint of the cause of either fire nor have they given our dealer any instructions on testing for the cause of the fire or repairing our unit. The dealer who has the unit in his shop is very reluctant to free lance on repairs. We need a resolution and a recall may force Polaris to pay more attention to the problem.

I own a 2014 Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV with power steering. I have about 10 hours on the machine and about 70 miles. Within the first couple hours of riding I noticed that the seat was no longer aligning properly while riding. I thought it was odd but kept on riding. After the day I riding I did some reading on the Polaris ATV online forums and read of the excessive heat and melting seat problems. I removed the seat and notices the platic seat bottom was severely melted. The nest time I went on a four hour ride and again while riding the seat was misaligned and I could feel the incredible heat the machines engine was prodcing. Throughout the day I was unaware the my leg was actually burning on my right side ankle due to the amount of heat. I didn’t realize the leg burning until the end of the day once we got back to the house and I removed my socks to get ready for bed. I had heat and burn blisters on my ankle. I am a paraplegic and in a wheelchair and I can’t feel my legs fom the knees down therefore I never knew I was getting burnt. At this point after spending all my money on my new ATV I am afraid to ride it and get burnt again and I am afraid the seat may even catch on fire.

The consumer stated that his 5’8 tall, 150pounds wife was driving the ATV on asphalt at approximately 2 miles/hr turning the vehicle to park it .When his wife was climbing out of the vehicle, the atv accelerated by itself to approximately 30 miles/hr or more. The force caused by the vehicle threw the consumer’s wife to the ground. She fell backwards towards the left side of her body and landed hitting the left side of her head, hip and left elbow. The consumer’s wife had a bruise in her hip and head, and scratches in her elbow. The atv continued riding by itself , running over several canoppies and toolboxes. Then the ATV crashed against a go-cart like vehicle called a quarter midget and was catapulted to the air in circles near the edge of a cliff over the quarter midget. The ATV continued “flipping” in the air while falling down the cliff. Once down in the cliff, the consumer noticed that the ATV’s engine was still powered on but had crashed against a fence and was positioned upside down. The consumer reached for the keys and turned off the ignition. The consumer discontinued the use of the product.

