As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Kuuma portable gas grill.

The product is a portable gas grill manufactured by Kuuma Products/Camco Manufacturing, Inc. This grill has a built in Pezio igniter which sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. When it does function, it ignites propane at the burner. When the lid is shut on the grill the flame is extinguished but the gas continues to build up inside the grill. Only by looking at the temperature gauge (built in to the lid) can you determine that the flame is out (the temperature goes down). After five minutes with the gas turned off, the flame may be relit. When opening the lid, you have access to an access hole to be used to relight the flame by sticking a lit match or utility lighter through the hole. Residual gas still inside the burner area ignites all at once with a loud noise (whump) and a fireball which singes the hair on your arm. This happens often while cooking.

Additionally, the wire which connects the Pezio igniter to the sparking head lies close enough to the flame that the insulation on the wire catches fire. The operator cannot see this take place. The insulation continues to burn until it reaches the ignitor button and then the plastic housing for the spark generator catches fire. Again, the operator cannot see this happening while cooking. After the gas is turned off and the cooking flame is extinguished there continues to be black smoke coming from the ignitor button area. By inspecting the inside of the unit, I found the Pezio ignitor had burned into an unrecognizable black blob of plastic. When I contacted the manufacturer to obtain a new ignitor, I explained what happened. They sent me a new ignitor which I installed according to the directions provided. After using the grill a few times, the second ignitor caught fire and melted.
