No incident, no one hurt Made Oct 3, 2026, sent to the company Oct 7, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 22, 2026
The product, in the report: Rear brake system of my ATV: Can-Am BRP Outlander 850 Model/Part No.: 00004ETA00 Serial/VIN: [REDACTED] Purchase Date: August 21, 2026 Selling Dealer: Ridezilla Carson City, Nevada
On August 21, 2026, I purchased a new 2026 Can-Am BRP Outlander 850 ATV, VIN [REDACTED], from Ridezilla Carson City, Nevada.
On September 30, 2026, while operating the ATV on dirt roads in rural Nevada, I experienced a sudden and catastrophic rear braking-system failure.
While traveling downhill on a dirt road, the foot brake suddenly stopped functioning without warning. The brake pedal traveled completely to its factory stop, but application of the pedal produced no noticeable braking effect or reduction in vehicle speed. The hand brake remained functional and allowed me to stop the ATV.
I stopped and visually inspected the ATV for brake-fluid leakage or other obvious problems but observed no leak or visible failure at that time. After confirming that the hand brake remained functional, I cautiously resumed riding. Shortly afterward, the foot brake unexpectedly began functioning again and once more had pedal pressure and braking effect.
Later, while applying the foot brake to stop at the top of a dirt road, I heard a loud pop from the rear brake area. At essentially the same time, I observed flames shooting through the right rear wheel area.
I moved the ATV into the center of the dirt road and away from surrounding vegetation. The flames extinguished. Upon inspection, I observed that the factory-crimped rear brake-line connection at the rear caliper had separated and brake fluid had been discharged from the connection. Flames had occurred in the same rear brake and wheel area.
The hand brake remained functional, allowing me to return the ATV to camp without use of the rear foot brake.
There was no warning displayed on the ATV before the failure. There was no brake warning, check-engine light, or other indication of an impending braking-system problem.
This incident involved both a complete temporary loss of braking through the foot brake and a subsequent physical separation of a rear brake-line connection accompanied by fire. The fire occurred in dry rural terrain and presented a potential brush-fire hazard.

No one hurt Made Apr 16, 2026, sent to the company Apr 21, 2026, published by CPSC May 5, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a 2024 Can-Am Outlander Pro XU HD7 all terrain vehicle ATV. It is a utility style ATV designed for off road trail riding and general utility work on rough and mountainous terrain. It is greenish in color. The vehicle identification number is [REDACTED].
1. What happened that made you want to report? I am reporting a serious safety defect on my 2024 Can-Am Outlander Pro XU HD7 ATV. The vehicle has repeated intermittent failures that include sudden and complete loss of power steering while underway and under power, stalling while moving, automatic switching from 4-wheel drive to 2-wheel drive while moving, hard starting after stalling, and loss of USB charging. These problems return shortly after dealer service visits despite multiple repairs including an ECM update and battery cable tightening. I have completely lost confidence in the machines safety and no longer feel it is safe to operate. 2. What type of product(s) were being used? 2024 Can-Am Outlander Pro XU HD7 all-terrain vehicle ATV, VIN [REDACTED]. 3. Who was using the product(s)? I the owner was operating the ATV. 4. How were the product(s) being used? The ATV was being used for general utility and trail riding on my mountainous rural property. 5. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? No actual injuries have occurred yet but a serious injury or fatality was narrowly avoided and remains a clear risk. 6. How did any injuries occur? While making a downhill turn under power the ATV suddenly lost all steering assist and continued going straight instead of turning. I was able to strongly apply the brakes in time to stop before going over a 30-40 foot embankment lined with trees. Had the steering failure occurred at higher speed or on a sharper turn the ATV would have gone over the edge or flipped which could have caused serious injury or death.

The product, in the report: 2017 Can-Am Outlander 450 ATV by BRP
4 wheel studs broke due to over torque as per incorrect information in owners manual. BRP admits to this in service bulletin ATV2020-4 dated Nov. 2019 for Outlander models 2013 through2019. My2017 manual calls for 74 ft lbs, the service bulletin corrects it to 59+/- 4 ft lbs. So all of my wheel studs have been over torqued numerous times due to this bad info and have resulted in failures of 4 at this time. I have to assume all 12 others are now suspect and must be replaced. BRP has not contacted me as to this SB and I only found out by researching forums on the internet to find this is a common problem. This could be catastrophic if they were to fail at high speed. I feel this should be a safety recall item as it could kill someone.