The product, in the report: Polaris XP 550 4X4 ATV
My wife and I were out traveling on dirt roads through the Eldorado National Forest on Aug. 17 2013 when I started to here a clunking sound from the front end of the Polaris 550 . { We had just purchased the quad a few weeks before and already have had the quad out on a previous trip a week before without any problems. When I bought the quad I noticed that the quad had a few A arm bushings that were [worn] and needed to be replaced but were not bad enough to be replaced as of yet.) When I heard the sound I thought that maybe it was a bushing starting to make noise. Is we got closer to our staging point back at the truck when the noise started getting louder and louder. We made it to the truck OK and loaded the quads on the trailer. The first chance I got I inspected the front end for a bad bushing but found out instead that it was the front left hand Ball joint had completely come loose from the steering knuckle and almost came apart which if it would have happened on the trail would have left me injured, stranded or dead. I found out about the Recall {alert #1 Q-713) and contacted the Polaris dealer they did research and found that the recall had already been done to this quad. I took the quad to the Polaris dealer and they contacted Polaris to see if they would replace it again and the said NO. This is a part that should NEVER come apart period. End of Story It looks like there fix was not a fix but a Band-Aid and someone is going to get injured, stranded or killed if this part isn’t made so it will never come apart. Lucky I did not crash.
We purchased a Polaris Sportsman XP 550 quad from a private party with 1100 miles on it several weeks ago. When we bought the quad I noticed that it had a few A arm bushings that were [worn] but not bad enough to be replaced as of yet. Also, the clutch wouldn’t kick in until 2500 rpm which would make the quad lunge on takeoff. On our first trip we had no problems with the steering or the front end.
To learn more about the Polaris Sportsman XP 550, I went to the Polaris Forum on the Internet. According to the contributors, the clutch is that way new from the factory and someone figured out a fix for it. Also I read a lot of complaints of bushings wearing out in 200 miles or so. It seems that from what I have read that Polaris doesn’t have original replacement parts that will last so all the people give advice on what to do and where to get aftermarket parts that are better. I wish I had seen this before I bought this quad. Always learning something the hard way, I guess.
My wife and I were out traveling on our quads on dirt roads through the Eldorado National Forest on August 17, 2013 when I started to here a clunking sound from the front end of the Polaris XP 550 I was riding. When I heard the sound I thought that maybe it was a bushing starting to make noise. As we got closer to our staging point, the noise started getting louder and louder and maybe sounding like a shock absorber getting loose. We made it to the truck okay and loaded the quads on the trailer. The first chance I got I inspected the front end for a bad bushing but found out instead that it was the front left hand Ball joint stem that had completely come loose from the steering knuckle, and almost came apart. Had this happened while riding on the trail, I would have been injured or died.
Polaris had a Recall of the concerned parts on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (alert #10-713) so I contacted my local Polaris dealer, Placerville Polaris. They did a research and found that the recall repair work had already been done to this quad. [REDACTED] at the Placerville Polaris talked with me and we decided for me to call Polaris at customer Contact. They in turn told me that the work had already been done and they were not going to have it fixed again. They said that I could to take the quad to the Placerville Polaris so they could call their Polaris Rep because they didn’t have the authority to make the call. So I called [REDACTED] at Placerville Polaris and he asked me to bring the quad down for an inspection and to take pictures to develop a case. When I got there, they gave me a cost estimate of $90.00. The report I got from Placerville Polaris was that the recalled part had FAILED AGAIN and that they spoke to [REDACTED], a Polaris representative (Case # C-2779857-P9B2R7) who denied payment of a repeat repair. This ended up costing me $67.50.
The Service Manager at Placerville Polaris seemed to think that the previous owner didn’t have proper maintenance services done to the quad and that was to fault. He said that the part moves and wears and should have maintenance.
My thought is that the Ball Joint moves but the ball joint stem where it is connected into the Steering knuckle should not, and that is where the problem lies.
I have three 2007 [REDACTED]and one 2007 [REDACTED]. All trouble - free and the Suzuki’s have a total of approximately 12000 miles all together. My Yamaha and Suzuki’s ball joints are put together like a car with the ball joint stem being a threaded bolt with a castle nut with a cotter pin holding into the steering knuckle that will never come apart. The Polaris has it mounted like a battery cable to a battery. The stem of the ball joint is just pinched in place by the steering knuckle with 1 bolt, and if it pulls loose you’re in trouble. Have you ever had a battery cable come loose on your battery? Yes. And it doesn’t have an A –ARM yanking back and forth on it either.
There is no excuse. This is a part that should NEVER COME APART, PERIOD! End of story. It is a portion of the part that when put together should never move, wear or need any maintenance whatsoever, no more than the ball joints ends on your car.
It looks like Polaris’s engineers fix was just a brain fart and not a fix at all. And if not recalled and changed someone is going to get injured or killed if this part isn’t made so it will never come apart.
BUT THE PEOPLE AT POLARIS DO NOT SEEM TO CARE. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 2004.5 Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV
I own a 2004.5 Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV. I recently experienced an incident where the ECM (Electronic Control Module) spontaneously caught fire, with no warning and really for no reason. This is an issue well known to Polaris, as they previously issued a recall of “certain” 2004.5 and 2005 Sportsman 500 models (as indicated on your website). However, I was told by Polaris that my particular VIN number did not fall under the impacted list of vehicles. This is the reason for my report today...I do not believe that Polaris has successfully captured all impacted vehicles as a part of their previous recall. The ECM in my ATV is the EXACT same ECM that was in the ATV’s that were included in that recall. To be clear, I am not seeking retribution from Polaris because of this issue, but rather want to call attention to the fact that they have missed vehicles in their previous recall. This is a significant problem...had I not been present when this ECM caught fire (and immediately disconnected the battery from the ATV), my entire ATV could have surely been a total loss, with potential for damage to my garage, home, etc. Polaris truly needs to re-evaluate the vehicles that they’ve included in their original recall...my ATV is proof that they have missed vehicles with the faulty ECM.
If you need vin number or any other additional deatils on my ATV for further investigation, please just let me know. More than happy to help in any way I can.

