The product, in the report: Sportman’s Grill Model: GR4039-014943

    I purchased a Sportsman’s Grill Model: GR4039-014943 at Sam’s Club (#6649) in Worcester MA on April 5, 2012

I have used it a total of less than 7 hours.

After pre-heating the grill for a small roast in early June 2012, I lifted the top and it detached and fell to the ground. The grill temperature at this time was about 500 deg F.

Upon examination after cooling, I found that the rivets (they look to be aluminum) that hold the backplate to the body had melted and broken. Most of the grill is very well made with stainless steel bolts and nuts except for a total of 12 aluminum rivets -- 4 that fasten the top cover to the grill and 8 others that secure the clip fasteners. Upon further examination, it appears these rivets are also deteriorating -- one appears to have partially melted

I wrote to both Sam’s Club and the manufacturer: Rankam VDG Industries Ltd and advised them of the potential safety hazard without response -- they thought I was interested in product replacement and I am not. I would not want another grill with key supporting fasteners made of material that deteriorates in early use at normal grill operating temperatures. I have since replaced the aluminum rivets with stainless steel bolts/screws at a total cost of $3.40 so it isn’t an expensive repair.
