The product, in the report: Stainless Steel 3 burner Propane Grill
I have a gas grill--here are the Specifications Manufacturer: North American Outdoors (HK) Limited purchased at Target Purchase Date: about 3-4 years ago, but did not use until about two years ago--remained in box SN: 079681 Model #: BB10769A
On September 4, 2011 I lit the grill (all three burners), preheated it, and put all burners on “Low”. I placed six large chicken quarters on the grill and left it for 20 minutes. When I returned, I noted a small amount smoke and assumed the grease from the chicken skin had caught fire. When I reached the grill, I noted the temperature gauge was pinned at at the end of the scale--the scale stopped at 800 degrees F. My first impression was that I had left it on high, but the knobs were all on low.
I opened the grill and the chicken was charred, and an aluminum serving plate that I was preheating had melted and curled over the edge of the upper warming rack (I checked later and it appears aluminum melts at about 1250 degrees). I tried to turn off the grill, but the first knob spun freely--apparently melted. I reached to turn off the gas at the tank, but heat too intense. I then got a rag to use as a hotpad and turned off the tank. There was no evidence of a grease fire when I opened the grill, but each of the three burners was burning brightly.
The only explanation I have is that the pressure regulator of the grill failed, causing the extreme overheating. Had I not intervened I feel sure there would have been a fire and/or explosion. I received two second degree burns to my right hand, each about 1/2 inch in diameter. Actually I feel very lucky and blessed that no worse injuries were sustained.
The grill has always been stored indoors.
