No incident, no one hurt Made Apr 16, 2026, sent to the company Apr 21, 2026, published by CPSC May 5, 2026
The product, in the report: Results Series 1090 SelectTech Dumbbells - Dimensions (Per Dumbbell) 17.5” L x 9.5” W x 10” H (44.4 x 24.2 x 25.3 cm) Results Series 552 SelectTech Dumbbells - 16.9” L x 8.3” W x 9” H (43 x 21.2 x 22.8 cm)
1. What happened that made you want to report? I purchased the Bowflex 552 and 1090 “Results Series” dumbbells in February 2026. This model was marketed as a reconstructed, sturdier version of the dumbbells that were subject to a massive CPSC recall in June 2025 (Recall #25-311) due to weight plates falling off. However, the units I received exhibit the exact same mechanical instability. The adjustable weights wobble significantly on the handle and never feel “secure” or locked in place. The locking mechanism appears to be defective, making the equipment unsafe for exercise.
2. What type of product(s) were being used? Bowflex 552 and 1090 Results Series Adjustable Dumbbells.
3. Who was using the product(s)? 35-year-old female
4. How were the product(s) being used? I attempted to use the dumbbells for standard strength training. During the initial inspection and “dry run” of the movements (bicep curls and overhead presses), I noticed the plates were rattling and wobbling. I immediately stopped use because the plates did not feel anchored to the handle.
5. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? No physical injuries occurred because I identified the defect before a full workout. However, a severe “near-miss” injury may have happened. If the plates had dislodged during an overhead movement, as they did in the 111 reported injuries from the previous 2025 recall, the weight plates could have fallen directly onto my head or chest.
6. How did any injuries occur? N/A (No injury occurred). However, the potential for injury is an impact hazard caused by the weight plates unexpectedly detaching from the handle during use due to a faulty locking mechanism.

No incident, no one hurt Made Mar 31, 2026, sent to the company Apr 3, 2026, published by CPSC Apr 24, 2026
The product, in the report: Bowflex SelectTech 1090 adjustable dumbbells used for home strength training. The product is a pair of adjustable dumbbells with weight plates that lock into the handle assembly and are selected by changing the weight setting. One clip/locking component failed on one dumbbell after about 12 months of normal use. The dumbbells were still otherwise usable at the time I contacted Bowflex.
I purchased Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells for $539.99. About 12 months after purchase, one clip failed.
I contacted Bowflex only to ask whether I could buy a replacement part so I could continue using the dumbbells.
Instead, I was told the dumbbells were under recall, that Bowflex could not repair or replace the part, and that I had to submit a recall claim.
I provided serial numbers and was instructed to return the dumbbells. Before shipment, Bowflex did not disclose that the remedy would be limited to a $20 prorated voucher.
Only after Bowflex received and disposed of the dumbbells did I learn the remedy was only $20.
Had I known that beforehand, I would not have returned them because they were still usable.
I later contacted Bowflex at least eight times, but the responses repeated general recall and bankruptcy language and did not address my concern about the lack of remedy disclosure before return.

No one hurt Made Oct 31, 2025, sent to the company Nov 18, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 3, 2025
The product, in the report: Product Description: Product Name: BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells (552 / 1090 models) Model Numbers: 552 (52.5 lb max), 1090 (90 lb max) Color: Black Components: Each dumbbell includes a handle, a set of weight plates, and a base for storage and adjustment Dimensions: Handles approximately 12 inches in length; bases roughly 15 inches wide x 12 inches deep; weight plates vary depending on model Purpose / Intended Use: Home strength training; the dumbbells are adjustable to provide a range of weights for various exercises including bicep curls, shoulder presses, and other resistance training Additional Info: we bought the pair
1. What happened that made you want to report? I purchased BowFlex 552/1090 adjustable dumbbells prior to April 23, 2024, from Nautilus, Inc. These dumbbells were later recalled due to a safety defect where weight plates could dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard. I participated in the recall as instructed, sending in the handle and base of my dumbbells, but was only offered a $20 prorated voucher. Additionally, BowFlex is not returning the handle/base that I sent, despite the low value of the compensation. I believe this remedy is unfair and does not reflect the actual purchase price or the potential hazard associated with the product.
2. What type of product(s) were being used? BowFlex 552/1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, sold in black, including handles, weight plates, and base.
3. Who was using the product(s)? I, the purchaser, and adult household members intended to use the dumbbells for personal strength training.
4. How were the product(s) being used? The dumbbells were being used as intended for weightlifting exercises in a home gym setting. The handles and bases were installed and used according to manufacturer instructions.
5. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? No injuries occurred while using the product but one of the weights of the dumbbell fell off resulting in me dropping the dumbbell to remove my foot from that area to avoid injury. They stated that because I then threw away that dumbbell it wasn’t covered. However, the recall indicates that weight plates could dislodge, which posed a significant risk of injury during use. I was able to send in the other dumbbell for the recall.
6. How did any injuries occur? No injuries occurred. The risk was due to the possibility of weight plates detaching from the dumbbell handle while lifting, which could have caused blunt force impact injuries to the user or nearby individuals.
Additional Notes:
I returned the handles and base per recall instructions but am concerned about the extremely low compensation ($20) for a product that originally cost much more.
I would like the consumer protection agency to review this matter as it may constitute inadequate or misleading remedy practices for recalled products.

