Emergency room Made Apr 17, 2025, sent to the company Apr 22, 2025, published by CPSC May 6, 2025
The product, in the report: Rep fitness Rep x Pepin adjustable dumbbell. All black with silver handle. total weight ranges from 85lbs to 125lbs depending on the package the customer purchases. it has two 2.5lbs adder weight at the two ends of each handle. and has 10lbs increment weight plates totaling 125lbs at the end of each dumbbell
I purchased an Rep X Pepin adjustable dumbbell directly from Rep Fitness website. I received the dumbbell around January 3 and on January 4th after using the dumbbell for the first time one of the pins that locks in a 2.5 pound adder weight failed to lock and slid out and struct me in the head. I was injured but I did not seek medical attention. I then messaged rep fitness directly to notify them of the problem and they sent me a replacement ( another 2.5 pound adder weight). the replacement they sent me is the exact same design. I requested rep fitness to put out a public safety announcement for other to beware because the pin that hold the adder weight doesn’t have any color or obvious indicator to notify the user if the adder weight is indeed fully locked or not. after using the dumbbell again after receiving the replacement I discovered another defect in the rep x Pepin dumbbell. the second defect is the pin that locks the slider that prevent upto 120lbs of weight from falling out while in use, can become unlocked by users who have big hands or knuckles. This happens when users are using the dumbbell the knuckle can brush up on the pin causing the lock to be disengaged. this can cause the 10lbs weight plates to fall directly down on to users head or other body part. I notified rep fitness again on January 15th of 2025 to notify them of the second defect. and the [REDACTED] The Director of Sales and Support responded personally telling me they would do further testing and possibly updating their disclaimer. no recall or public safety announcement was made. I had to modify the second pin(weight selector pin) myself in order to use the dumbbell safely. On I took it upon myself to make [REDACTED] post and [REDACTED] video to notify the public of the safety concerns regarding these dumbbell to which I was ridiculed and slandered by many users and suffered emotional distress and humiliation. On January 29 2025 I messaged rep fitness again forwarding all the safety concerns video I made regarding these dumbbell to which [REDACTED] assured me that all my video and conversation will be sent to the engineering team to examine. still no public service announcement or recall has been made. On march 22nd 2025 suffered another head injury due to the adder weight failing to lock again. this time the adder weight struck me right below the eye and I suffered a more serious injury. I was taken to the hospital to which I was diagnosed with a head injury and had a ct scan and was notified I had concussion like symptom. I notified rep fitness again on march 22 2025 and request they put out a public to which they still did not. they reached back out to me in April 3 2025 to notify me that they are investigating the situation and yesterday they still did not make any public announcement warnings. they said they will give me a follow up to which as of April 16 they have not updated me nor have they sent out any public announcement or warning. I have now been injured twice by these dumbells and I have shown rep fitness two separate dangerous defect to every pins that secure all of 120lbs on this dumbbell. i repeat there is only two pins on this dumbbells and their only purpose is to lock in the 120lbs of weight plates and both pins show dangerous defect that can severely hurt the users.
