The product, in the report: Propane Smoker built by Masterbuilt. Model MPS 230S
This documents serves to capture an incident that occurred on Saturday, April 4th in 2020 with a Propane smoker from Masterbuilt. The product I was using was the MPS 230S Propane Smoker. On the evening of April 4th, at approximately 6:30 PM MT, the brisket and pork butt I was smoking was taken off the smoker and into the house to rest the meat. When I came back outside to close the smoker down, I re-opened the area of the smoker body where the meats are cooked. Just as I was moving to close the door to to shut off the gas to extinguish the flame, the “Water Tray”, which was filled with drippings from the meat that was just cooked, apparently sloshed slightly. This cause some drippings to fall down onto the flame directly below, which was covered only with the Wood tray, which also is made to burn wood during the process. This ignited and send a larger flame and caught the entire “Water Tray” on fire, which erupted into a very large flame and enveloped my entire face. I threw myself back away from the flame swatting to put it out and try to keep it from my face. The grill, which was positioned 9 feet behind me and was not on at the time, broke my fall. My wife, [REDACTED], was in the kitchen at the time and saw the eruption of flame and immediately came outside to see what was happening. The entire smoker was instantly on fire. My reaction next is probably what saved the entire situation from getting completely out of hand. I moved toward the tank and shut the valve to stop the flow of propane gas. I, then, removed the line and took the tank away from the smoker while the smoker was still fully engulfed. My wife helped me get the entire flame out from the smoker after we took both the wood tray and grease pan out of the smoker completely. We put a large pan lid from our kitchen on both trays in order to extinguish the flames, as we knew grease fires cannot be put out with water. So, I know we did the absolute right things to get the situation under control. Next, because she is a medical professional, she took me upstairs to look at the burns closely. In her professional opinion, and because of the Covid-19 illness that was rampant during this time, she put some burn gel (aloe) over the areas that appeared affected, specifically the nose, cheeks and lips. She applied it very liberally to help slow the burn process. Since it was so late on a Saturday night, she thought it would be best to avoid the visit to the ER(again, because of Covid), unless symptoms got significantly worse. So, we agreed we would monitor the burns carefully. All went well, and when Monday morning approached, I called my doctor as soon as the office opened and got an appointment for that afternoon. My doctor agreed it was a really good call to not visit the ER and that everything [REDACTED] did worked wonders and prevented further damage to my face. My doctor, then, prescribed some better face cream(Silver Sulfadiazine) with antibiotic and soothing properties to intensify the healing process. In the week I have been taking the cream it has improved the appearance significantly. I am still in some pain from it, but it has come a long way, so far, and I hope the healing continues for it. While my physical appearance has healed, there are lingering feelings on my nose and lips that I was told may take more than a year to fully heal, so time will tell on those. My analysis of the product is that it is seriously flawed in 2 critical areas. First, the “Water Tray” is not deep enough to hold enough of the drippings that fall into it during the cooking process. Second, there is nothing to prevent or divert any drippings from the tray from reaching the flame below and causing it to ignite into such a monstrous fireball. My situation is one that is only able to be shared because of how I reacted at the moment the flame erupted. And, because I have more than 20 years of smoking experience, I was more prepared than most people would have been in this situation. My exposure to the flame would have been significantly different with a much more catastrophic end result had I not reacted as fast as I did. I truly don’t want another person to have to endure the trauma this incident has caused me. And, again, my nose and lips will continue to heal, I hope, so I will eventually be fine from this incident. I am still very outraged at this incident and wish to have it resolved as soon as possible. The company, Masterbuilt, has not offered an acceptable agreement on it, and they seem to be more concerned about my signing a form agreeing not to sue them. They offered to replace it with a similar product to the cost of what I paid, excluding tax. But, the features on the product they offered are the same, so I fear it could potentially happen again. I have, since, purchased a new propane smoker from a different company, which is much safer and has a much larger “Water Tray” and has shields the trays below to deflect anything that may potentially fall toward the direction of the flame. I have disposed of the old smoker, so it is no longer in my possession. The old one was unusable because of the amount of damage it suffered in the fire to the inside walls. I would like this product investigated for the safety benefit, and I wish to have them pay me a reasonable amount for the suffering I’ve endured from using the product and trying to reason with them with no success.

Masterbuilt MB20030519 MPG 300S Tabletop Gas Grill, Stainless Steel - This items, recently purchased through Amazon, delivered on 16 September 2019, first used on 27 October 2019. Propane fuel line, which connects at the bottom (front) of grill, caught on fire about two minutes after the grill was ignited. Fire began where the fitting (connector) fits to the line, To be clear, propane was leaking where the connector is attached to the line, not where the connector attaches to the grill. Luckily the fire was promptly detected and extinguished before further damage. Front of grill damaged, knobs melted.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jun 24, 2019, sent to the company Jul 15, 2019, published by CPSC Jul 29, 2019
The product, in the report: A propane Smoker grill, purchased at Home Depot on 05/04/2018 and used about 6 times. Stored as directed with an official Masterbuilt cover.
On Saturday 6/2/ 2019 I was setting up my smoker. I heated it up to brush the grates before putting food in. When I turned around the entire this was ablaze The heat melted the bottom of the grill and burned through the propane line. My first thought was to turn off the grill at the knob. However, the cheap plastic knob melted off leaving only a red hot stem Had I not had the sense to kill the propane I could have easily blown up the house. This is a MAJOR DESIGN DEFECT . This is extremely DANGEROUS
I contacted Masterbuilt who attempted to blame me for the issue. A quick scan of the internet shows that other consumers have had the EXACT same issue. The cheap flooring buckles in the heat exposing the propane line to direct flame.
The smoker is currently in my garage available for inspection. Masterbuilt declined to look at it and replied without ever seeing the grill.

The product, in the report: Masterbuilt propane smoker
Purchased Masterbuilt propane smoker last year and used the unit for the third time this year and luckily we were in backyard as the Masterbuilt smoker set to low and turned around to see a flame shooting out from underneath the unit which I turned off the gas. Inspected the unit which because of poor design which gas fed underneath the unit and close to burner burned away from connection, burned new nonmetallic flooring and melted the connection assembly. Reached out to Masterbuilt and have Case number [REDACTED] with description and photos showing damage to gazebo and unit. The response was spider nest in hose which when speaking to [REDACTED] that it’s not spiderwebs, It’s fibers in the gas line that melted and now Masterbuilt will not return emails or calls so now I will be reaching out to Consumer Affairs as I’m doing now and USA.Gov for investigation and recall because of poor design and defected pro product.

No one hurt Made Mar 20, 2016, sent to the company Mar 28, 2016, published by CPSC Apr 11, 2016
The product, in the report: gas smoker grill. Model M7P
I received a new Masterbuilt model M7P 7 in one Smoker as a gift for 35 yrs of service with my company at the end of Jan 2016. On the 3rd use I went out to check the cooking after about 45 min. I heard unusual noise. Upon checking found the fitting (brass) at the point it goes into the grill and burner was starting to come loose. It appeared that the compression around the rubber hose may not have been adequate. I immediately turned off the grill and touched the hose again and it separated from the fitting entirely, Had I not shut off the gas to the grill and had found the situation a fire would have ensued. This is a failure of the part and a serious fire and injury hazard. The serial # of the unit is AQ 021543
I must point out that I am in the insurance industry having investigated fires for approx. 30 years. I attained the Certified Fire Investigator designation from the NC Dept of Insurance/State Fire Marshall office in 1990, so I do recognize issues of this nature.