No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 22, 2025, sent to the company Aug 27, 2025, published by CPSC Sep 11, 2025
The product, in the report: Bowflex 552 adjustable dumbells
I am writing to formally express my concern and dissatisfaction with the way Johnson Health Tech Trading, the current owner of Bowflex, is handling the recall of the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells (models 552 and 1090). I own a pair of Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells affected by this recall. I experienced a mechanical issue (screw loosened from nut and fell out) that could have led to serious injury, which prompted me to search for supportonly to discover there is an official recall due to weights dislodging unexpectedly during use, causing a serious impact hazard. The recall acknowledges over 350 incidents and 100+ injuries, including concussions and broken bones. This is clearly not an isolated problem. However, the remedy being offered to consumers is wholly inadequate and arguably unethical: - The company is offering only a prorated credit toward a future Bowflex purchase, not a full or even partial cash refund. - The credit is based on how long the consumer has owned the product, which penalizes those who have used it longer even though the defect existed the entire time. - There is no option for a cash refund, even though the product has been officially deemed unsafe for continued use. Customers are being required to return the product in exchange for a credit, meaning we are left without functioning dumbbells and forced to buy again from the same company that sold us defective equipment in the first place. This response feels more like a brand loyalty scheme than a legitimate safety remedy. It fails to make consumers whole and shifts the burden of the defect entirely onto us. A proper recall should provide an actual refund or a safe and equal-value replacement. I respectfully ask that the CPSC re-examine this recall and pressure Johnson Health Tech Trading to offer a fair and customer-centric solution including a cash refund option, regardless of purchase date. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope your office will act in defense of consumer safety and fairness.

No one hurt Made Aug 6, 2025, sent to the company Aug 11, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 25, 2025
The product, in the report: Brand Name: Bowflex Product Type: Dumbbells Model: SelectTech 552 Purchase Date: 11/24/2023 Retailer: Bowflex
I purchased a set of Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells, and one of them became stuck to the base due to a mechanical issue that I later discovered was part of a known recall. I reported this issue to Bowflex before the recall and was told I would have to pay out of pocket for repairs.
Now that the item is officially recalled for this exact defect, I am trying to complete a return per their instructions, but the defective product cannot be disassembled due to the same failure point identified in the recall. I have reached out multiple times over the last several weeks and have not received a resolution. I believe this violates fair consumer practices and poses a potential injury risk.
I am filing this report due to lack of response and accountability from the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: 2 separate dumbbells that sit/rest on a gray base. The dumbbells itself contain a dial on each end ranging to set the weight plates from 52.5 lbs all the way down to 5 lbs which is just the handle weighing that amount. There is a rubberized grip in the center to pick up comfortably. The length is approximately 16 inches and 8 inches tall with the highest weight plates .
Received a recall notice from Johnson Health Tech Trading in regards to my Bowflex 552 adjustable dumbbell set. Im reporting that I am a current owner of this particular dumbbell and have experienced the plates dropping out of the handle from time to time posing a risk for injury. I have replaced these weights by purchasing from [REDACTED] but continue to experience its defect as noted in the letter.

