As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Oct 4, 2021, sent to the company Oct 7, 2021, published by CPSC Oct 29, 2021

The product, in the report: CAP barbell 115lb Cast Iron Hex Dumbbell (black)

On 6/13/21, I purchased exercise equipment from CAP barbell in Houston, TX (specifically 115lb dumbbells). I had been using these dumbbells for about 3 months, and was doing dumbbell presses (laying down on a bench where the weight is pressed from the chest and arms extended directly in front of the face). After completing the exercise, I went to pick the dumbbell off of the floor, and handle snapped off in my hand; it was not rough, there was almost no resistance, like snapping a twig (see attached photos). If the dumbbell had broken while I was exercising, I could have been seriously injured, disfigured, or even killed (over 50lbs falling directly onto the face). As it was, I was lucky and was not injured at all. I sent my inquiry to CAP barbell advising them about a defective piece of equipment. There response was “...this happens when a dumbbell has been dropped even if from only a small distance.” They also maintained that “this applies to all dumbbells industry wide” which is absolutely not true. I am reasonably cautious with exercise equipment and have had several sets of dumbbells (some for over 10 years) that I have handled the same way as these and are in fine working condition. This is a hazard and someone could be seriously hurt. I am not asking the CPSC to help me obtain remuneration in this matter, simply hoping that something can be done about safety. CAP barbell is knowingly making and distributing a product that can cause serious injury (is absolutely aware of it) and takes no responsibility. I assure you this is NOT the industry standard, and that any reputable company producing exercise equipment should take into account the safety of their customers.

The product, in the report: Weight lifting Barbell

Purchased a CAP BARBELL WEIGHT BENCH SET ON 3/26/16 On 8/22/16 while I was lifting 80lbs on the bar, one of the pins used to hold the bar together fell out! I had to carefully and slowly lower the bar with the weights onto the floor to avoid the 80lbs toppling onto my feet.

This use of these metal pins to secure this bar together is not stable and is defective. This should have never happened and someone is going to get seriously hurt if use of this bar is continued to be manurfactured as such.

I have contacted CAP BARBELL and they refuse to even look into it.

The product, in the report: Weight Bench with Weight Set of 100 Lbs

I purchased CAP BARBELL Weight Bench Combo with 100 lbs of weight from Walmart. The Model No is: FMS-CS100P. Serial No is : ZJHS2015/08. There were few parts defective and the customer service sent replacements. The following part numbers are for assembly of the weight bar which can hold 100 (One Hundred) pounds and the replacements were defective too. The manual says not to use the product if the pins do not go all the way in or are loose. First time, the pins were loose. 2nd time, one pin went in and one did not. This is the very last step in the assembly and I do not have time to disassemble the whole product and return it back. 1) PFMS80-34 : Roll Pin , Qty 2 2) PFMS80WA-19 : Inner Bar , Qty 1 3) PFMS80WA-18 : Outer Bar , Qty 1

The customer service refuses to send any more replacements or correct the situation.

The weight bar should be a solid bar since this is a safety hazard to have a joined rod without proper design.

I urge you to ask CAP BARBELL to recall their weight bar from this set and replace with solid bars to avoid any injuries and assembly hassles.

The product, in the report: CAP Barbell Olympic-size Advanced Weight Bench

Purchased CAP Barbell Olympic-size advanced weight bench in January 2015. There is a bar which supports the adjustable bench and the weight of the user and the weights they are lifting. The manual states the maximum weight tolerance is 500 lbs (weight of user + weights being lifted). Just noticed on 8/27/15 that this bar is now bent after normal use (never exceeded 430 lbs in combined weight). This is a very dangerous situation because if this bar was to bend further or collapse during weight lifting (bench pressing) it could cause the weight to come crashing down on the user resulting in serious injury or death.

The product, in the report: CAP Barbell set with 2 of each of the following weights: 5-lb, 10-lb, 15-lb, 20-lb and 25-lb. Rack also came with set.

I purchased the CAP Barbell Solid Hex Dubbell Set with Rack (Model SDGS-150R) from Amazon.com. The product arrived in several boxes that were not strong enough to handle the weight of the bells. One box had been taped up as box had torn, one 25-lb bell tore through the box when I lifted it, and one box arrived empty as the 20-lb bells had tore through. The [REDACTED] driver checked his truck and could not locate the bells. I contacted Amazon.com to let them know of the safety issue. They said they would get this corrected from the vendor, CAP Barbell. However, upon going through older customer reviews, there are complaints of torn packaging sent to Amazon.com dating back to February 2013.
