The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: New Balance 1800 Treadmill

I have a New Balance 1800 treadmill that was purchased at Dick’s Sporting Goods February 2006. I am the original owner and the only operator of this treadmill. In March 2011, I was on this treadmill at my residence. The treadmill suddenly sped up to full speed on its own. I was thrown off the treadmill, hit my head and the tread burnt my legs and arm. I had pulled the emergency cord that is supposed to immediately stop the treadmill but the treadmill did not stop. My husband got me off the treadmill and it faulted off. I have contacted Fitness Quest, who is now “responsible” for New Balance treadmills, multiple times. They claim that it is the motor control board, that they no longer manufacture, so the treadmill is non-repairable. We had a past incident with this treadmill which will be described below, where we were told that the problem was the motor control board. However, replacing the motor control board did not solve the problem and the technician left a new motor control board with us. So, we replaced this supposedly broken motor control board with the one we had, and the treadmill still will not operate. I told this to Fitness Quest but they continued to claim that there is nothing they can do for us. The treadmill is 5 years old, purchased from Dick’s Sporting goods and has been repaired at least 5 times in it’s lifespan. Prior incidents were just as dangerous (treadmill would suddenly stop when I changed the speed, would skip or just suddenly turn off) but I was fortunate to not experience injuries prior to this one. The treadmill no longer runs. The emergency switch not operating and these sudden large changes of speed and/or suddenly shutting off could cause very serious injuries. I was fortunate that I had people to help me off the treadmill as the emergency shut-off failed. The refusal of Fitness Quest to look further into this incident and/or fix the problem is suspicious. I have the contact emails and the repair receipts for this treadmill. I do not want someone else to experience the same or worse injury due to this defective product.
