The product, in the report: ATV
Purchased John Deere Gator model 550 in 2014, a 2013 demo model had about 14 hours on it. Had the vehicle serviced at one year after purchase (2015) at the John Deere dealer. In early 2016 we had several problems with brake not working and not holding the vehicle on even slight hill. Took to a local mechanic to check it and look at the brakes. He said the brake cable was significantly damaged and needed to be replaced. He replaced the brake cable with John Deere part. In mid 2017 the brake was not holding all the time, would take several attempts pushing the brake to get it in Brake mode, with engine on or off, then this month 7/2016, the brake would not hold on slight upgrade in yard. We again took the the Cookeville, TN John Deere dealer for routine service (7/26/2018) and to check the brake. The mechanic said to brake cable broke when he was removing it before he replaced it with a new cable. When we spoke with the service dept manager we asked about the brake cable failing, that I considered this a major safety issue and definitely a possible recall issue. He said “we have had a few complaints about this issue from a few other customers” but that was all he said. We live an area and use the Gator on large, steep hills for manure spreading and trail maintenance in our equine development, which has steep hills and ravines. After we got home I checked on the CPSC and found there have been numerous complaints about this same issue. To me THIS IS a major safety issue. In the past we have been on a narrow trail, on the very edge of a cliff, we got stuck, and if the brake had failed at that point the Gator would have gone over the side, down a rock edge about 100 feet to a river.
