  1. Emergency room

Made Apr 3, 2018, sent to the company Apr 11, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 25, 2018

The product, in the report: Apex inversioin chair used to hang upside down and decompress the spine

am a Canadian citizen and purchased an Apex inversion chair in Canada that was distributed by an American company called Impex fitness. I had an incident with the chair when it unsuspectedly rolled over backwards and pinned me upside down and unconscious. Fortunately, I was able escape with my life and some non-life threating injuries (torn rotator cuff muscles, Brachial Plexus injury, cervical disk complications). This accident happened in Jan 2016 and in the following weeks I notified the company through their web site where I gave a description of the accident, my name and contact information. I also advised them to have this product re-called. I never heard back from this company so I carried on with life and put my focus toward a full recovery. In approximately sept 2017 I experienced a big loss of strength on my left side upper body (arm shoulder and back). I had an MRI performed (the 2nd since the accident) and it revealed nerve compression on the Brachial Plexus roots, caused from Posterior disc osteophyte complex a complication from the initial accident. On Sept 27, 2017 I decided to report this Apex inversion chair to a Canadian Government web site to raise awareness of this dangerous product. Case Number [REDACTED] Consumer Product Safety Officer, Regulatory Operations and Regions Branch Health Canada / Government of Canada [REDACTED] / Tel: 416-973-4312 / Fax: 416-973-1746

Since this time I have been contacted by a representative of the Canadian Tire Corporation, the company from which I purchased the Inversion chair and they had told me I would be hearing from Impex fitness the company that distributes this line of fitness Equipment. [REDACTED] from Impex fitness e-mailed Jan 3 2018 asking me when it would be a good time to talk about my accident. I responded to the email and we eventually talked. I have since talked with [REDACTED] 2 times and have asked what they are going to do about re-calling this product or warning the public. I also sent her an email asking to do the right thing and report this product. She did not respond to my email which I sent on March 23 2018. All she did was assure me that Impex fitness does not make this product anymore during our phone calls. So this leads me to believe they don’t want to deal with the ramifications of a recall or the bad publicity this could create for their marketing of fitness products.
