The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

Made Jan 9, 2024, sent to the company Jan 11, 2024, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2024

The product, in the report: Schwinn 430 Elliptical

While exercising normally on a Schwinn 430 Elliptical, the bolt that runs through the lower right handle bar broke in half, separating the handle bar from the pedal. Fortunately, I caught myself and did not fall to the ground. Incident very similar to one reported by another person, for the same product: [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Schwinn IC4 spin bike

A Schwinn spin-bake pedal sheared off, mid-spin. There was no outside visible indications of an issue. My wife only luckily missed breaking multiple bones as her foot went to the floor, pulling her body weight downward as well.

I was riding my Schwinn 170 upright bike under normal circumstances on February 15, 2022. The metal crank snapped off while riding normally. Fortunately I was not injured, but it was not out of the possibility.

  5. No one hurt

Made Jun 1, 2018, sent to the company Aug 3, 2018, published by CPSC Aug 17, 2018

The product, in the report: SCHWINN 430 Elliptical

On March 2, 2107 I purchased a SCHWINN 430 ELLIPTICAL , serial # 100326 PRO 1700552, for $585.04 thru Amazon, manufactured by Nautilus of Vancouver WA.

Less than one month later while working out, in a catastrophic failure, the bolt that runs through the lower left handle bar sheered, separating the handle bar from the pedal, and throwing me to the ground. I contacted Nautilus and provided photographs of the failure. They sent a replacement lower left handlebar. I replaced the part, but was unable to use the machine for two weeks awaiting delivery.

On June 9, 2017, while working out, THE SAME BOLT sheered again, with the same results. This time Nautilus insisted that a hired technician make the replacement. It took five weeks for the technician to arrive and make the replacement.

Today, on June 1, 2018, THE SAME BOLT sheered for a third time, sending me to the ground. I again contracted Nautilus and the following customer service representative: [REDACTED] | NLS Support Person, Nautilus, Inc. | Global Headquarters, 17750 SE 6th Way, Vancouver, WA 98683 Phone/Fax: 800 605 3369 | Email:[REDACTED]@nautilus.com He indicated I am being sent a replacement part and has asked that I make a video and send it to Nautilus so their “engineers can study the problem.” The problem is that the same part has broken three times. I am well under the weight threshold and only USE THE MACHINE IN MID-RANGE SETTINGS. It is on a level floor in a climate controlled area of my home.

I AM EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS AND DANGEROUS FLAW. Although I have not been injured, another consumer may not be so fortunate: THIS FLAW MUST BE FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT. The simple use of a stainless steel bolt would fix the issue

  6. No one hurt

Made Dec 24, 2013, sent to the company Feb 3, 2014, published by CPSC Feb 19, 2014

The product, in the report: Recumbent bike

My wife was exercising on the Schwinn 205P recumbent bike when the weld on the seat that connects the seat-back metal brace and the seat-base metal brace separated. The separation caused the seat-back to forcibly swing back and down to the horizontal position. My wife was not injured, but could have been if the bike had been positioned closer to a wall or window. I believe that if she had hit the back of her head on a window still a sever injury could have occurred.

What is interesting is that I have been looking for a replacement part, and have noticed that replacement seats have an addition metal cross brace where the seat-back and seat-base braces come together.

The product, in the report: Exercise Bike

The caller stated that the seat tube of the exercise bike fractured in its entirety at a point of 3 inches above the bracket tube. The weld of the rectangular bar size is (approximate 1/8 or 1 1/2 inches) supporting the bottom bracket fractured in its entirety. He weighs approxinately 190 pounds, so weight was not a factor. This abrupt failure of these component parts of the exercise bike frame caused the bottom bracket tube to shift from it intended fix position which in turn caused the user’s foot to uncontrollably slip from the pedal striking his ankle forcibly against the bike frame. The ankle contusion was not as grave as the real possibility of a serious laceration from the exposed broken seat tube or serious injury from a fall caused by the seat tube. 5/29/12 The manufacturer was contacted and he was advised that they were unable to honor the warranty since they had no proof of purchase. The caller feels that due to the design of the exercise bike it had the tendency to fail.
