The product, in the report: Gas Grill
Caller and his wife had cooked a variety of meats on Sunday, April 7th, 2013 then sat down to eat after turning the burners and the gas line off. They had been sitting down for approximately five minutes when they looked at the grill and saw thick black smoke coming from what seemed to be everywhere from under the lid. Caller opened the grill top, observed that the grill itself was on fire with metal dripping into the drip pan. He rushed downstairs to turn off valve from that location because all was already turned off a the grill location. He opened the doors below the grill to air out and this assisted with the extinguishing of the fire.
The grill is melted under the grilling service at the “flavor bars” (upside down V) where they meet the grill.
Consumer contacted the manufacturer Monday, April 8th, 2013, he spoke with Customer Service Representative [REDACTED] who offered to send replacement parts but caller advised her that he didn’t believe this would resolve the problem. [REDACTED] transferred the information to her supervisor, [REDACTED] who contacted the consumer after viewing pictures that he sent to [REDACTED] and advised him that she could tell by the pictures that he had not cleaned the grill appropriately and that the fire was basically his fault. His response to this was that the grill shouldn’t have melted and it wasn’t what was in the grill that was on fire but the grill itself. He cleans the grill each time before he cooks again and he and his wife grill fairly often. There were no injuries

The product, in the report: propane gas grill
Over this past weekend, I experienced a flash grease fire while grilling on my Weber Genesis Grill. I am wondering if there has been a recall on this particular grill. I am concerned as it appears there are several dangerous design flaws. The design of the drip tray allows for food scraps to fall into the drip tray and over time grease collects on the food scraps rather than running down the drip tray to the left side aluminum drip pan as intended. While grilling, grease dripped down onto the burners, catching fire, and transferring that fire to the drip tray. In an instant the tray was on fire, and it was so intense I had to back away from the grill before I could remove the food on the grill. The food on the grill fed the flames, which at this point was so hot inside the lower cabinet that it melted the plastic grommets around the door handles. Toxic plastic fumes billowed from the grill. This fire was right next to the propane tank, which you will see in the attached photos got hot enough to blacken the tank. It was by the grace of God that the tank did not explode. I am not an engineer, however I have been grilling for many years. Several things stand out to me. First, the grease tray appears to be too close to the burners. The grease tray itself should pitch to the center of the tray, not the side. This would create a shorter distance for grease to travel to reach the aluminum grease pan. The doors should not have plastic components within close proximity to the heat source. Being an enclosed space below the grill allows for heat build-up in a flash fire, creating a risk of exploding the propane tank. This is my four gas grill, and first grease fire. I have had one other Weber grill, an [REDACTED] grill, and others. I purposefully selected this grill after reading reviews and receiving personal recommendations of Weber Genesis users. It was purchased for me as a Christmas gift this year. I recognize now that the grease tray should be cleaned frequently, however, I never regularly cleaned the grease tray on past grills, and I suspect that most people are like me and do not clean the grease tray frequently. My concern is that someone will be seriously injured or could die from a propane explosion if they experience what I experienced this weekend