The product, in the report: 2006 Polaris Hawkeye 300 4X4 All Terrain Vehicle Camo edition.
The lower a-frame mounts on my 2006 Polaris Hawkeye ATV separated from the frame while riding on a dirt road causing the other mounts to break. This created an unsafe riding situation as the right rear suspension collapsed while riding causing a loss of control. This also caused the axle shaft to separate. The lower a- arm twisted when the front mount ripped out of the thin frame rail. This caused the upper a-arm to twist and break the mount where it is attached to the transmission. This is un-repairable and the entire transmission must be replaced to re-mount the upper a-arm. The ATV had to be towed out of the trail system as it was unridable.

He sustained severe bruising to his right shin was severely dazed and has been suffering with a very stiff neck.Luckilly he was wearing all of his safety equipment or his injuries would have been much worse, he has still not fully recovered. Upon fixing atv I noticed that the original carrier was much thiner the the new one. I took the atv directly back to the dealer, they are contacting polaris. Is there any thing else that I should do?

The product, in the report: ATV - 2010 Polaris Sportsman XP 850 EPS model
Polaris Sportsman XP 850 ATV suspension failure as described in Alert # 10-713.
While riding the ATV on the Oregon Dunes, the left front upper A-Arm suddenly separated from the spindle knuckle causing loss of control and damage to the front suspension components. Fortunately, the speed at the time was approximately 15 mph and no injury resulted.
The ATV had to be towed and transported to the local dealer, Florence Yamaha-Polaris. The dealer advised that the repair should be covered as the failure was the direct subject of the safety alert #10-713. The Polaris factory repeatedly declined to pay for any of the damage or for any of the repairs required, and thus did not stand behind the faulty parts.
This ATV was previously inspected by a dealer in California during approximately February or March of 2010 due to the safety alert and no parts were changed at that time. It is assumed that the Polaris factory noted this inspection was previously done per the recall by the VIN # and this may be the basis for the denial.

The product, in the report: silver and black 2004 Polaris Sportsman 700 twin EFI 4x4 ATV
I purchased my 2004 Polaris sportsman 700 twin EFI brand new in september 2004, one year later I had a fuel leak, the fuel line was rubbing on the frame and wore a hole in the gas line, I called the dealer and they said just to put a metal inline fuel filter where it was rubbing on the rubber hose, I did and that solved that problem. Next about two years after purchase I was out hunting and my fuel gauge started to flicker and then disappeared, my atv then started to spit and sputter then died on me. I sat on the hill for 20 minutes and then tried to start the atv and it started, that was the start of a long 5 years with this machine. it would run fine than it would act like it was starving for fuel then it would die on me, Id pull off the gas cap and the fuel acted like it was boiling. it done this for 5 years, i took it to the repair shop and they said that I needed a new fuel pump and fuel regulator assembly $500-$600 they replaced it and said that the ECM (Computer) was heating up extremely bad I have searched on the internet for fix solutions for my atv and Ive seen hundreds of posts reading that they have experienced the same problems with their 2004 Polaris sportsman 700 twin EFI atv. and some of those experiencing these problems happened weeks to only a few months after purchase. My wife was riding our 2004 Polaris sportsman 700 twin EFI up a hill and it started to spit and sputter and died on her while she was climbing the hill on a forest service approved trail. when the atv died on her she started rolling backwards and the atv turned sideways going down hill it didnt roll onto her, she was able to jump off but the atv tipped on its side. My wife could have been seriously injured or worse because of this fuel pump/ECM problem that not only me but hundreds maybe even thousands of people have experienced the same exact thing. Ive sent Polaris industries some messages and Ive never gotten a response back from them on this issue I love my machine its paid for and I cant even sell because if the issues it has because Id hate for someone else to get hurt because of it I paid almost $9500 for this 2004 Polaris sportsman 700 twin EFI and the problems arrised after the warranty expired so now im stuck with a potential death trap that I want to go out and enjoy once again.
