The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 13, 2012, sent to the company Aug 1, 2012, published by CPSC Aug 15, 2012

The product, in the report: It is a rail mounted propane gas grill designed for marine use and sold in a marine supply store, namely West Marine

I purchased a Kuuma Stow and Go Grill from West Marine on 9 July 2009. I was not aware until 12 July 2012 that there had been a recall of this product: Release #10-196. I have had an occasional problem with flame that seemed to back out from the lit grill towards the control knob. When that happened, I tried to make tighten the gas connections and that seem to help enough to allow time to cook a hamburger or piece of chicken. We only use the grill 4 or 5 times a year in the summers aboard our sailboat, so it has not been a major issue until yesterday, 11 July 2012. Upon lighting the grill, which was attached to the cockpit aft rail on our boat, I turned away briefly to pick the food I was about to cook, when the entire side of the grill where the propane tank is attached burst into flame. The fire quickly engulfed the entire side of the grill where the propane tank is attached and melted the plastic gas control knob, so I could not twist the control knob with my hand without being burned. I feared that the propane tank would “cook off” in an explosion, but was able to finally get the gas shut off by using a pair of cooking tongs. I believe I and my wife were in grave danger of having our boat catch fire, since the flames would have quickly heated the cloth Sunbrella bimini top. Last night I went on line to report this to the CPSC and discovered that the item had already been subject to a voluntary recall. I do not remember seeing anything about this recall from either Eastwind Industries, or West Marine. This was a life threatening incident and more aggressive action should be taken against this product.