Emergency room Made Feb 4, 2025, sent to the company Feb 7, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 24, 2025
The product, in the report: Bowflex 1090 adjustable dumbbell
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Report Date: [Insert Submission Date] Submitted by: [REDACTED] Address: [REDACTED] Email: [REDACTED] Phone: [REDACTED]
Incident Report: Equipment Failure and Injury Due to BowFlex SelecTech 1090 Dumbbells 1. What happened that made you want to report? On December 4, 2024, I was using a pair of BowFlex SelecTech 1090 dumbbells in my home gym when a serious equipment failure resulted in an injury. While performing an overhead press with the dumbbells set to 50 pounds, a 15-pound weight plate detached mid-lift from the dumbbell in my left hand. The plate struck me on the head, triggering a severe medical episode and leading to emergency medical intervention.
2. What type of product(s) were being used? The product involved in the incident was a BowFlex SelecTech 1090 adjustable dumbbell, a piece of home fitness equipment designed for weightlifting and strength training.
3. Who was using the product(s)? I, [REDACTED], was the sole user of the dumbbells at the time of the incident.
4. How were the product(s) being used? I was using the dumbbells as intended for strength training exercises. Specifically, I was performing an overhead press, a standard exercise where the dumbbells are lifted from shoulder height to an overhead position.
5. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Yes, the failure of the dumbbell resulted in a significant injury. When the weight plate detached mid-lift, it struck me on the head, triggering a severe neurological episode due to a pre-existing condition called Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS). This condition, when triggered, can lead to stroke or aneurysm. I experienced immediate incapacitation and required emergency medical attention.
6. How did any injuries occur? The injury occurred as a direct result of the dumbbells structural failure. Upon later inspection, I discovered that the cause of the failure was a cracked plastic bracket that secures the largest weight plate in place. This plastic component appears to be a critical structural piece of the dumbbell, and its failure led to the unintended release of the weight plate. The impact of the plate hitting my head caused a medical crisis, requiring emergency transport to a trauma center and treatment with medication. Since the incident, I have been experiencing intense and frequent migraines and am at an increased risk of future RCVS episodes. I have upcoming neurology appointments for further evaluation, including an MRI to assess potential blood vessel damage in my brain.
Additional Details and Concerns The dumbbells were used correctly and never dropped or mishandled. The failure was due to a structural weakness in the plastic bracket, a material that seems inadequate for securing heavy weight plates. Photographic and video evidence of the damage to the dumbbell is available. This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of this product, as a similar failure could result in severe head trauma, concussions, or worse injuries for other users. Requested Actions I am submitting this report to formally notify the CPSC of this dangerous defect. I urge the commission to investigate the safety of this product and consider whether action should be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Please confirm receipt of this report and let me know if additional details are needed.
Sincerely, [REDACTED] Email: [REDACTED] Phone: [REDACTED]

Bowflex SelectTech 1090 weights have broken handles that allow the weight plates to fall out. They can fall out on feet and faces, depending on how the weights are being held. They were recalled for this reason in 2012, but it is still happening.

The product, in the report: Bowflex 1090 are adjustable dumbbells have weights that adjust from 10 to 90 lbs in 5 lb. increments, by turning a dial on each side of the dumbbell handle. There are plastic encased metal discs, which are designed to secure the weights to the handle.
I have a set of Bowflex 1090 dumbells, where the weights keep falling off. This has occurred multiple times, but it was not until today that I discovered the reason. It is because of a poor design. Luckily, no injuries occurred, but, had the roughly 20 pound weight had fallen on my face, it could have caused severe injury.

The product, in the report: Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell; ranges from 10-90 lb.
I’ve been using the Bowflex 1090 adjustable dumbbells for almost six years. Yesterday, during my workout. the heaviest weight increment on one of the dumbbells broke free from the handle and fell to the floor mid-exercise, narrowly missing my foot. I have never dropped or slammed the weights, and I ensure each side of the dumbbell is firmly clicked in and the weights are secure before lifting them out of the bases. I contacted Bowflex support and the representative walked me through troubleshooting steps where it was determined the handle is defective and needs to be replaced. I called Bowflex support the following business day to get a replacement handle and after getting the supervisor involved, they are shipping a replacement handle at no cost. I don’t believe I should have had to argue with the company to get a free replacement for a defective product that nearly caused severe bodily injury to myself, regardless of the warranty period. I read countless reviews online of other individuals who have experienced the same defect with weights falling from the handle, causing broken noses, broken toes, black eyes, etc. I have lost all faith in Bowflex adjustable dumbbells and will no longer be using this product.

The product, in the report: Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells. Black with red numbering and accents. Each dumbbell weighs between 10-90 lbs, depending on the setting of the dial.
I purchased a set of Bowflex Selecttech 1090 dumbbells that have been lightly used for maybe 10 workouts total. During my workout yesterday, the heaviest plate (50 lbs) detached from the handle while I was doing a bench press and grazed my face, causing pain and some swelling. Upon inspection, the plastic (yes, they used plastic) disc that is supposed to latch onto the plate shows signs of cracking and fatigue, and shifts around 1mm. Two other discs show signs of fatigue as well. These dumbbells have never been dropped and are stored in the cradle provided.
If they had failed slightly further in my movement the injury could have been serious and broken my nose, caused and orbital fracture, or worse. Plates detaching from these dumbbells should *not* be an acceptable failure mode. I see that they already went through a recall in 2012 but apparently didn’t make the necessary design changes to improve safety. A quick read of 1 star [REDACTED] reviews confirms that the issue isn’t an isolated one.