The product, in the report: BRP Can-am ATV 2017 with 19 hours on it.
I went outside to my shed and unlocked it. I then walked around checking over my ATV to make sure everything looked good and in working order and all clear. I then started up my ATV and backed it out of the shed, parked it on the driveway and let it warm up. After the ATV warmed up I put it in gear and slowly drove it around my house then when I was coming around for the second time I all of a sudden could smell something. I parked the ATV in the driveway and leaned in toward the front of the ATV to see if I could see where the smell was coming from, as I did that the ATV just burst into a huge flame. A huge flame coming out of the front and top of the ATV. I jumped off the ATV and ran inside to get my fire extinguisher as I was doing that I told my fiance’ to call the fire department. I then ran back outside (this is about 10 yards from the ATV) an proceeded to use the fire extinguisher to try and put the fire out. I used the entire thing and I thought it was out and was just smoking now but as I put the fire extinguisher down cause it was empty, it went wooosh back up in flames. I then ran to the hose and turned it on full blast to try and put the fire out again. As I was doing this the fire department arrived and took over to put the ATV out which took awhile.

The product, in the report: ATV
2012 Can-Am 800 Max, Heat is melting fuel tank.
Heat from the exhaust, in particular the muffler has caused the fuel tank which is plastic to melt. This melting produce has occurred overtime and gradually melted it to the extent that is now leaks fuel, causing an extreme fire hazard. Had the fuel ignited during my last outing on the ATV it would have no doubt injured myself and caused a forest fire.
There is a heat shield between the muffler and the fuel tank, however this isn’t enough protection to ensure the tank doesn’t melt. There needs to be added protection (Helix Barrier) to the fuel tank to ensure the plastic doesn’t melt.

The product, in the report: 2013 Can-am Outlander 650 XMR
I was trail riding my 2013 Can-am Outlander 650 XMR on the “Soo line” coming from Moose Lake Minnesota. It’s a old rail road bed that has been turned into a strait and maintained ATV trail laid with rocks and dirt. I was trail riding with a buddy of mine and we were heading back to my cabin further down the “Soo line”. Me and my buddy were cruising at the same speeds as everyone else on the “Soo line”, which is about 45-50 MPH (even though my Outlander 650 is capable of speeds over 70 MPH factory), when a deer popped out and stopped in the middle of the trail. I then locked up all my brakes to avoid hitting the deer, which I did manage to avoid. In the time I hit my brakes my rear brakes failed, shooting my rear pads out the back of ATV. At that point my rear end started to come out from behind me and I thought I was going sideways and going to crash but I was able to let off the brakes right away because the deer moved out of the way. This allowed me to regain control before going too far sideways and crashing. After that scare, and lose of my rear brakes, I limped back to my cabin safely and went home. I started digging into the ATV to see what all had happened and from what I could see the rear brake system was destroyed. The pad material ripped off the pads and was bent up. The rotor was bent really bad and one of two caliper piston’s was bent and no longer operational. The caliper slides were bent and no longer operational and the swing arm mounts for the rear brake system was bent and could not be straightened. The whole swing arm that my suspension, wheel, and connection to the main frame all come together. I knew that I was dealing with a manufacturer structural defect so I called Can-am. Long story sort, after numerous calls and providing them with the facts and the opportunity to correct it, they made it clear that it’s not their problem and to have my third party warranty take care of it. So I called my warranty they told me it’s a brake issue and it’s not covered, even after I explained how it’s a structural defect. I have done research and found others that had similar problems on similar Can-am ATV’s and that they were told by the manufacturer that its not their problem. I went further yet to find out that Can-am or BRP has had similar issues in the past six years with brake and structural problems. One was recalled on the 2010 Can-am Spyder for complete brake system failure. Another with one of the Can-am Outlander twin machines, the Can-am renegade, that had rear brake failures to the point they redesigned the rear brakes making it a dual rear brake system instead of a single brake on the rear drive shaft. The Can-am Renegade shares many things with the Can-am Outlander like frame, suspension, power and powertrain, but the Can-am Outlander is heavier and has bigger wheels which creates more force on the brakes. Yet they didn’t carry over the new dual rear brake system on the Can-am Outlander. The last issue I found that they had was the G1 frame on all of the Can-am ATV’s. These failed under normal use to the point that in 2013 Can-am switched all the frames except the Outlander 400cc over to the newer stronger G2 frame. This frame has the same provisions to accept the dual rear brake system as the Can-am renegade, that was kept even after the frame change, and I still have not seen this safety issue fixed on the Can-am Outlanders. Bottom line... this could have injured or killed me and others I have talked to that have the same safety issue. Can-am needs to take action either through a forced recall or free will for fear of someone getting injured or worse.

