The product, in the report: Char Griller propane grill. Model number 5030. Item was stated to be approximately 1 month old and was purchased new by the home owner. Black with 2 burning areas or covers. Dimensions - 53.9 x 26.2 x 46.9 inches

We recently had a fire that I believe may have been caused by an out of place burner deflector on this grill. The grill was estimated to be 1 month old prior to the fire and had only been used 1-3 times prior to this fire. During my investigation, I did not find any other ignition sources that may have contributed to the fire.

We were called to a grill on fire on a deck that was connected to a single-family home. My engine company was the first to arrive. I found fire blowing from the relief valve of the propane tank connected to this grill. The fire from the relief valve was impinging on the the deck railing and communication lines running from the backyard power pole to the house. We extinguished the fire using a dry chemical fire extinguisher and cooled the railing and communication lines using a garden hose from the house.

The homeowner stated the grill was approximately 1 month old and that they had used it 1-3 times, with no issues, prior to this fire. The person who started the grill stated it was heating up for only a couple of minutes when he returned outside and saw the fire near the propane tank.

During my investigation, I found no other nearby ignition sources. There was a plastic handle grill scraper that was melted and laying on the floor of the deck, to the left of the propane tank. The scraper was directly below the hooks on the grill shelf that are intended to be used to hang accessories. The only other items to be damaged during this fire were the deck railing, communication lines, and the scorch marks on the left side of the grill and underside of the shelf. This area of the grill is where the propane tank was installed.

I examined the grill and found it to be relatively clean with a minimal amount of burn food debris and grease on the inside bottom of the grill. I found the left burner heat deflector to be out of place. The deflector was still above the burner but was positioned slightly right of the burner and was rotated slightly in a clockwise position. This position would have deflected some of the heat from the burner towards the left side of the grill and towards a manufactured hole on the left side of the grill that was only a few inches away from the propane tank valve and the pressure relief valve on the tank.

When I asked the person who started the grill about the position of the burner deflector, he was unsure what position the deflector was in prior to starting the grill. I asked the fire personnel who assisted in the extinguishment and overhaul of the scene if they moved the deflector or if they thought their extinguishment efforts may have moved the deflector. They believed their efforts had very low impact, if any, on the integrity of the grill or the items within it, and do not think the deflector was moved as a result.

While I cannot state with absolute certainty that the position of the burner heat deflector caused this fire, I did not find any other ignition sources that could have caused this fire. I do believe it is possible that the heat deflector position along with the location of the manufactured hole in the grill side, and the location of the propane tank (fuel source), could have combined to cause this fire. I believe more testing of this product is necessary to ensure this issue does not happen again.

The product, in the report: Flat Grill

After a few months of use the grill started on fire behind the heatshield and engulfed the igniter and wires in flames. This fire was extremely close to the propane tank thus a major explosion risk. I reached out to the company and they blamed spiders and sent me new wires. After finally working up the courage to try it the grill again, the same thing happened. This time I was able to stop it early because I was watching closely. The company no longer responds to me. I think it has a major design error that could lead to death. I have the grill and all the parts if needed.

The product, in the report: Char-Griller Dual Gas/Charcoal Grill A & J Manufacturing Model #5072

I purchased a CharGriller Dual Gas/Charcoal Grill on 8/19/17 from a local Wal-Mart Store. On October 14, 2017, my husband and I were getting ready to grill hamburgers and turned the grill on low; a few moments later we noticed a funny smell coming from our grill. He looked at the grill and before the grill even had the burgers on it, it had gotten hot enough to melt the knobs off of the grill, melt the paint off of the grill and melt the hood on the gas side of the grill. We immediately cut the grill off.

The product, in the report: Professional Chargriller BBQ model2121 is the current version.

I bought a Professional Chargriller made in China. The first time I used it we detected a gas leak. It turned out that the Regulator was defective. In a haste to cook the food, I went down and bought a new one and put it on and it worked fine for a couple years. The first time it overheated due to chicken grease, it melted the internal lines inbetween the 3 burners. I did not turn the main tank off but, turned off the three burner knobs in the front. My neighbor came to me the next day saying he smelled gas and sure enough the thing was leaking again. If this had been put in a garage, it would have been catostrophic. Luckily enough it was sitting outside. I am going to destroy the BBQ so no one trys to use it. Mine was three years old, the current model of it is a 2121. I went to Lowes Department store 2 months after I purchased it and reported it, I went back months later and they were still being sold.

The product, in the report: OUTDOOR PROPANE GRILL

I have recently bought a Chargriller outdoor BBQ grill and have noticed the unpainted interior shell is coated to prevent corrosion. I reviewed the manual and online data to verify what the coating is. It is stated by Chargriller that the coating is “vegetable based.” That is the only detail available. I contacted Chargriller by email and inquired about the coating. They simply restated it was “vegetable based.”

The reason I contacted Chargriller, and now sp.gov, is that I feel this coating MAY NOT be vegetable based and may possibly be a toxic corrosion inhibiter instead. 2 reasons lead me to believe this:

    1. While serving in the Navy, I worked on jet aircraft where we used toxic petroleum-based anti-corrosion coatings on almost all engine parts, fittings, and compartments. MSDS sheets I reviewed at the time stated the coatings were indeed quite toxic if ingested. The coating on the Chargriller has the exact same appearance, consistancy, and odor as the anti-corrosin coating I worked with in the Navy.

    2. While working on my motorcycle, I recently used a rust-preventative spray made by [REDACTED]. This spray, which is also nasty if inhaled, ingested, or even has prolonged skin exposure, also has the same color, consistancy, and odor as the previously mentioned toxic anti-corrosion coatings as I used in the navy.

You cannot mistake the odor that these anti-corrosion coating give off. It’s an acrid, skunk-like strong odor that gives you a headache very quickly. I have recontacted Chargriller for MSDS information on the coating they are using and I have not been contacted back. If Chargriller is, indeed, using a toxic coating, they are seriously endangering the health of consumers who use their grills. The basic research I have done on my own has shown that the compounds contained in anti-corrosion coatings can cause neurological damage, lung damage, and cancer in minute quantities. I would like to request that Chargriller be made to divulge the detailed nature of their grill coating and disclose any MSDS if available.

Thank you for your time [REDACTED]