The product, in the report: Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell (by Bowflex/Nautilus). The product is a dumbbell with 5 plates on each side and a weight selection dial on each end to allow you to select the weight (from 10lbs-90lbs) you would like to use. The product is mostly black with red numbering on the weight selection dials.
I was using the BowFlex SelecTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell (by Nautilus), performing overhead shoulder presses. As I completed the exercise and was bringing the dumbell down to re-rack it, the largest weight plate (15lbs) fell off and landed on my foot. The malfunction resulted in the break of my second metatarsal bone in my left foot.
In doing some research, it appears that the product was recalled in 2011 for this specific problem. I purchased the product in August of 2014 via Amazon. It is obvious the recall did not fix the inherent design flaw.
The product design is flawed as the weight plates are ‘secured’ to the dumbbell bar via a small plastic lip that relies on tension and gravity to keep it from falling off. If the manufacture used a modified design that actually hooked the plate to the bar, the plate would never have fallen off.
This product should be recalled IMMEDIATELY to prevent others from being injured. It should NOT be allow back on the market until the manufacturer changes the design of its securing mechanism to eliminate the possibility of plates falling off of the bar.

The product, in the report: Bowflex® SelectTech® 1090 Dumbbells. Adjustible dumbbells.
I bought these bow flex dumbbells 1090 in 2012. Since then two of the heavier 15 pound plates have fallen out creating a safety hazard when the plastic tab that holds the weights into the handles broke. The safety recall on these that we caught the handles did not fix this problem with the weights. Since then I have re-ordered one of the weights and it is obvious they have changed the design and now have a metal tab riveted in to the plate.

The product, in the report: Bowflex selecttech 1090 dumbbells
I purchased a Nautilus/Bowflex serial number 001-4551mag15490035. The dumbells are extremely dangerous -- when I lift them off the stand one of the 10lb plates falls off onto the floor and misses my foot by inches. A plate can fall off when dumbell is overhead as well. I called bowflex, they troubleshooted and said I need a few new parts. However, they wont honor my warranty without a sales receipt. There is no mention of requiring a sales receipt for warranty anywhere before purchase is made. I have the serial number but cant find the sales receipt now, and they refuse to take the serial number for warranty coverage. I sent the warranty paperwork to Bowflex over a year ago but they said they don’t have it. Additionally, if you go to their website at https://www.bowflex.com/customer-service/manuals.html you will see a link to the warranty information next to selecttech 1090 dumbbells but the website throws an error. This is all a very serious issue as someone can get seriously hurt, and they refuse to honor their warranty to fix the issue. Please investigate -- this is a very serious equipment defect so no injuries occur due to their negligence. If you need anymore information please let me know.

The product, in the report: Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells. Black weights with red numbers ranging from 10 to 90.
I was performing lateral dumbbell raises when plates fell off of the dumbbells. This has also happened when performing dumbbell curls and other exercises periodically over the past few months. The dumbbells have never been dropped. No injuries we’re sustained as I have been able to dodge the falling plates when this occurs. Customer support has suggested periodically checking the alignment, but this does not prevent the issue for more than a couple weeks at a time.

The product, in the report: The name is Bowflex 1090. This product is two adjustable Dumbbells that can reach maximized weights of 90lbs on each dumbbell. Very heavy and not very reliable. The core of the product is too weak to support that kind of weight resulting in injuries and damages
I picked up the weights and I started lifting 60 lbs on each arm and my little bro was video taping me as I curl these weights. About half way through my set a weight on my right hand dumbbell drops on the floor and bounces on to my little brothers foot.

The product, in the report: Bowflex 1090 dumbbells
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am calling in regards to the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells recall and to inform this agency as well as the company that this product has another defect. It is even more dangerous than the weights giving out as you are removing them from the cradle. I have had two mishaps now with two separate units. I am in the process of returning the second unit.
What I am referring to is the plates that hold the weights in place, more specifically the plate that holds the heaviest of weights. The weight through normal use puts too much strain on the plate and it fails. The reason why I say this defect is more dangerous is because the plate fails and allows the weight to give lose as you are in the process of using it, making the impact of the weight more severe and coming closer to body parts than a person just removing it from the cradle.
I have had two close calls from the first unit before I realized the plate had a fracture in it. I called Nautilus. Unfortunately, I did not have a receipt and had to pay full price for a replacement unit. The second time around, I again had a close call as the weight came within inches of my foot. I will call Nautilus again to report this incident and attempt to get a replacement or a different product.
Again, the defect is in the thinness of the plate holding the biggest weight. The metal material used is not strong enough to safely contain the large weight. I have only had the dumbbells less than a year and use them an average of once a week. I have always been careful not to drop them or handle them roughly. I am very concerned about this development and hope Nautilus will address this other defect that I believe is truly a defect.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