The product, in the report: 2011 500 XT ATV
This caller is reporting his ATV four wheeler after three incidents of his power steering has gone out on three separate occasions. The first incident around September 24, 2015 on the caller’s property when the caller was riding at approximately 15 mph and almost hit a fence when the steering went out. He contacted the manufacturer who advised him to take it to the closest dealer that was 100 miles from the caller’s residence at [REDACTED]. The manufacturer advised the caller to have this dealer perform a diagnostic test on the ATV. The diagnostic test showed that the steering tripped due to an overcurrent in the electrical system. The dealer reset the electrical system, drove it then returned it to the caller. The second incident was September 29, 2015 on his friends ranch in Three Rivers, Texas when the caller was riding at approximately 9 mph after which the caller contacted the dealer who had reset the electrical system. The dealer checked the ATV again then aligned the front wheels, reset it again, drove it then returned it to the caller again. October 1st, 2015 the caller was riding again on his property at around 20 mph when the power steering went out on the caller after only five miles of riding causing the caller to almost go into a ditch. The caller as of this date has not been injured and states that he has no intention of riding this ATV at this time. The caller states that there is a total of just over 50 miles on the ATV and is asking that this ATV become recalled. His model is recalled with release# 12-709 but only in the red and yellow colors. The manufacturer has advised him that his Cammo color is not recalled. He is asking that his Cammo color be added to the recall and that a complete repair be extended to him at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: 2007 ATV
The consumer says that when he first purchased the ATV he noticed a lot of electrical problems. He says the dash constantly blinked on and off and also an EMC error code would appear. The dealer told him the electrical system was not strong enough. The dealer replaced the stator, which is an electrical regulator. This did little to resolve his issues.
He then called the manufacturer for assistance, they referred back to the dealer. After six months of going back and forth he was told by both parties that it was the best they can do. Last weekend he had an electrical fire and the entire unit was burned to the ground. He was driving down the road when the dash blinked on and off.
The ATV stopped running on its own as it has done before. He walked away for five minutes, and came back to see his ATV on fire from the back portion. The ATV burned to the ground in ten minutes, burning the aluminum to liquid.
He then contacted manufacturer yesterday who in turn went back to the dealer and is waiting to fill out an incident report. The dealer has record of his several complaints and visits over the years. There is also a complaint on file with the manufacturer from 2008.

What recourse do I have? Who should I contact about this? Have you heard of this being a problem with other Can Am ATV’s? Otherwise it’s a great machine and am very happy with it.

The product, in the report: Four wheeler with potentially dangerous cracking frames
I recently purchased a Can Am (made by BRP) 2012, Ountlander 1000XT four wheeler. The cost of the machine was around $13,000 US dollars. Right after the purchase, I discovered over on one of the social network sites there was a post in regards to micro-cracks taking place on the new first year “Gen2” frames. At first, BRP completely denied this, referring only to the internet as being a great place for people to start rumors. Later on, they did admit to a handful of cracked frames and professes that the owners had abused them. When I took my machine in for its’ 10 hour maintenance check, I asked my dealer to check it for the cracked frame. They knew nothing about the claim. I showed them the site I had been visiting, which includes numerous detailed pictures of the issue. They later stated they had spoken to BRP and checked my frame. They stated that I currently did not have the cracks. Now - it seems that BRP has come out with a brace, that is applied to the frame for extra stability. It also seems that the rapidly approaching 2013 models, same frame, will have these braces installed at the factory as a standard part of the frame. What about us folks that have the 2012 frames - with potential cracking issues. It seems that they can crack at any moment, under any circumstances ??? Please see this for complete details http://www.can-amforum.com/forums/can-am-2012-models/35563-2012-can-am-outlander-renegade-gen2-frame-cracking-pictures-posted.html

I purchased a 2012 can am outlander 1000xt for $13100 W/ extended warranty, 6months ago and since then my brakes went out at 400 miles and now with just under 600 miles my pitman arm bent w/o impact which dramatically affects steering and the incident occured just on a swerve and BRP is not covering anything however on the brake issue they did goodwill the parts which I still had to pay almost $200 labor, on the pitman arm and brakes there has been multiple incidents reported on the same thing happening some impact related some not. However my bike is currently at the dealer and they have stressed no sign of impact, no bike damage of any sort! I just think the public should be aware of such incidents because I feel they are a manufacture flaw and the company is not standing behind their product. Please be aware of these issues which could endanger lives at the cost of an engineering flaw. Also MULTIPLE claims of GEN2 frames cracking PLEASE BE AWARE!!!
