The product, in the report: Lion Exterior Products, Inc.,Single Side Burner Model L5631. Issue regards the control knob for the unit. Viewed from a conventional viewpoint the control knob indicates “low” upside down when in the “OFF” position and never truly indicates another setting although comes close to “OFF” in the furthest counter clockwise position (the lowest burner setting). No Serial Number, UPC Code,Date of Manufacture, Manufacturer Date Code on the unit.
The product is a single side burner for gas or LP which is mounted in our outdoor kitchen. The unit is a Lion Exterior Products unit sold by Lion Exterior Products, Inc., 541 E. Main St., Ontario, CA 91716. The unit is provided with a single control knob which is the same as the control knobs for their barbecue grills. This knob is inappropriate for the side burner because when it is “off” it reads “low” and it never truly reads “off”.
The incident occurred when we first tried to use the unit. My wife who is 5’-3” tall opens the cover and sees that the unit is on “low” but feels no warmth so she raises up to her full height looks over the unit as she turns the control knob a quarter turn counterclockwise and it goes to “full on” and nearly burns her hair and her forehead. When contacted about the inappropriate control knob Lion External Products says that just the way it is. We have the knob that they supply the sideburner with and they just use the knob off the barbecue for this purpose even though it doesn’t indicate the control features correctly. They aren’t going to do anything about it.
In my opinion my wife was very lucky not to get severely burned and it is just a matter of time until somebody else does.
