The product, in the report: Tribord Easybreath Full Face Snorkeling Mask

I experienced an emergency while snorkeling with a full-face Tribord mask a couple of years ago. I had snorkeled with the mask each day for several days before so it took me by surprise. I was having a great time with the mask because it never fogged, I could see so clearly all around and it was a beautiful day. This day I was on Kahekili beach on Maui floating just over the reef. I had been out for longer than normal because the conditions were so good and with that mask, it’s easier to stay out longer because there are fewer issues with the mask or snorkel than with the 2-piece systems.

I realized I should head back to shore so I signaled my husband and we were gradually headed back that way when all of a sudden I realized that I had been relaxed and had forgotten to breathe. So reflexively, I took a deep gasp which then suctioned the mask to my face I tried to signal my husband I was in trouble, began puling on the mask but I couldn’t get it off due to the suction and without having my feet down yet, it was hard to get a good stance to really pull with my arms. I did get it off. I believe I pushed out whatever air I had left and peeled it off thankfully just as I started to black out. Just barely in time without a moment to spare.

I have never been more scared. It was very similar to sleep apnea experiences I have had when I woke up gasping, only this time, it was like I was gasping with a plastic bag stuck to my face. I have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) so when I am really relaxed my narrow airway can close. I was really relaxed in the mask and I am wondering if my airway closed and the nature of the full face mask prevented me from re-opening my airway. I am grateful I was able to get the mask off and get back to the beach.

I absolutely love the mask, but I am beginning to suspect that with OSA I need to be mindful of clear breathing techniques and regular breaks if I am to use it. I think that is the benefit of a traditional snorkel. You can never forget what you are doing, you are breathing through your mouth deliberately, and it encourages you to focus more on your breathing technique. The traditional mask fogs, leaks water, forces you to take breaks and that is probably a very good thing.

It happened August 23, 2016 when I was 44 years old and in good health. I am an OK swimmer and comfortable in the water.
