Emergency room Made Jul 16, 2020, sent to the company Jul 24, 2020, published by CPSC Aug 7, 2020
The product, in the report: Exercise Bike, DMASUN Indoor Cycling Bike Stationary, Comfortable Seat Cushion, Multi - grips Handlebar, Heavy Flywheel Upgraded Version (Black) Model Model # 8732
My daughter was cut by the pedals on a stationary exercise bike that unexpectedly had an sharp unfinished metal edge. Note that this is a stationary bike where you sit and pedal, the bike was not moving and she did not fall or tip over, the pedal just slipped off her foot. She was using the bike and simply slipped off the pedal, which caused it to scrape against her shin. Normally this would cause a minor scrape/scratch and maybe a small bruise. Since the pedal had an unfinished edge which looks like it was not smoothed on one side after it was stamped/cut, the metal edge was very sharp. She had a large irregular shaped portion of skin sliced off her shin down to the fatty tissue underneath. There was too much skin removed to be able to stitch it shut, an area roughly 1” by 1” had no skin at all, with a 2” long deep cut coming out of one side. She went to urgent care and has had I believe 5 appointments since then with a plastic surgeon. She was in a lot of pain and had a hard time walking or doing other activities for almost 2 weeks. Nearly a month later, the skin still hasn’t fully scabbed over and the plastic surgeon expects another month or so of initial recovery plus more to deal with the scarring and any subsequent procedures that will be necessary. The seller admitted the pedals were not properly finished, but it is unclear whether the defect was with all pedals or just ours. I want to make sure that other users are notified and other people do not use the unsafe pedals. It is not that the pedals are metal, or have bumps, it is that one edge of the metal is knife-like because it was not finished properly during manufacturing.
