The product, in the report: gas smoker
I am writing to you about a serious accident that occurred using a vertical smoker. The smoker was a gift years ago and I have used it quite often. It is Landmann / Great Outdoors Smoky Mountain Model #A033141, Serial #531000468, 25,000 BTU/hr vertical smoker, 16”x 24”x 45”. The accident occurred on February 5, 2012, when the propane flame went out and I went to open the door to the smoker to check the beef brisket I was preparing. The chamber had filled with gas, and a spark from the wood chip box inside the smoker ignited the gas before I could open the door. The latched door to the smoker exploded into me, and caused some serious damage. I was rushed to the hospital ER where I was given 12 stitches, a CAT scan and a few weeks of rehabilitation. The hair was burned off of my eyelids, eyebrows, and singed the left side of my head. I am 6’ 3” tall and weigh 220 lbs, and I fully believe that the blast could have killed a child. Doing some research online, I have found several recall notices for vertical smokers due to safety issues with these types of regulators (gas shut off after flame goes out). Thank you for your attention to this serious issue. I want to prevent this from happening to someone else if possible, especially a child.
